"Now, why would your footprints turn up at the crime scene? You know the drill: full confession means leniency, but resistance means the works! Don't make me use my... special methods, alright? Hohoho... So, what do you think? Did my professional detective vibe blow you away, {name}?"

Go! Sparkle! Shine! Exclusive "Beep beep – listen up! Detective Jane is on the scene, and with my keen eye, I'll make sure everything stays fair and square! Hmm... It seems you don't have the talent to be a detective. If you can't make such a simple deduction correctly, {name}, I think you need some special training.

  • Receiving Gift - Preferred

You managed to discover the hobby I tried so hard to conceal... F-Fine then! You're the greatest detective in One Han City today. Only for today!

  • Bond Level Up Voice 5

My grandma established a detective agency called Detective X in her younger days. It had to close down for various reasons, but I know she would love to see it become One Han City's top detective agency once again. Now, it's up to me to fulfill my grandma's wish. As my assistant, you'll also need to work hard, {name}.

  • Bond Level Up Voice 1

Jane Christie is a legendary female detective who left behind countless tales of detective prowess in One Han City. She's the pinnacle that every detective aspires to reach! Hehe, my grandma actually named me after her, {name}. Do you know what this means? It means I'm destined to become the second Jane Christie!

  • Bond Level Up Voice 2

The ABC theft case? Oh... you're talking about the famous painting theft I solved two years ago. I didn't expect someone would pay attention to the details of the case itself. Back then, the media was only excited that a good-looking girl cracked it. No one gave any close thought to how I actually solved the case. {name}, you really do have what it takes to be my assistant.

  • Bond Level Up Voice 3

I... think I failed my exams again... But I don't think it's my fault. The theme of the essay is "blue curtain." It's suspicious, right? If the color doesn't matter, why emphasize that it's blue? It must be some kind of secret signal or code, or maybe it alludes to the criminal's mental state at the time... I can't believe one of the comments said my essay wasn't positive enough. Hmph!

  • Bond Level Up Voice 4

The things that appear most trivial often tend to be the ones that trigger major cases. Just imagine – this rainstorm right here? It might just be the consequence of a seagull's distant wing flap. That's why, as detectives, we learn that every case, no matter how small it seems, demands our utmost dedication.

  • 隐藏语音 - 新年

"I'm worried you'll get swamped with wish messages at midnight, so I'm wishing you a Happy New Year in advance." "Please carry this blessing with you every day." Hmm... I guess it's inevitable that people send out mass messages on holidays. Oh, this one is even worse – they forgot to change the recipient's name... You're not planning on sending me a lazy copy-paste like that, are you? No way! But hey, it's New Year's, so a simple wish is definitely in order. Happy New Year, {name}!

  • 隐藏语音 - 情人节

Today, I'm going to take this opportunity to teach you another exclusive detective skill – how to spot fake couples. Hehe, on this day, some people always pretend to be couples just to fit in. However, they are way too naive if they think they can fool me. Look at those two in yellow over there. The one on the left is wearing a hat, and they're sitting by the pool... The way they avoid looking at each other gave them away instantly. Hohoho... Huh? U-Us? Do we even need to pretend...?

  • Lobby Interactive Voice 1

A scary movie? You've made a mistake if you want to see me scared. Detectives are the most determined materialists in the world. I only believe in my own deductions!

  • Lobby Interactive Voice 2

In science shows, they often say, "These tropical plants grow in tropical rainforests where there are very few people." But if we think about it carefully, shouldn't they say, "People rarely go to places where these tropical plants grow," instead? After all, you wouldn't want to go to a dangerous jungle filled with giant flowers that eat humans, right?! You definitely wouldn't go, would you?

  • Lobby Interactive Voice 3

The official price of the same shawl that Jane Christie wore is actually 35,000 Coppers?! Ahahaha... Instead of just robbing me, they are willing to give me a piece of clothing. I'm so moved that my eyes are starting to well up with tears. *sobs*... How many jobs will I have to take to earn this much... damn it!

  • Lobby Interactive Voice 4

Have you also noticed? My informant, Ninomiya, is definitely born to be an investigator. With her flawless disguise, she can sneak in anywhere and gather intel effortlessly... This is such a powerful and unique ability. She's the very last tile I need to declare Riichi!

  • Lobby Interactive Voice 5

The order of the strokes in this autograph... and the pressure on that last stroke... Hmm, this looks suspicious...! Ah! Did you forge Joseph's autograph on this photo?! Don't play dumb with me. I'm talking about Joseph, the host of that famous adventure show. Hmph! I should've thought of this sooner. Given how close you two are, there's a 73% chance something like this would happen. Fortunately, the one I got before was genuinely signed by him.

  • Lobby Interactive Voice 6

Summer really is the most wonderful season of the year. My mom and dad are so busy at work that they only have time together during the summer vacation. That's when our whole family goes on a tropical island getaway, and my dad teaches me all sorts of life skills. That's also how I learned to play mahjong... Hehe, you think my dad is amazing, right? Actually, I have a nagging suspicion that he's a secret agent, but my grandma always says that I'm thinking too much. Hmph, I'll find proof one day!

  • Lobby Interactive Voice 7

This is suspicious. Too suspicious. Why hasn't anyone ever stopped to question whether it actually makes sense? I'm talking about the claim that the Mahjong Soul Shrine can grant any wish – especially considering everyone in One Han City believes it without a doubt. Hmm... I have a bold but reasonable hypothesis. If the Mahjong Soul Shrine is really the mastermind behind all this, then the citizens of One Han City are probably accessories. {name}, you're with me on this, right?

  • Lobby Interactive Voice 8

I ran into you right after arriving at the crime scene. This isn't something we can just chalk up to coincidence. You're coming with me to the detective club to explain why you happened to be at the scene where the lilies of the gardening club were stolen... And don't even think about lying. I've been watching you closely – every word, every move – and I can instantly tell what's true and what's not. Any lie you try won't last three seconds.

Campus Disappearance

Unlock at Bond Lv1

CASE FILE: C-042 INCIDENT: Campus Disappearance INVESTIGATOR: Jane STATUS: Closed When the client arrived, she was out of breath, and her eyes were red under her furrowed brow... After calming herself down, she explained the case – her best friend had vanished. Not only that, the missing person had not eaten in a perilously long time... This was, without a doubt, a major criminal case. With life and death hanging in the balance, there was no time to lose. An investigation of the missing person's last known location revealed several oddities in this case – my magnifying glass revealed scratches on the floor, and the items on the table were in slight disarray. The evidence gathered at the scene suggested that this was more likely a case of kidnapping than a disappearance. But strangely enough, not a single person questioned at the scene reported witnessing any suspicious behavior. So, we had an elusive, unknown kidnapper and a victim who vanished in broad daylight – it was like a mystery straight out of a detective novel. It would be a tough case to crack for your average detective. But I, Jane, readily took up the challenge! Based on the trace evidence and what I knew about the victim, I began to reconstruct a spatial model of the crime scene in my mind. At the time of the incident, the wind was blowing into the building through open windows on the southeast side. From the direction and depth of the scratch marks, the victim was likely pushed off the table. And the direction they were dragged in? The building's labyrinthine ground floor, an area notoriously dominated by outlaws. But what was the motive? Why abduct a defenseless civilian? What was the kidnapper planning? I look over the information the client provided on the victim. After an extended period without food, the victim's internal life-sustaining alert system emits a high-frequency sonic pulse every ten minutes. That was the key. Such a high-pitched, high-frequency noise likely triggered the perpetrator's aggressive impulses. So... it was time for some criminal profiling. The suspect stuck to the shadows, had keen ears, and was highly territorial. Potentially moody as well as short-fused, their physical strength far exceeded the victim's. Additionally, the suspect must have been on the smaller side. How else could they have pulled off the crime without any witnesses? The key to cracking the case was determining the route the victim was taken. If I could retrace the suspect's path, I knew I could solve the case and rescue the victim. And to this question, there was only one answer: that vent in the corner! It was the only way the suspect could have absconded with the victim! Except that it was impossible to fit more than an arm in... But even a problem like this can be solved – my trusty sidekick, Peanut, was flexible enough to squeeze right in. I gave the order, and Peanut's nimble figure quickly disappeared into the ventilation shaft. All there was to do now was wait. If what the client said was correct... the next alert in the ten-minute cycle would soon sound. 30 seconds... 15 seconds... 5 seconds, 3, 2, 1... "Beep-beep-beep beep! Beep-beep-beep beep!" The sound drew closer and grew louder until Peanut's little head reappeared in the shaft entrance, holding in its mouth the "victim" itself. Its cry for help was pulsating on cue, only now, the victim was safe. Her missing best friend now safe and sound, the client hurriedly took it into her hands and pressed the Feed button, instantly rescuing the victim from the brink of death. It gave a pleasant electronic chirp, and with that, the crisis was averted. "Thank goodness...! Thank you, thank you so much, Jane! You really are a brilliant detective!" "Hohoho... it was nothing! It must have been snatched up by a mouse. Just be a little more careful next time, okay?" "I will! I'll be sure to put my Tamagotchi back in its box next time...!" My classmate's case is now closed, and my reward is a week's worth of ice cream. Another flawless day is hereby recorded in Jane's Detective Log.

Trailing the Truth

Unlock at Bond Lv2

"...Above are some of the details pertaining to the ABC theft case. Going forward, we will continue to step up our efforts to uphold law and order in One Han City." In the studio of the hit program "Trailing the Truth," a report on the ABC theft case is currently underway. The items that were stolen and the location of the incident are closely linked in this case, and the unusual techniques employed have generated plenty of buzz around the theft. "Alright! Now that we've heard the broad strokes from the police, let's turn our attention to this brilliant young female detective!" (Hohoho! Finally, it's my time to shine!) A small girl takes the place of the burly police officer now stepping down from the stage. The host signals to the camera operator to focus in on Jane. This live interview program broadcasts on various platforms and enjoys considerable popularity in One Han City. "Jane, why don't you introduce yourself to our audience?" It's Jane's first time appearing on the show, but she doesn't seem the least bit nervous – on the contrary, she looks eager to get started. Her expression beaming with confidence, she turns to face the camera. "It would be my pleasure. My name is Jane, and I'm the detective who helped to solve the ABC theft case! I'll be adding a few details to what you just heard from the police officer. First is an analysis of the perpetrator's mindset – the supposed connection between the location and the stolen items was in fact a smokescreen deployed by the thief in order to..." "Ahaha... This young detective sure has her own unique insights! But we can get to all of that later. Why don't you tell us a little about your hobbies? Any favorite shows or foods you'd recommend?" Jane has barely begun her analysis of the case when the host interrupts her to steer the conversation in a completely different direction. "...Huh? You want to talk about that first? Well... I'm always reading a detective novel, and I enjoy a cup of black tea with sugar..." "Well! That figures! Reading all those detective novels must have really inspired you. And black tea with sugar – what a unique choice! Is that the secret to sparking your detective's intuition?" "Reading detective novels gave me some inspiration, sure, but I think it mostly just piqued my interest in detectives? As for the tea... it's just my personal preference. Sugar actually does very little to help with the deductive process..." Feeling a bit awkward, Jane scratches her cheek. Attention is a good thing, isn't it? But isn't the focus of this attention a little misplaced...? That said, the audience appears utterly enraptured with the conversation happening up on stage. They're staring so intently that Jane's embarrassed to admit the real reason that she drinks black tea with sugar – it's also the drink of choice of her idol, Jane Christie. Jane Christie is the protagonist of The Adventures of Jane Christie, the detective novel series written by her grandmother. "You're too modest! So, Jane, what does a typical day in your life look like?" "Well... I get up at 6:30 in the morning, then I..." "Is that so! And how would you describe your fashion style?" "Apart from detective work, what do you do to relax?" "Now that you've become a celebrity, do you have any plans to break into the entertainment industry?" ... The host rattles off question after question, but Jane's enthusiasm is lackluster compared to when she was discussing the case. No matter what ordinary, daily student activity she describes, the host seems to invariably interpret it as "extraordinary detective work." For a moment, Jane seems to have completely forgotten the reason she came on the show. There are still so many trains of thought she wants to highlight and details she wants to recount... This is the perfect opportunity to shine a light on the criminal's methodology and to warn people to remain vigilant, yet somehow, it's turned into a reality show interview. This outcome is the exact opposite of what Jane had been expecting. ...What would Jane Christie do in this situation? Maybe it wouldn't bother her at all, and she'd enthusiastically share her daily routine and fun facts with the audience... Or maybe she'd refuse to be on a show like this in the first place? After all, programs like these have the potential to inspire copycat crimes and further degrade the public safety of the city... Her mind already wandering off, Jane answers the host's questions mechanically until the program soon comes to a finish. "Well then, thank you all for tuning in, and see you again on next week's 'Trailing the Truth'! Until then!"

The Great Detective's Small Problem

Unlock at Bond Lv3

"...So, the trick the killer used to fabricate an alibi is in fact hidden in this cup of black tea with sugar!" The afternoon sunlight streams in through the gaps in the blinds, casting strips of light over the dark room. Jane stands alone before a full-length mirror with an empty teacup in one hand as she does her best impression of the classic thinking pose of her ideal detective – Jane Christie. "No, that's not right. Maybe my hand's too high, and my gaze isn't profound enough...?" But no matter how she adjusts her breathing or imitates the expressions described in the books, all she sees in the mirror is a high school girl cosplaying as a detective. Recalling her experience on "Trailing the Truth" last time, Jane involuntarily whispers a sigh. Everyone calls her the "Genius Girl Detective," but they're all so fixated on the "girl" part that the deductive skills she prides herself on have gone completely overlooked. This won't do... She feels no closer to achieving her goal of becoming a famous detective – if anything, it now seems to be drifting further away. "I have to find a way to draw people's attention away from my appearance... Maybe I could wear a mask and become a masked detective or something?" "No, no, no... That would only give the gossip columnists more to write about. It would just look like a publicity stunt..." Jane puts down the teacup and sinks deep into thought. If her skills are already sufficient, then the problem must lie with her presentation. That must be it! If the goal is to win the trust of clients as well as the police, then a detective can't overlook her way of presenting herself to the world! Jane draws a deep breath, and her gaze sharpens. Since her specialty is criminal profiling, why not try a different kind of profiling with herself as the subject this time? That's it! Jane takes a couple of steps back and, as if taking in the scene of a crime, studies her reflection in the mirror with a look so cold it could cut. A room suffused with an air of mystery – no problems there. A well-honed, professional-looking detective pose – nearly perfect. Jane Christie's signature detective's trench coat and tools – all accounted for. A composition as perfectly put together as the cover of a detective novel... Hmm? Jane squints slightly. Is this composition... lacking something? Just where is this subtle, lingering sense of discord coming from? The image in the mirror always seems slightly off-balance, as if one side of the scale is missing a "weight" to steady the whole. ...What should she do? "...What should I do?" Jane murmurs her thoughts aloud in the quiet room. "Squeak..." As if sensing its owner's feelings, the ferret lets out a dejected whimper. "Oh, Peanut! Do you have any ideas...? I wish you could tell me what to do..." "Wait a minute..." Jane's eyes suddenly light up, like a flash of lightning splitting through a dense fog. "Of course! Why didn't I think of it before?!" Jane leaps to her feet so excitedly that she nearly steps on Peanut's tail. She finally understands where that "discord" is coming from – the reason the image in the mirror appears so sparse is that it only reflects the detective herself! Isn't Jane Christie herself usually accompanied by her trusty, shrewd assistant who always has a wisecrack at the ready?! "What's missing isn't a tool or a pose... It's a person!" Jane's cheeks flush red as she excitedly paces back and forth across the room. Hohoho... Of course! So, this is the final piece of the puzzle to becoming a true detective! What she needs is a "Genius Detective's Assistant" to be her helper, her right hand, and her comrade-in-arms! Just like her idol, Jane Christie, who is never without her assistant. After all... "A truly brilliant detective should have a brilliant assistant!" Jane resumes her position before the mirror, this time wearing a confident smile. Now her first order of business is to seek out the one destined for the role!

So, at best, they can give you a general lay of the land. The real detective work begins now...

#10040 Spot 0

{var:player_nickname}, have you ever tried your hand at criminal profiling?

#10041 Spot 0
At what? → Spot 10043
I may have. → Spot 10043
#10043 Spot 0
Jane

Simply put, it's an investigative technique that analyzes criminal behavior and methods to identify suspects.

#10044 Spot 0
Jane

The basic premise is that a person's physiology, behavior, and personality are connected and can be inferred from one another.

#10045 Spot 0
Jane

For instance... people's eyes dart around when they're lying, walking unsteadily is a sign of staying up too late, and being in Tenpai always gives people a tense look.

#10046 Spot 0
Jane

Of course, these are just possible patterns – not evidence to draw conclusions from. Still, it's a useful technique for honing your detective skills.

#10049 Spot 0

Hohoho! Well, what are we waiting for? Let's give it a try right now!

#10050 Spot 0
You can even use this technique on people who haven't committed a crime? → Spot 10051
#10051 Spot 0
Jane

Of course! Just because it's used in criminal investigations doesn't mean it can't be useful for everyday deduction.

#10052 Spot 0
Jane

For example, why don't you try guessing what the next few people to walk by this main road do for a living?

#10053 Spot 0
player

Hmm...

#10054 Spot 0

The first person to walk by is a young man in a suit. He's wearing wireless earbuds and gold-rimmed glasses. He's speaking rapidly into his phone with a serious look on his face.

#10058 Spot 0

But we need more information, right? Good. Great investigators are always thorough!

#10059 Spot 0

We'd be taking a risk, but why don't we listen in on his conversation as he walks by?

#10062 Spot 0

To be precise, the kind forced to stream outdoors for whatever reason. Looks like a tough gig...

#10063 Spot 0

The second person to walk by is a brawny, muscle-bound man with a bald head. He's wearing sunglasses and a tank top, and his arms are covered in small scars... I wouldn't want to mess with him.

#10064 Spot 0
You don't think he's in a gang, do you? → Spot 10066
The answer can't be that simple... → Spot 10066
#10066 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho... You know, {var:player_nickname}, when a detective can't nail down the truth, they check the scene for any "inconsistencies." That's where you tend to find the key to solving the crime.

#10067 Spot 0
Jane

Take this guy for example – he might look kind of scary, but first ask yourself... What's the probability that a gangster is just wandering around a busy street in broad daylight?

#10068 Spot 0
player

When you put it that way, it does seem unlikely...

#10069 Spot 0
Jane

Take a closer look at him... He has all those scars on his arms, but they look too shallow to be knife wounds. Cat scratches are more likely.

#10070 Spot 0
Jane

Look again at his clothes. See all that animal hair? Now what do you think he does for a living, {var:player_nickname}?

#10071 Spot 0
player

I see! So, he could be a pet groomer!

#10072 Spot 0
Jane

Hehe, exactly. Now let's see about the next one...

#10073 Spot 0

Jane and I continue to deduce the occupations of passersby to give me more profiling practice.

#10074 Spot 0
#10075 Spot 0
Jane

What do you think? It's a bit like brainstorming, isn't it?

#10076 Spot 0
player

Yeah... I've never studied people on the street in such detail before.

#10077 Spot 0
Jane

Isn't it fun? But since this isn't official detective work, this is as much as we can do. Any more staring and it gets a bit rude.

#10078 Spot 0
player

Fair enough, but... I can't shake the feeling that someone's been watching us from behind...

#10079 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho! You're not used to being in the spotlight, are you, {var:player_nickname}? Don't be surprised – a detective duo like us is bound to attract some attention.

#10080 Spot 0
Jane

Alright, keep your voice down and look over there at our two o'clock, I think I see someone... This target we can observe a little more closely.

#10081 Spot 0

Whispering to me and gesturing with her eyes, Jane directs my gaze to a young man standing at the entrance to a store holding a bouquet of flowers.

#10082 Spot 0

He's wearing a casual suit, but he keeps fiddling with the collar. He looks a bit uncomfortable.

#10083 Spot 0
player

He must be waiting for his date...

#10084 Spot 0
Jane

Precisely. However... I strongly suspect that, despite his best efforts, this date will end in failure.

#10085 Spot 0
And what gives you that idea? → Spot 10086
#10086 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho, you look doubtful. Why don't we bet on it? I'll stand by my prediction.

#10087 Spot 0
Jane

I'll explain my reasoning to you first.

#10088 Spot 0
Jane

See the flowers he's holding? Those are yellow carnations.

#10089 Spot 0
player

Yellow? Hmm... That's kind of an odd choice for a date.

#10090 Spot 0
Jane

Exactly! They can imply disappointment, or at best give off a real "let's just be friends" vibe. Bringing those on a date – or giving them to someone you have a crush on – is definitely not the smartest move.

#10091 Spot 0
Jane

But that won't be the killing blow. Notice how he can't stop scratching at his collar and the backs of his hands?

#10092 Spot 0
player

I saw that. Is it because he's so nervous he's sweating?

#10093 Spot 0
Jane

Not at all. Usually when people are nervous, they just fidget with their hands and clothes. His skin is clearly reacting to a fabric allergy.

#10094 Spot 0
Jane

If that was his suit, this wouldn't be a surprise to him. The only explanation is that he rented it at the last minute, or maybe even borrowed it from a friend.

#10095 Spot 0
Jane

Look at how it sits on his shoulders – that cut is all wrong for his frame. Such inconsistencies are enough to prove my theory.

#10096 Spot 0
Jane

He brought the wrong flowers for a date and got his outfit together at the last minute... If he's that careless and disorganized, what chance does he have?

#10097 Spot 0
You make some strong points... → Spot 10099
Well, logic isn't everything in love, is it? → Spot 10099
#10099 Spot 0
Jane

Heh. We'll just have to wait and see who's right. Oh, look, here comes our leading lady now.

#10100 Spot 0

Following Jane's eyes, I spot a girl in a white dress rushing over and then stopping before the young man.

#10101 Spot 0

As she looks up at him, her eyes land on the bouquet of yellow carnations. Her expression freezes.

#10102 Spot 0

Seemingly sensing the awkwardness in the air, the boy opens his mouth to explain. But then...

#10103 Spot 0
Man

Ah-CHOO!!

#10104 Spot 0

His earthshaking sneeze thunders through the street. The boy rubs at his reddened nose, looking utterly miserable.

#10105 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho... And there you have it! Next comes the typical ending: The woman walks away in disgust, leaving the man heartbroken.

#10106 Spot 0

Despite Jane's smugly-made prediction, there's no obvious trace of disgust in the girl's expression. In fact...

#10107 Spot 0
Jane

Huh? What's going on? Don't tell me she's actually amused by such a ridiculous scene?

#10108 Spot 0
She doesn't seem offended, that's for sure... → Spot 10110
Is she holding back laughter...? → Spot 10110
#10110 Spot 0

Though she seems momentarily frozen in surprise, the girl doesn't frown or wince. If anything, her expression softens.

#10111 Spot 0

Her shoulders relax, and the corners of her mouth start to twitch ever so slightly, like she's trying her best to contain something.

#10112 Spot 0
Jane, your deduction might be a bust. → Spot 10113
#10113 Spot 0
Jane

Huh? A b-bust? That's impossible...! All the evidence pointed to – hang on, her microexpression...

#10114 Spot 0

Just as Jane is about to explain further, the girl bursts out laughing in the distance.

#10115 Spot 0

Rather than hold the boy's tactlessness against him, she pulls a tissue from her bag and hands it to him, teasing him lightheartedly. Blushing, the boy scratches his head and, to our surprise, the two of them head off toward the shopping district with their hands clasped.

#10116 Spot 0
Jane

...

#10117 Spot 0
Jane

What?!

#10118 Spot 0
Jane

W-wait a minute! This doesn't make any sense! It completely defies the logic of criminal profiling! He clearly did everything wrong!

#10119 Spot 0
player

Perhaps it was his clumsy sincerity itself that won her over.

#10120 Spot 0
Jane

No way... I can't believe this... My profiles are never wrong...

#10123 Spot 0

#10124 Spot 0

Th-that's right...! I'm really sorry, but I happened to overhear your conversation before, and... I was sure such a logical mind could only belong to that famous detective!

#10125 Spot 0

Hohoho, an accurate deduction! Standing before you is none other than Detective Jane – solver of countless confounding cases! Is there something I can do to assist, fine citizen?

#10126 Spot 0
Passerby

That's incredible! You see, I was walking around nearby when I realized my wallet was missing... Something really important to me was in there... Could you help me look for it?

#10127 Spot 0
Jane

No trouble at all! Recovering missing items may be basic detective work, but I'll still give it my full attention!

#10128 Spot 0
Jane

Now, walk me through everything you were doing before and after you realized your wallet was missing.

#10129 Spot 0
Passerby

Well... I came out of the subway station roughly half an hour ago, and then... I wandered around nearby...

#10130 Spot 0
Jane

"Roughly"? "Wandered"? "Nearby"?

#10131 Spot 0
Jane

That won't do, that's far too vague.

#10132 Spot 0
Jane

Which shops specifically did you enter after leaving the subway station? Which intersections did you stop at? When was the last time you confirmed you were still in possession of your wallet?

#10133 Spot 0
Passerby

I... I can't really remember. I think I went into that stationery shop over there, and then I... I went into the alley next to it...

#10134 Spot 0
Jane

The alley? Why would you go there? What business would you have in a place like that? Are you attempting to conceal something from me...?

#10135 Spot 0
Passerby

No... I'm not! I really just...

#10136 Spot 0

...! Oh... Okay... Thank you... I understand...

#10143 Spot 0

Th-the truth is... Something I ate at breakfast didn't agree with me and I couldn't find a restroom anywhere... That's why I went into that shop – to use their bathroom...

#10144 Spot 0
Passerby

But then it turned out to be a really niche fan comic store... That's why I couldn't bring myself to say it... It would have been too embarrassing...

#10145 Spot 0
Jane

...I see, so that's why you withheld key testimony earlier.

#10146 Spot 0
Jane

Got it. So, based on your account... we can draw three conclusions.

#10147 Spot 0
Jane

One: Your wallet went missing while you were in that store.

#10148 Spot 0
Passerby

That's right...!

#10149 Spot 0
Jane

Two: Given the urgency of your visit, you went straight to the restroom without stopping anywhere else in the store.

#10150 Spot 0
Passerby

Um... Wait... That's...

#10151 Spot 0
Jane

Three: Once you relieved yourself, you were so flustered that all you could think about was getting out of dodge – greatly increasing the odds that you'd leave something behind.

#10152 Spot 0
Passerby

Y-you're absolutely correct! But... please don't repeat any of that... It's so embarrassing I could die!

#10153 Spot 0
Jane

In conclusion, that shop is the first place we should look! Let's go, {var:player_nickname}! It's time to confirm the facts!

#10154 Spot 0

After that, we found the lost wallet on a shelf in the store's restroom as expected.

#10155 Spot 0
Passerby

Thank you so much, Detective Jane! And your kind assistant, too! I never would have gotten it back without your help!

#10156 Spot 0

After thanking us profusely, the passerby quickly runs off. Jane and I then resume our stroll down the streets.

#10157 Spot 0

Ahem... We made a pretty good team there, {var:player_nickname}.

#10158 Spot 0

Or you could adjust your questioning technique...

#10160 Spot 0

...Fine, you've made your point.

#10161 Spot 0

{var:player_nickname}, your detective skills may still need some work, but when it comes to reading people and understanding feelings, you're a natural!

#10162 Spot 0

#10163 Spot 0

Perhaps all this time my mind and judgment have been so rational that I've overlooked the clues that only intuition can unearth... I think you could be key to balancing that out for me.

#10164 Spot 0

#10170 Spot 0

What could be so disastrous about an interview...?

#10171 Spot 0

Convinced that the next target had to be an item associated with the letter D, the police department deployed officers all over the city to intercept and apprehend the thief... It was an incredible show of force.

#10005 Spot 0
Jane

However! That sort of thinking only played right into the perpetrator's hands.

#10006 Spot 0
Jane

You might think that, as D follows C, the thief's next target would have something to do with the letter D. And from there, they would go on to E, then F, and all the way through the alphabet, right?

#10007 Spot 0
Jane

But it was never about the letters – that was just a smokescreen to distract the police from the criminal's true motive: the item they actually wanted to steal.

#10008 Spot 0
Jane

By analyzing the underlying connections between the items, I was able to deduce the thief's true intentions...

#10009 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho... Their real goal had nothing to do with letters! And thanks to my gift of predicting suspects' next moves, we successfully apprehended the thief!

#10010 Spot 0
player

I see...

#10011 Spot 0
Jane

And that's why determining the motive for a crime is so important in detective work!

#10012 Spot 0
Jane

So, our job today is to gather clues pertaining to the motive of the crime... in a location on the outskirts of One Han City.

#10013 Spot 0
player

You know, I'm curious...

#10014 Spot 0
Jane

Huh? About what?

#10015 Spot 0
You said we're going to gather clues... → Spot 10017
But how did you infer the target location? → Spot 10017
#10017 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho... Good, very good! Maintaining a healthy skepticism is key to being a great assistant! You're starting to get the hang of this!

#10018 Spot 0
Jane

As for how I inferred the location... Obviously, I...

#10019 Spot 0
player

You...?

#10020 Spot 0
Jane

I used my contacts in the city's police department to trace the suspect's IP address and lock onto the location where the message was sent!

#10021 Spot 0
Jane

Our perp may be long gone by now, but they're bound to have left clues anywhere they lingered for long enough. So, the first place to check is their last known location.

#10022 Spot 0
... → Spot 10024
Oh... that's it? → Spot 10024
#10024 Spot 0
Jane

Don't look so crestfallen, my dear assistant! Detective work isn't always as exciting as in comics and novels.

#10025 Spot 0
Jane

In this era of advanced technology, you have to leverage all your resources if you want to fast-track to the truth.

#10026 Spot 0
Jane

After all, the important thing is to rely on your own abilities to protect justice. Focusing too much on the methodology is counterproductive.

#10027 Spot 0
I guess that makes sense... → Spot 10029
Got it! I'll assist however I can! → Spot 10030
#10029 Spot 0
Jane

That's the spirit! Now, give it your all!

#10030 Spot 0
Jane

Nice, I like your enthusiasm!

#10031 Spot 0
Jane

Okay. Whatever awaits us there, we have to search for any clues "D" left behind and use them to infer the motive.

#10032 Spot 0
Jane

Oh, that reminds me... You're not easily scared, are you?

#10033 Spot 0
player

What do you mean...?

#10034 Spot 0
Jane

Well, the location we'll be hitting today is the abandoned mansion at the edge of One Han City – the one everyone's saying is haunted.

#10035 Spot 0
Jane

Rumor has it that every person to occupy it since it was built has died under mysterious circumstances.

#10036 Spot 0
Jane

Even the most recent occupant vanished with no explanation... The mansion has been a hotbed of paranormal activity ever since.

#10037 Spot 0
Wait, hold on...! → Spot 10039
Why are you only telling me this now?! → Spot 10039
#10039 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho! You're not scared, are you? Relax!

#10040 Spot 0
Jane

I'm a skeptic through and through. Show me the evidence that proves the existence of the paranormal!

#10041 Spot 0
Jane

I intend to expose all that trickery with rigorous logic... Ah, looks like we're here.

#10042 Spot 0
...Is it too late to turn back? → Spot 10044
Maybe we should come back another time when we're better prepared! → Spot 10044
#10044 Spot 0
Jane

Hellooo? Anyone home? Coming in now, excuse us!

#10045 Spot 0
player

W-wait for me!

#10046 Spot 0
It's so dark... → Spot 10047
#10047 Spot 0
Jane

Hmm... The air is more humid in here, and it's at least three degrees colder than outside.

#10048 Spot 0
Jane

You smell that? It's musty, like rotting wood. Must be a leak in here somewhere.

#10049 Spot 0
Jane

Looks like the place hasn't been maintained in quite some time. That's hardly a surprise, though. The ghost stories scare most people off.

#10050 Spot 0
Jane

Good thing, too – with nobody here, we can carry out our investigation in peace. Hey, pass me a flashlight.

#10051 Spot 0
On it. → Spot 10052
#10052 Spot 0
Jane

Hmm... Nice decor, but the place is far more run-down than I was expecting...

#10053 Spot 0
Jane

The power's out, and the steps to the second floor are badly rotted. Be careful when we go up there, okay?

#10054 Spot 0

Just as Jane says this, a terrifying sound echoes from upstairs.

#10055 Spot 0

...Thud! ...Thud! ...Thud!

#10056 Spot 0

...It sounds like the footsteps of a massive creature... With a closer listen, I can even make out a monstrous growling sound...

#10057 Spot 0
Ghosts are real?! → Spot 10059
Jane! Did you hear that?! → Spot 10059
#10059 Spot 0
Jane

Sounds like someone's walking around up there. Fascinating, this could be the clue that cracks the case!

#10060 Spot 0
About that... I think we could make it if we leave now! → Spot 10237
Do you have a lead? → Spot 10062
#10062 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho... Unshaken in the face of paranormal events – just one more quality I look for in an assistant!

#10063 Spot 0
Jane

Listen closely – those footsteps sound hefty, but there's no variation in the weight or rhythm... almost like the sound is being made by something mechanical.

#10064 Spot 0
Jane

I'm more inclined to believe the noise is being produced by an object than by a living being... So, you can relax.

#10065 Spot 0

She then presses her ear against the wall and, closing her eyes, listens intently for a few seconds.

#10066 Spot 0
Jane

...I see, from over there?

#10067 Spot 0

Jane points at the wall. Following her finger, I see an opened valve.

#10068 Spot 0
Jane

Why's it all the way up there?! Didn't anyone give a second thought to maintaining this place?!

#10069 Spot 0
What do we do now...? → Spot 10071
I should have brought a ladder. → Spot 10071
#10071 Spot 0
Jane

This won't be easy, but you'll never be completely prepared for every situation. We'll just have to problem-solve with the tools we have.

#10072 Spot 0
Jane

Tools... tools... Hmm...

#10073 Spot 0
player

You can stare at me all you want, but I can't produce tools out of thin air...

#10074 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho, I know what to do! You, hold me up so I can get a little higher!

#10075 Spot 0
player

What am I, a human ladder...?!

#10076 Spot 0
Jane

That's just part of team work! Ready, set, go!

#10077 Spot 0
Jane

...Try and hold me steady, would you? I don't exactly love heights...!

#10078 Spot 0

As instructed, I lift her up as high as I can. She's much lighter than I anticipated. She may have seemed a little scared, but she proceeds decisively.

#10079 Spot 0
player

Good...?

#10080 Spot 0
Jane

Hnngg... Almost... there!!

#10081 Spot 0
Jane

Got it!

#10082 Spot 0

Jane gives me a thumbs-up. She cautiously climbs back down, then straightens out her clothes.

#10083 Spot 0
Jane

Whew... That should do the trick! Can you hear anything now?

#10084 Spot 0
Huh? The footsteps... They've stopped?! → Spot 10086
Was it an issue with the plumbing? → Spot 10086
#10086 Spot 0
Jane

That's right. Sudden changes in water pressure in old, neglected pipes can produce the "water hammer" effect.

#10087 Spot 0
Jane

Basically, when water flowing through a pipe is suddenly shut off, the water's momentum triggers a pressure wave that rebounds and strikes the pipe repeatedly, sounding much like a hammer.

#10088 Spot 0
Jane

Since the pipes run through the mansion's floors and walls, the vibrations were amplified by the open spaces to the point that they sounded like a giant walking around upstairs. Meanwhile, that growling sound earlier was just air in the pipes.

#10089 Spot 0
Jane

That said... this suggests that a water source was deliberately turned on somewhere in the mansion. Our adversary could be right nearby, so we'd better tread carefully... Hm?

#10090 Spot 0
player

Is something wrong?

#10091 Spot 0
Jane

...Look at the wall next to the pipe. Do you see something stuck to it?

#10092 Spot 0
player

Huh? You're right, it looks like... a wet piece of paper?

#10093 Spot 0
Jane

Let me see...!

#10094 Spot 0
Jane

...

#10095 Spot 0
Jane...? → Spot 10096
#10096 Spot 0
Jane

This... is from my grandma's manuscript!

#10097 Spot 0
player

I think I remember you showing me this before...

#10098 Spot 0
Jane

...Yes, it's the manuscript that famous author left behind – the one who founded the Detective X Agency and wrote the bestseller, The Adventures of Jane Christie.

#10099 Spot 0
Jane

The ending to the series is there in my grandma's unpublished manuscript...

#10100 Spot 0
Jane

You know, she's the reason I decided to become a detective.

#10101 Spot 0

Jane's expression darkens for a moment. She once mentioned that her grandmother passed away before publishing the final novel in the series, leaving only a manuscript behind.

#10102 Spot 0

She was so excited when she showed it to me. She always wore her detective's gloves when taking out the manuscript, and handled it with the utmost care so as to perfectly preserve it... That manuscript is Jane's treasure.

#10103 Spot 0
player

Jane...

#10104 Spot 0
Jane

Ahem... It's okay... Grandma's manuscript should be locked away safely at the detective agency in a reinforced vault... This is only a copy... we can't jump to any conclusions until we check the original...

#10105 Spot 0
Jane

But that plumbing puzzle from earlier and the atmosphere in this mansion are a lot like scenes from Grandma's novels. Perhaps "D" has had their sights set on the manuscript for some time now...

#10106 Spot 0
Jane

So... I'm afraid we can't rule out the possibility that "D" really did get their hands on Grandma's manuscript. As for the staging of the scene and the underlying motive...

#10107 Spot 0
Could this all have been bait to lure us here? → Spot 10109
Are they hoping this will make them go viral...? → Spot 10109
#10109 Spot 0
Jane

Hmm... We'll need more clues before we can start theorizing.

#10110 Spot 0
Jane

What we can say for certain, however, is that the suspect knows both Grandma's novels and me very well... You could almost say they're after me.

#10111 Spot 0
Jane

Stay alert from here. Whatever they're plotting, we'll just have to be ready to react. Let's go check out the next room.

#10112 Spot 0
player

This room... smells a little different from the last one, doesn't it?

#10113 Spot 0
Jane

Indeed... There's a slight pungency in the air. Smells like turpentine.

#10114 Spot 0
Jane

It's the smell of the pigments used in fine oil paintings. I think... this room must have been a studio, or an exhibition room.

#10115 Spot 0
Jane

If I'm not mistaken, long-term exposure to turpentine can lead to chronic toxicity in painters... The sufferer would likely exhibit signs of mental instability, which could account for the rumors about the hauntings.

#10116 Spot 0
Jane

Shine that flashlight on the wall in the center of this room, would you?

#10117 Spot 0
(Do as she asks) → Spot 10118
#10118 Spot 0

As I cast the beam of light over the wall, a towering oil portrait splays into view.

#10119 Spot 0

It's a painting of a woman, and the scary part is... two streams of red liquid are trickling from her eyes, like blood...

#10120 Spot 0

Not only that... in this eerie light and atmosphere, it looks like her eyes are locked onto me...!

#10121 Spot 0
player

Is this painting watching me?!

#10122 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho, now it's getting interesting!

#10123 Spot 0
Um... I don't think I'm ready for this! → Spot 10237
What sort of game are they playing this time? → Spot 10125
#10125 Spot 0
Jane

Fascinating. Would you pass me the masks we prepared earlier?

#10126 Spot 0
Jane

Hmm... This color and consistency could only mean...

#10127 Spot 0

Jane extends a gloved finger and collects a bit of the "blood." Cautiously, she gives it a sniff.

#10128 Spot 0
Isn't that dangerous?! → Spot 10130
Jane... are you okay? → Spot 10130
#10130 Spot 0
Jane

Relax, dear assistant. This isn't real blood, it's artificial – it smells of honey, which must have been used as an additive to increase the fluid's viscosity.

#10131 Spot 0
Jane

The question is... how did they make it look like the painting was weeping blood as soon as we entered this room...?

#10132 Spot 0
Jane

Give me a hand, would you? I want to see the back of this painting.

#10133 Spot 0
player

On it!

#10134 Spot 0
Jane

I see... It's a mechanism connecting the door to these blood bags behind the painting. As expected, another scene from Grandma's novels.

#10135 Spot 0
player

Hey, Jane... Does the backing board look loose anywhere?

#10136 Spot 0
Jane

Excellent! Your observation skills have improved, dear assistant! Let's see what's behind this...

#10137 Spot 0
Jane

...As expected.

#10138 Spot 0
player

Let me guess, more of the manuscript?

#10139 Spot 0
Jane

...If the circumstances weren't so dire, I would commend your powers of deduction.

#10140 Spot 0
Jane

That's Grandma's handwriting, I'm certain of it...

#10141 Spot 0
Jane

It's another photocopy, increasing the probability that the suspect is already in possession of the original manuscript.

#10142 Spot 0
player

Every move we've made... has been according to their plan.

#10143 Spot 0
Jane

It's no coincidence that the pages have appeared right after we've solved the puzzles.

#10144 Spot 0
Jane

...This isn't your run-of-the-mill criminal. We'll need to be at the top of our game from here on out.

#10145 Spot 0
I'll have your back! → Spot 10147
I'll keep you safe! → Spot 10147
#10147 Spot 0
Jane

Great...! I feel much better knowing you're at my side! Come on, we have a case to investigate!

#10148 Spot 0
player

Everything is starting to look the same in here...

#10149 Spot 0
Jane

Huh? At the end of the hall... Do you see someone?

#10150 Spot 0
player

?!?!

#10151 Spot 0

Clear as day, on the wall at the end of the hallway... is a life-sized silhouette of a hanged person.

#10152 Spot 0

This slender specter even looks like it's swaying with a faint rhythm...

#10153 Spot 0
Right... Time to run the other way! → Spot 10237
Tricks like that don't scare me! → Spot 10155
#10155 Spot 0
Jane

Heh, you already have the cool-headedness of a bona fide assistant!

#10156 Spot 0
Jane

You're right, this is definitely another one of the suspect's tricks... and the reason...

#10157 Spot 0
Jane

Shine a light on the ceiling, would you?

#10158 Spot 0
(Do as she asks) → Spot 10159
#10159 Spot 0
player

There's no rope...?

#10160 Spot 0
Jane

Nope. And if there's no rope, how could someone really be hanging there? If we look at the angle of the light...

#10161 Spot 0
Jane

Hold the flashlight there for me. I'll be right back.

#10162 Spot 0
player

Leave it to me!

#10163 Spot 0

Jane strides down the hallway, vanishing from view at the other end. Then comes a strange noise.

#10164 Spot 0
Jane!! → Spot 10166
(Run after her) → Spot 10166
#10166 Spot 0

I find Jane standing smugly with her hands on her hips – she's fine. Something before her, however, is lying in disarray...

#10167 Spot 0

It's the base of an antique music box. On top, wire has been tied haphazardly around paper scraps and twigs, twisting them into an eerie shape. Beside it is a broken mirror.

#10168 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho... Sounds like you ran here. Were you that worried about me?

#10169 Spot 0
Jane

Relax! Our adversary is recreating scenes from Grandma's books, so I already know the answer to the puzzle!

#10170 Spot 0
player

Isn't your safety my business as your assistant?

#10171 Spot 0
Jane

...Th-that's right! Why are you sounding so cool all of a sudden...?

#10172 Spot 0
Jane

Ahem! Look over here and I'll explain how it works!

#10173 Spot 0
Jane

The bundle of paper and twigs might not look like it has a discernible shape, but from a certain angle, the moonlight reflecting off the mirror casts a silhouette resembling a person onto the wall.

#10174 Spot 0
Jane

Throw in this music box's turning mechanism, and you have a hanging figure swaying in midair.

#10175 Spot 0
Jane

That's the truth behind what we saw before – it was nothing more than a simple projection, and I've already taken care of it!

#10176 Spot 0
Jane

Ugh...

#10177 Spot 0
player

Are you okay? You don't look so good...

#10178 Spot 0
Jane

...I have a bad feeling.

#10179 Spot 0
Jane

The noise in the pipes, the timed painting trick, using moonlight to cast an image...

#10180 Spot 0
Jane

Whoever's in this mansion, they aren't some wannabe ABC theft copycat. This person is well-versed in construction, physics, and even psychology.

#10181 Spot 0
Jane

And... they're deeply familiar with my grandma's books, clearly – all of those mechanisms were just like ones that appeared in her novels...

#10182 Spot 0
Jane

And crucially, I know for a fact that this last trick is a scene straight out of her unpublished manuscript...!

#10183 Spot 0
player

You mean... "D" actually has the original manuscript...?!

#10184 Spot 0
Jane

And...

#10185 Spot 0

#10190 Spot 0

Like in a detective novel, some force seems to be practically drawing us closer and closer to the truth...

#10191 Spot 0
Jane

Look, over there! Is that a glimmer of light at the end of the hall?

#10192 Spot 0
player

I... think so?

#10193 Spot 0
Jane

Let's go check it out...!

#10194 Spot 0

As we approach the light source, a rare expression crosses Jane's face – one of panic.

#10195 Spot 0
Jane

Something's on fire... Is that the rest of the manuscript?!

#10196 Spot 0
Jane

"D," you...!!

#10197 Spot 0
player

Jane...! Wait a minute!

#10198 Spot 0

But Jane is already rushing over to the flaming pages. With each step she takes, a faint clicking sound echoes in the darkness.

#10199 Spot 0

Not good...!

Stop, it's too dangerous!! → Spot 10202
(Grab Jane and yank her back) → Spot 10202
#10202 Spot 0

As I pull Jane back, a plastic bucket plummets down from a high shelf up above and crashes to the floor, sending an echo throughout the mansion and spilling black paint all over the floor.

#10203 Spot 0

If I hadn't reacted when I did, that bucket would have landed right on Jane's head.

#10204 Spot 0
Jane

Hah... Hah...

I-I'm fine...

Sorry...

#10209 Spot 0
Jane

I was so worried about the manuscript that I completely lost it for a moment there...

#10210 Spot 0
Jane

For all that I pride myself on being a great detective, I still fell for their mind game – and even put us in danger...

#10211 Spot 0
It's okay, I've still got your back. → Spot 10213
You're only human. → Spot 10213

Whew...

#10214 Spot 0
Jane

Thank you, {var:player_nickname}. If Grandma were here, she'd probably give me a good smack upside the head.

#10215 Spot 0
Huh, so that's what she was like... → Spot 10216
#10216 Spot 0
Jane

But thanks to you... I've fully regained my composure.

#10217 Spot 0
Jane

Think about it, only a die-hard fan would be so determined to recreate scenes from Grandma's novels. There's no way they would actually burn her original manuscript.

#10218 Spot 0
Jane

If you look more closely... what's burning is just a pile of ordinary papers. I suspect that "D" used white phosphorus.

#10219 Spot 0
Jane

When we closed that valve earlier, the water level inside the pipe dropped, exposing the hidden white phosphorus to the air and causing it to oxidize and ignite... Then, the flames traveled up a connecting rope straight into the papers arranged in advance – all to create the illusion that the manuscript had been set ablaze.

#10220 Spot 0
player

I see... Just how many tricks does "D" have up their sleeve?

#10221 Spot 0
Jane

So, while we may be a little worse for wear right now, I don't think this was a total loss.

#10222 Spot 0
Jane

At least... I think I'm beginning to understand the criminal's motive.

#10223 Spot 0
Jane

"D" is probably a hardcore fan of The Adventures of Jane Christie and resents that I solved the ABC theft case. So, they rigged up this horror house just to mock me and showcase their gift for criminal behavior.

#10224 Spot 0
Jane

And if that's the case, then "D" wouldn't pass up the opportunity to taunt me in the final trap. Come, help me inspect the scene.

#10225 Spot 0
player

The bottom of this bucket... seems to have writing on it.

#10226 Spot 0
Jane

...Honestly, they even applied a waterproof coating. You can see it if you look from a slightly different angle.

Jane

When the arms of the giant fall and meet, twilight's final chapter will be complete.

Remember our criminal profiling exercise from before?

#10232 Spot 0

The intimate knowledge of my past, the painstakingly accurate recreations of scenes from the novels, the compulsive tendencies evident in how the traps were set, along with this waterproof coating used to leave me a message I was bound to find...

#10233 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho...! With these clues, I think I can already begin to deduce the criminal's motive and modus operandi!

#10234 Spot 0

Jane turns her head. The confusion and fear in her eyes have cleared, replaced by a radiance as brilliant as a star.

#10235 Spot 0
Jane

I'll be getting that manuscript, as well as my honor, back with my own two hands!

#10236 Spot 0End
Jane

Come! The real showdown against "D"... begins now!

Sigh... Looks like converting my assistant to my brand of skepticism will be harder than I thought.

#10238 Spot 0
Jane

Fine, I guess we'll just call it a day!

#10239 Spot 0
player

This isn't a matter of beliefs! We could actually be in danger!

#10240 Spot 0
Jane

Hmm... You're right, we didn't come fully prepared for this. Let's regroup and make another attempt!

#10241 Spot 0

And so, we fled the spooky mansion.

#10242 Spot 0

Later, just when I was about to contact Jane to plan our return to the mansion, she called me on the phone first.

#10243 Spot 0
Jane

H-hey!! D-do you remember what the date was the day we went to the mansion?!

#10244 Spot 0
player

Of course. It was the 17th, if I'm not mistaken. Is everything okay?

#10245 Spot 0
Jane

W-well according to this news report, that mansion was demolished on the 15th!

#10246 Spot 0
player

Excuse me?!!!

#10247 Spot 0

Ah... Ahaha... It must have been a dream! Or maybe we just misremembered the date...!

I... I'll get to the b-bottom of this...! My voice is only sh-shaking... because I'm c-cold...! Bring me a jacket! Quickly!

(Three days ago...)

#10001 Spot 0
Jane

Well... No bugs detected, and the privacy film's all set on the windows...

#10002 Spot 0
Jane

Looking good. Now I can finally clear my head and think.

#10003 Spot 0
player

But Jane... why did we have to come all the way to my place to do this?

#10004 Spot 0
Jane

Well, I just couldn't leave my precious assistant all alone, could I?

#10005 Spot 0
Jane

Honestly, it's just a tactical precaution. My detective's intuition never lies!

#10006 Spot 0
Jane

After all, if they managed to steal my grandma's manuscript, they've got to know a thing or two about snooping around.

#10007 Spot 0
Jane

I've already set up security at my place, but I realized there was one more vital location that needed protection.

#10008 Spot 0
So that's why you're here... → Spot 10009
#10009 Spot 0
Jane

Relax! You've been acting like you're on edge ever since I walked in.

#10010 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho... It's fine. Anyone would be starstruck by a sudden visit from a genius detective like me.

#10011 Spot 0
player

Actually, Jane, you've been standing there with crossed arms and a tapping foot the whole time.

#10012 Spot 0
player

If I remember your body language lessons correctly, that means you're the one who's on edge...

#10013 Spot 0
Jane

Huh? Me? You think?

#10014 Spot 0
Jane

Oh... well, yeah! I mean, sure! That must be it!

#10015 Spot 0
Jane

I-I was just thinking... You've done a great job with your counter-surveillance! Very impressive! Honestly!

#10016 Spot 0
Glad you noticed. → Spot 10018
Just the basics, really... → Spot 10018
#10018 Spot 0
Jane

Ahem! Anyway, back to the case.

#10019 Spot 0
Jane

Like Grandma always said, "Every action has a consequence, and every consequence leaves a trail." The truth is always out there – you just have to look for it.

#10020 Spot 0
Jane

"When the arms of the giant fall and meet, twilight's final chapter will be complete..." That's what "D" wrote.

#10021 Spot 0
Jane

It's a bit cryptic, but "D" is clearly obsessed with Grandma's work. If we search her books for these lines... the truth will reveal itself!

#10022 Spot 0
player

So... what's your deduction, Jane?

#10023 Spot 0
Jane

This message is a total invitation to a showdown. It's got the time and the place written all over it.

#10024 Spot 0
Jane

So... the "final chapter" has to be the very last part of The Adventures of Jane Christie.

#10025 Spot 0
Jane

...And "the arms of the giant" must be the giant clock tower in One Han City from that same story!

#10026 Spot 0
Jane

Look, the giant hour and minute hands... don't they look exactly like a giant's arms?

#10027 Spot 0
player

So "fall and meet" would mean...

#10028 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho... When do both hands overlap and point straight down?

#10029 Spot 0
Combined with the "twilight"... → Spot 10031
I'd guess somewhere around... 6:32 PM! → Spot 10031
#10031 Spot 0
Jane

Bingo! But technically, it's 6:30 sharp.

#10032 Spot 0
player

Hmm? Why's that?

#10033 Spot 0
Jane

The clock in One Han City has a special design. The hour hand doesn't drift. It just clicks forward one notch every hour.

#10034 Spot 0
Jane

That means the hour hand stays at 6, while the minute hand points straight down to the 6 at the same time.

#10035 Spot 0
Jane

And the date is when "twilight's final chapter will be complete," which is the release day of the weekly magazine that serialized The Adventures of Jane Christie... meaning Monday, three days from now!

#10036 Spot 0
Jane

Well... the time and place for our showdown are set. Let's get moving.

#10037 Spot 0
player

So we're basically walking into the enemy's home turf.

#10038 Spot 0
Jane

That's right! But hey, with you here, I'm not afraid of anything!

#10039 Spot 0
Jane

Wait – let's double-check our gear. Rope, gloves... everything we might need for a clock tower.

#10040 Spot 0
Jane

Just you wait, "D"! I'm taking back my pride and my grandma's manuscript!

#10041 Spot 0
Peanut

*squeak*!

#10042 Spot 0

Back in the present. Inside the clock tower.

#10043 Spot 0
For someone who's "not afraid"... → Spot 10045
...you've been clutching my sleeve like a lifeline, Jane. → Spot 10045
#10045 Spot 0
Jane

I-I-I mean, I have to! It's a precaution!

#10046 Spot 0
Jane

Ugh... What a jerk! Did that "D" seriously plan around my fear of heights?!

#10047 Spot 0
Jane

Assistant! You are NOT to leave my side! Understood?!

#10048 Spot 0
Of course, Detective! → Spot 10050
Well, you'd better keep up then. → Spot 10050
#10050 Spot 0
Jane

Well... if my deduction is right, "D" is waiting for us at the top.

#10051 Spot 0
Jane

Honestly, I knew this guy was obsessed, but this is a bit much.

#10052 Spot 0
Jane

Everything about this tower... It's like a page-for-page recreation of Grandma's novel.

#10053 Spot 0
Jane

Ugh... I've got a bad feeling about this...

#10054 Spot 0
Jane...? Are you okay? → Spot 10056
Is something wrong? → Spot 10056
#10056 Spot 0
Jane

No, it's... nothing. I'm just thinking about some of the dark twists in the novel...

#10057 Spot 0
Jane

Let's keep going – whoa?!!

#10058 Spot 0
player

?!!!

#10059 Spot 0

A mechanical noise clunks, and suddenly the floor drops out. Before any of us can react –

#10060 Spot 0

The stable platform splits in two. Walking one after the other, the two of us are separated onto different levels.

#10061 Spot 0

Now, driven by the mechanism, the two platforms move until they are stacked directly on top of each other.

#10062 Spot 0

Jane peeks over the edge of the top platform, looking down at me.

#10063 Spot 0
Jane

{var:player_nickname}! Are you okay?!

#10064 Spot 0
player

I'm okay, but... what just happened?!

#10065 Spot 0
???

Kehehe! The "genius" detective and her trusty assistant, right in my trap –

#10066 Spot 0
???

What fate awaits them? Will they be separated by death like in the novel, or will they perish together? Let's find out!

#10067 Spot 0
???

Jane, we meet at last.

#10068 Spot 0
player

That voice... she sounds so young?!

#10271 Spot 0
Jane

I know that tone... You're... "D"!

#10070 Spot 0
D

Sharp as always, but not sharp enough. You still walked right into my trap.

#10071 Spot 0
player

What's that supposed to mean?

#10072 Spot 0
D

Guess your assistant isn't a fan of your grandma's work, Jane. Kehehe... this is the classic scene from The Adventures of Jane Christie!

#10073 Spot 0
Jane

The Bridge of Death...

#10074 Spot 0
D

Bingo! My genius mechanism has perfectly recreated the scene!

#10075 Spot 0
D

These two platforms will slowly close in until your assistant down there is crushed flat –

#10076 Spot 0
D

Unless you solve my puzzles and enter the right codes, of course...

#10077 Spot 0
D

Every detail is spot on! Seeing your grandma's story in real life must be a dream, Jane.

#10078 Spot 0
Jane

This isn't a game! {var:player_nickname}! Get ready to get down!

#10079 Spot 0
Jane

You might have to lie flat! Just stay as low as you can! Like a pancake!

#10080 Spot 0
I-I got it! → Spot 10083
Are you kidding me?! → Spot 10083
Is this how it ends... → Spot 10242
#10083 Spot 0
D

Kehehe... Have fun with that, Detective!

#10084 Spot 0
Jane

Dammit! Get back here! Hey...!

#10085 Spot 0
player

This thing is actually moving?!

#10086 Spot 0
Jane

She's not playing around! But don't worry, I can solve this!

#10087 Spot 0
Jane

This should be the passcode screen... Why does it look so familiar... Wait, is this a 1:1 replica of Christie's phone?! Those are expensive!

#10088 Spot 0
player

Not the time, Jane!

#10089 Spot 0
Jane

Okay! Let's do this! First, a mahjong scoring question? Interesting. If the dealer wins with Menzen Tsumo, Pinfu, and Pure Straight... 20 Fu, 4 Han... that's 2,600 points each!

#10090 Spot 0
player

It's still moving?!

#10091 Spot 0
Jane

I-I've got this! This is nothing for a genius like me!

#10092 Spot 0
Jane

"BOCK HIDE...?" Forget the words... look at the letters! They're all horizontally symmetrical, so the answer is the missing "X"!

#10093 Spot 0

Jane quickly solves each puzzle, and the mechanism clicks each time she enters an answer.

#10094 Spot 0

The top platform is getting closer. I have to crouch as the space gets smaller and smaller.

#10095 Spot 0
player

How are we doing, Jane?!

#10096 Spot 0
Jane

The answer is... 1666! Okay! Just one more!

#10097 Spot 0
Jane

Huh...?

#10098 Spot 0

Before she can solve the last one, Jane suddenly stops, but the platform doesn't. The space is almost gone, and the gears make a terrible grinding sound as dust falls on my face.

#10099 Spot 0
player

Jane!? What's wrong?!

#10100 Spot 0
Jane

I-I'm okay! It's just a little harder than I thought, I...

#10101 Spot 0
player

Hurry, Jane! It's right on top of me!

#10102 Spot 0
Jane

I've got it!! This is the code!

#10103 Spot 0

With a heavy rumble, the platform halts its descent and slowly begins to rise. I can finally stand up again.

#10104 Spot 0

Jane jumps down and hugs me tight before the platform even fully stops.

#10105 Spot 0
Jane

Are you okay?! Did she put any traps in there?! You're not hurt, are you?

#10106 Spot 0
No, I'm good. → Spot 10108
Thanks to you. → Spot 10108
#10108 Spot 0
Jane

That's good... Whew... I thought...

#10109 Spot 0
player

Jane... What happened to you back there?

#10110 Spot 0
Jane

Oh, it's... nothing!

#10111 Spot 0
Jane

I was just... a little frustrated by that last puzzle. Anyway, where's Peanut?

#10112 Spot 0
Peanut

*squeak*!

#10113 Spot 0
Jane

Peanut! There you are! I'm glad you're okay.

#10114 Spot 0
Jane

Come on, Assistant, let's go get her!

#10115 Spot 0
player

Just don't push it, Jane.

#10116 Spot 0
Jane

I'm fine! But... just to be safe, maybe you should hold my hand?

#10117 Spot 0
player

You mean... like this?

#10118 Spot 0
Jane

Yeah! Now we can't be split up no matter what!

#10119 Spot 0

As evening falls, the sky turns an ominous crimson, and Jane and I continue climbing the stairs inside the clock tower.

#10120 Spot 0

After what just happened, we're sticking even closer together. She's holding my hand tightly as we make our way up.

#10121 Spot 0

She's being more cautious than usual... but her palm is sweating, and her grip keeps tightening.

#10122 Spot 0

As we reach the next floor and step into a new room...

#10123 Spot 0
Jane

Hmm? Where are we...

#10124 Spot 0

Bang!

#10125 Spot 0
player

Jane, the door just slammed shut!

#10126 Spot 0
Jane

?!!

#10127 Spot 0
Jane

Something's wrong... Wait!

#10128 Spot 0
Jane

"D"... She's recreated this too...?!

#10129 Spot 0
Jane

Doors and windows sealed, no keyhole. No patterns on the walls either.

#10130 Spot 0
Jane

No tools to use, and no path forward...

#10131 Spot 0
Jane

It's just like the novel... The wallpaper is a rusty color, and there are Möbius strips all over the ceiling...

#10132 Spot 0
Jane

I'm afraid we're trapped in a locked room we can never escape.

#10133 Spot 0
player

Never? What makes you say that?

#10134 Spot 0
Jane

If I'm right, this is another one of her elaborate mechanisms...

#10135 Spot 0
Jane

Everything in this tower, and the trap we just escaped from... they're all straight out of Grandma's book.

#10136 Spot 0
Jane

After the Bridge of Death comes the Room of Despair...

#10137 Spot 0

*clack*

#10138 Spot 0

Before Jane can finish, a mechanical sound echoes, and white mist begins to fill the room as the temperature drops.

#10139 Spot 0
player

*cough*... Is it just me, or is it getting cold in here?

#10140 Spot 0
Jane

Oh no...! Don't breathe the air!

#10141 Spot 0
Jane

In the original story, Christie was trapped in a room just like this! It's going to fill with a deadly, freezing gas! What happens next... is too horrible to even imagine...

#10142 Spot 0
Jane

In this "perfectly locked room," not even Christie could find a way out...

#10143 Spot 0
player

Now that you mention it, it is starting to feel a bit stuffy...

#10144 Spot 0
Jane

Since the story ended there, the mystery of the Room of Despair was never solved. Some say Grandma couldn't think of a way out, so she...

#10145 Spot 0
But this is real life, not a story, isn't it? → Spot 10147
Don't worry about the rumors. → Spot 10147
#10147 Spot 0
Jane

But...

#10148 Spot 0
Jane

But in the original story...

#10149 Spot 0
Jane

...Christie's assistant died on the Bridge of Death!

#10150 Spot 0
Jane

The final code for the platform... it was "Death." That's why... I couldn't...

#10151 Spot 0
Jane

I was so worried that if I got it right, I'd lose you...

#10152 Spot 0
Jane

You've always been there for me, but I keep putting your life on the line...

#10153 Spot 0
Jane

All the things I want to do... the justice I want to serve... is it really worth it?

#10154 Spot 0
Jane

Am I really... fit to be a detective?

#10155 Spot 0
(Hug her) → Spot 10157
You've done a great job, Jane. → Spot 10157
#10157 Spot 0
Jane

{var:player_nickname}...?

#10158 Spot 0
player

Whatever happens, Jane, none of this is your fault.

#10159 Spot 0
player

You're fighting for what you believe in, for your own pride, and you never give up, even against overwhelming odds...

#10160 Spot 0
player

I'm here because I want to be, Jane. No matter what happens, I'm with you.

#10161 Spot 0
Jane

{var:player_nickname}... *sob* Thank you.

#10162 Spot 0
player

Besides...

#10163 Spot 0
player

I don't think this is how our story ends.

#10164 Spot 0
Jane

Huh...?

#10165 Spot 0
player

The story says the assistant died. But look at me, I'm still here.

#10166 Spot 0
player

We've rewritten the ending. So now, our future is whatever we make it.

#10167 Spot 0
player

And I'm sure if anyone can find the truth, it's you, Jane.

#10168 Spot 0
player

Every action has a consequence, and every consequence leaves a trail.

#10169 Spot 0
player

I believe in you, Jane.

#10170 Spot 0
Jane

Assistant...

#10171 Spot 0
Jane

Hmm, you're right! I've got this! Time for the genius detective to shine!

#10172 Spot 0
Jane

Hehe... being held like this, it's not so cold in here anymore...

#10173 Spot 0
Jane

Wait... how is it "cold"?

#10174 Spot 0
player

What is it?

#10175 Spot 0
Jane

Peanut! Get up there and see what you can find!

#10176 Spot 0
Peanut

*squeak*!

#10177 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho... I see it now! "D" is in for a surprise! Assistant! Give me a lift, would you?

#10178 Spot 0
With pleasure! → Spot 10179
#10179 Spot 0
D

It's almost time. That detective and her little sidekick must have passed out by now. Time for some photos for the papers!

#10180 Spot 0
D

Kehehe... Some detectives they are. No one can beat Christie but me!

#10181 Spot 0
???

Don't be so sure!

#10182 Spot 0
D

What?!!!

#10183 Spot 0
Jane

"D"! It's all over. Surrender now!

#10184 Spot 0
D

No way! I broke you! Your deductions, your pride... I should have crushed them all!

#10185 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho! You see, in the story, Christie fell into despair because she was alone...

#10186 Spot 0
Jane

But I'm not! My assistant is right here with me!

#10187 Spot 0
Jane

When we survived the Bridge of Death, our story changed right then and there!

#10188 Spot 0
D

That annoying little assistant...! But how did you find the way out?

#10189 Spot 0
Jane

"Every action has a consequence, and every consequence leaves a trail." Remember?

#10190 Spot 0
D

That's Christie's own line... So what?!

#10191 Spot 0
Jane

It means... everything you do leaves a trace, no matter how smart you think you are!

#10192 Spot 0
Jane

Your "perfect" setup was too good to be true. That's exactly how we knew.

#10193 Spot 0
Jane

And my assistant saw through those Möbius stickers on the ceiling!

#10194 Spot 0
Jane

Your game is up! You lost, "D"!

#10195 Spot 0
D

Kehehe... Hahaha! And here I thought I just needed to take care of Christie. Can't believe I got outplayed by an assistant...

#10196 Spot 0
D

But it's not over yet! I've had a hang glider ready for this exact moment! You'll never...

#10269 Spot 0
D

Wait, the rope's broken?!

#10197 Spot 0
Peanut

*squeak*!

#10198 Spot 0
D

That stupid ferret? Dammit!

#10199 Spot 0
Jane

Now! Assistant! Throw the gas bomb at her!

#10200 Spot 0
D

Gas bomb?!!!

#10201 Spot 0
On it...! → Spot 10203
(Throw it hard) → Spot 10203
#10203 Spot 0

"D" dodges in a panic, and the "bomb" falls behind her.

#10204 Spot 0
D

Nice try – but you missed!

#10205 Spot 0
D

Kehehe... You thought an untrained amateur could hit me? Whoa?!!

#10206 Spot 0

*CLANG*!!

#10207 Spot 0

At that exact second, the hour hand clicks forward, its tip snagging "D" by the clothes and lifting her into the air.

#10208 Spot 0

It was all part of Jane's plan.

#10209 Spot 0
Jane

There! That "deadly gas" was just some dry ice.

#10210 Spot 0
Jane

Since CO2 from dry ice is heavier than air, it sinks and collects near the bottom – and in high enough concentrations, it's dangerous to anyone, even the person who set the trap.

#10211 Spot 0
Jane

So the exit had to be up high!

#10212 Spot 0
player

Oh... that's why it was so cold.

#10213 Spot 0
Jane

Exactly, and the exit was hidden by those Möbius stickers... Hohoho, thanks to your sharp eyes, Assistant!

#10214 Spot 0
Jane

Let's head to the roof after we catch our breath... Oh, and bring some of that dry ice.

#10215 Spot 0
player

How about this piece?

#10216 Spot 0
Jane

Good. Just be careful not to get frostbite. Use those gloves of yours.

#10217 Spot 0
player

You want me to... use this to attack her?

#10218 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho... I've got something better in mind.

#10219 Spot 0
Jane

Remember what I said about the clock hands of the One Han City clock tower? They click forward each hour, and that mechanical force should be enough.

#10220 Spot 0
Jane

I'll distract her while you throw the dry ice to force her into the right spot... Can you make the shot?

#10221 Spot 0
Maybe... but I'll try! → Spot 10223
No problem! → Spot 10223
#10223 Spot 0
Jane

Hohoho! I believe in us, Assistant. That's why we're a great team!

#10224 Spot 0
Jane

We're going to take "D" down together. Ready? Let's do it!

#10226 Spot 0

A few days later.

#10227 Spot 0
Jane

Ahem! I'm happy to announce the Detective X Agency is officially back for business!

#10228 Spot 0
Let's get started. → Spot 10230
Hurray! → Spot 10230
#10230 Spot 0
Jane

And I've picked your place as our new base! You're welcome!

#10231 Spot 0
player

Well, I guess I'll need to do some redecorating.

#10232 Spot 0
Jane

Oh, and I've got an update on "D."

#10233 Spot 0
Jane

Between the theft, trespassing, vandalism and attempted assault, the combined sentence should keep her behind bars for years.

#10234 Spot 0
player

Justice is served, then.

#10235 Spot 0
Jane

Exactly. But we're not finished yet. There's always another case to solve!

#10236 Spot 0
Jane

Ready to make some history, Assistant?

#10237 Spot 0
You bet. → Spot 10239
Ready when you are, Detective! → Spot 10239
#10239 Spot 0

Before long, tales of a brilliant detective and her reliable assistant were the talk of One Han City.

#10240 Spot 0

With their seamless chemistry and unbreakable bond, no case was too tough for them to crack.

#10241 Spot 0End

And so, their detective adventures continue, one case at a time.

It's coming down! Jane!

#10252 Spot 0

J-just stay calm! Get down... no! Lie flat! I'm almost there!

#10253 Spot 0

I do as she says and hope for the best... Finally, the platform stops, and everything goes back to normal.

#10254 Spot 0
Jane

Assistant! Are you okay? Talk to me!

#10255 Spot 0
player

I'm fine. But seeing you stuck on a puzzle? That's a first.

#10256 Spot 0
Jane

Th-that's only because... I was so worried about you that I panicked, okay?!

#10257 Spot 0
Jane

Ugh... I suppose my composure as a detective still needs some serious work...

#10258 Spot 0
Jane

No! No time for that. We have to catch her!

#10259 Spot 0
