Xenia
Being born a noble is probably not as much a blessing as most people believe. To Xenia, the world beyond the cage-like walls of her home is always strange yet full of beauty. With a rebellious nature, she is filled with resentment for the inflexibility and harshness of her family. Xenia’s greatest dream is to leave family in pursuit of her own freedom.

Poem of the Rain
Unlock at Bond Lv1
"This jam... It's unbearable." Miss Xenia pushes aside her enamel dish. The oppressive heat that heralds the coming storm steals her appetite completely. Her brother, unbothered, merely turns a page in his book of poems. "Don't let it mar the occasion. Listen to this... 'Rain is a pleasure of the wild...'" A low rumble of thunder rolls in the distance. Maids move with quiet purpose to adjust the awning, while the violinist's elegant melody and her brother's reading intertwine, lulling her toward sleep. Here, nothing is permitted to disrupt the afternoon tea service. It is a ritual as unchanging and tedious as the family crest set in stone above the main gate. And the smile on Miss Xenia's face, she knows, is just another performance, a product of the patience and decorum always required of her. A wind-up doll. The thought comes unbidden. Her fingers drift to the lace hem of her skirt, tracing a pattern that is supposedly new as of last week. To her, it is indistinguishable from last year's "new" pattern, or the one from the year before. Repetition. Always the same. It is enough to make her forget that a heart is capable of anything more than a dull, steady beat. But clouds can only gather for so long before they break. And the rain must always fall. It is just like the simmering discontent in her own heart. It begins with the first adventure novel for commoners she hides away, with the first time she stares out the window at sparrows during an etiquette lesson... and now, it swells into a raging tide within her soul. And so, as the first raindrop strikes the petal of a rose below the steps, Xenia decides she will no longer obscure the true rhythm of her heart. She reaches out through the growing patter of rain, pressing her hand down upon the open page of her brother's book. "Brother... have you ever read a poem that's been soaked through with rain?" The reading stops abruptly. Her brother looks at her, and the cunning glint in the girl's smile sets him instantly on edge. "What are you doing?" "I just... I want to understand for myself why a poet would ever use 'a pleasure of the wild' to describe something like rain..." Xenia shifts half a step to the side and extends the toe of her leather shoe beyond the awning's edge. The motion draws a simultaneous, sharp intake of breath from two of the maids. The butler starts forward with an umbrella, but she draws her foot back. Then, in a single, fluid movement, she uses the momentum to pivot and launch herself out into the open. "Oh, Miss Xenia!" Suddenly, the violinist's "Rain" sonata stutters on a jarring E-flat as the butler and maids cry out in alarm. Her brother's hand shoots out, grasping at empty air. Xenia pays them no heed. With every panicked shout, the rhythm of her leather shoes splashing in the puddles grows a beat faster. Her soaked dress clings to her frame, yet she feels more weightless than ever... so light that the heart in her breast, which yearns so fiercely for the world beyond these fences, is finally free to beat as wildly as it pleases. "Brother, I'm leaving." After the storm, she stands drenched on the lawn, her eyes holding a light brighter than the lightning that just split the clouds. Her brother is silent. He stoops to pick the pearl earring that has fallen near her feet during her chaotic dance, and finds its clasp is broken. At length, he lets out a sigh. "And when Father and Mother ask of you...?" "Tell them I'll be sure to write to them!" Xenia laughs, her face alight with joy. "And if I could, I would tell that poet – the scent of green grass he left out is the finest closing verse for a poem about the wild rain!"
Fairyland and the Human World
Unlock at Bond Lv2
"So... this is the famed 'Fairyland'?" In the meadow before her, wildflowers dot the landscape like stars, swaying gently in the breeze. Xenia smooths her wind-tousled skirt and dabs the sweat from her temples, with a trace of disappointment in her heart. On her journey, she hears from the locals of a place on this hill they call "Fairyland." But upon arriving, she finds that while the scenery is certainly beautiful, it is no different from the other lovely vistas she encounters along the way. It is by no means unique. As it happens, an old lady makes her way down the hill. Still hoping for more, Xenia steps forward. "Pardon me, ma'am. I hear there's a place called 'Fairyland' here. Is this it?" "Oh, yes. A pair of lovers fleeing from their families once find shelter here..." A light sparks in the old lady's eyes, and her voice grows wistful. "The lady forsakes her life of wealth and privilege, trading her jewels for paints so her husband, an artist, can paint her portrait each day... And together, they plant a heart-shaped field with the flower seeds they collect." "Two souls as one, for all their days. They live free from the cares of the world, and spend their lives here together. And the flowers they plant spread into this vast ocean of blooms. You see, these flowers bear witness to a great love... Heh, now, all the young people from the village come here to propose. They say it's a fairyland that blesses true love." A gentle wind stirs, and in it, Xenia's skirt sways with the flowers. "I see... Thank you." After parting ways with the old lady, Xenia wanders through the meadow. She brushes her fingers against a small blossom, feeling the texture of its petals. Looking around, she begins to imagine the painter and his wife – Perhaps they come here to paint every day. In the summer, they set up their easels in the shade of a tree and watch the light play upon the petals. In the winter, they huddle together for warmth and paint the golden sunrise over the snow-covered peaks... "Hmm...?" Xenia stops in her tracks. In the direction of her gaze, a young couple meanders down a path among the flowers. The girl wears a floral crown that trembles with each step, and the boy holds her hand gently, as if cupping a fragile dewdrop. The mountain breeze carries their soft laughter across the sea of flowers. Xenia finds herself smiling. She watches the girl rise on her toes to press a kiss to the boy's cheek. He freezes, stone-still, for a long moment before coyly reaching up to straighten the floral crown her kiss nudges crooked. As the couple ambles away hand-in-hand, Xenia clicks the shutter. In the viewfinder, their retreating figures are framed in the heart of the floral sea, as though the old love story puts forth new blossoms. "So, it's the stories that give this place its soul," Xenia realizes, a warmth spreading through her chest. "Perhaps, instead of seeking out magnificent views across the globe, I can find a different, more beautiful 'fairyland' within the lives that people create." A bird takes flight from among the flowers, tracing a graceful arc across the sky, just like the girl herself as she sets out once more upon her journey.
An Ancient Shrine and a Curious Game
Unlock at Bond Lv3
"Kan!" "Ron! Mangan!" Cherry blossoms drift onto the stone steps before the main hall. Xenia clutches her travel journal, taking an involuntary step back. The stately characters for "Mahjong Soul Shrine" on the plaque above the main hall seem utterly disconnected from the noisy scene unfolding before her – Though her travel guide calls it "the largest shrine in One Han City," one of its side halls is filled with mahjong tables. Around them, people of all ages cheer or groan, and the crisp clatter of tiles drowns out the sound of the wind chimes under the eaves. "First time here, nyaa?" Three figures appear in the doorway. The girl on the left has cat ears that twitch as she walks, with her bell hairpins jingling. The one on the right has, incredibly, the head of a fluffy dog. Only the human Jyanshi in the middle seems unremarkable. The Jyanshi nods at Xenia, takes a seat at an empty table, and begins to sort the tiles deftly. "I'm Ichihime, and I'm the shrine's priestess, nyaa! This is Wanjirou, and that's the Master, nyaa!" The cat-eared girl announces, then bounces over and links her arm with Xenia's. "Come play mahjong with us! You'll love it, I promise, nyaa!" Xenia instinctively rubs her clothes. The formal, ankle-length dress, meant for showing respect to the gods, feels entirely out of place now. Her life is filled with refined games like chess. A commoner's pastime like mahjong is entirely foreign to her. But before she can say a word, she's being gently pressed onto a wooden chair topped with an embroidered cushion. The tiles feel cool in her hands. In a daze, she hears Wanjirou explain, "Woof! The priest says that good fortune comes naturally as long as you're having fun, woof." Perhaps it is the cheerful atmosphere, but Xenia finds herself accepting this strange logic without question. "My name is Xenia. That's a rather auspicious name in the tongues of the Far East, is it not? A pleasure to make your acquaintance." And just like that, Xenia begins the first mahjong game of her life. Though baffled by the rules at first, she is soon captivated by the game's charm. In mahjong, every tile is filled with unknown potential, and every decision can lead to a completely different result. "So... adding this tile makes... Seven Pairs!" "Whoa, look, Master! Miss Xenia is a natural, just like me, nyaa!" Time flies by. Xenia is so immersed in mahjong that she completely forgets she is in a shrine. She is startled when the game ends to find that, through sheer luck, she has won a considerable number of points. "Beginner's luck is one thing, of course..." a gentle voice says beside her. It is the Jyanshi. "But what's more important is that you are willing to open your heart to the experience." Xenia is taken aback, her pulse quickening. She opens her mouth to speak, but a loud crash from another table cuts her off. A petite figure stands on a chair, hands on her hips and a folding fan in hand. "Who dares try to rob my dead wall draw!" Ichihime instantly snatches an East Wind tile and runs after her. "No cheating, you dumb rabbit! You still need to answer for eating my dorayaki offering, nyaa!" "That's Kaguyahime," the Jyanshi says, with an air of resignation. "It gets noisy sometimes, but everyone loves it here." Xenia gazes at the bickering, chasing girls, with a smile spreading across her face. "I can see that. I'll enjoy getting to know this fascinating place..." She pauses, then gently tugs on the sleeve of the Jyanshi who's resetting the tiles. "Pardon me, could you teach me a few more of the winning hands?" A breeze turns a blank page in her travel journal, and Xenia realizes with a start that she cannot wait to see what else this city has in store.

Today's the arts festival open day at Asaha High, and my plan is simple: see the exhibits. But then... I run into someone I never expected to see at the school gate.
Good morning, {var:player_nickname}. Have you come for the arts festival as well?
It's... a bit of a story. I came here hoping to develop an appreciation for the arts of the commoners.
But when I was at the entrance, I was somehow mistaken for a new transfer student.
The student, who introduced herself as the president of the photography club, handed me this...
It contains a file for flyers, presumably something the photography club prepared for the arts festival.
The president, who was in quite a state, insisted that the success of their exhibition hinged on these flyers, and implored me to see to their production.
Hmph, how quaint. A rare opportunity to experience the life of a common student. Since I've been tasked with this, I suppose I shall humor them.
Let's see... another three minutes, I should think.
Come again?
I've taken the liberty of inviting a top design agency in One Han City. Their team will be here in three minutes with state-of-the-art printing equipment.
Huh...?
Whoa, Xenia, don't you think that's a little... excessive? We can just go to a nearby print shop for something like this.
A "print shop"?
Hmm, fascinating. It simply prints them out, sheet by sheet, with no need to cooperate with a design agency.
I must admit, the common folk have their share of convenient contraptions. I've decided: I shall have a printer installed in my study at the manor.
All done, Miss. Will you be paying now, or should I put it on an account?
Do you take payment cards?
Huh...?
What she means is, someone from the photography club will be by to settle the bill later!
Right... of course. Thank you, have a great day!
Next up is distributing these flyers. Come now, my dear guide {var:player_nickname}, your rare opportunity to instruct me has arrived.
I have just now appointed you, of course. You should accept this position with the utmost gratitude.
...I'll give it my best shot!
Naturally, my reward will not disappoint. I can guarantee you'll be wanting for nothing for at least the next year.
Miss Xenia – no, Lady Xenia, your wish is my command.
Excellent. Then for our first step, you shall instruct me on the proper etiquette.
What sort of etiquette?
For distributing flyers, of course. As this is my first time partaking in such a commoner activity, I must know how to conduct myself appropriately.
For instance, at what angle must I bow when presenting one? Where must my gaze be fixed, and for how long? And then there are the precise words and phrases...
Whoa, whoa, hold on! It's not nearly that complicated!
When you're handing out the flyers, you just need to go up to the other students and say something simple like, "Hey, come check out the photo exhibition!" Nothing complex. Just be natural and friendly, and you'll be fine.
Ah, "friendly"... Like so?
No, not a full formal curtsy!
Oh? Is that not how one expresses friendliness among the common folk? How peculiar...
R-right! We're losing time, let's just get started!
Ahem. Excuse me! Might I trouble you to accept this flyer? The photography club's exhibition is commencing shortly, and I hear it is quite the spectacle.
Whoa, she's gorgeous... O-okay! I'll be there! Thank you!
Something about Xenia's phrasing felt a little off, but you couldn't argue with the results – the flyers were disappearing.
There, that should suffice. Hmph, simple enough. Hmm...? Guide, what is this?
Do you mean the drawing on the blackboard, Xenia? It must be a student project...
It's my first time seeing this sort of blackboard art created with chalk by commoners. How fascinating.
Although if the title were moved two inches to the right, the overall composition would be far more harmonious.
You're right, but that would cover up the duty roster. And keeping the duty roster clear... well, that's a matter of etiquette in blackboard art, you know.
I see! In that case, one must adhere to it strictly!
The students here are rather dispersed. Guide, do you have any suggestions?
What if we post one of the flyers on that bulletin board? It's a prominent location, so it should be quite effective.
An excellent suggestion. I officially recognize your talent as a guide!
Hmm? And this... on the bulletin board... Is it a love letter from a commoner student? But why would one hide one's name when declaring one's heart?
These commoner students are more adept at survival than I anticipated.
It's beyond my comprehension. When one encounters a desirable individual, one should ensure one's name is remembered at the earliest opportunity.
Well, I've definitely remembered the name "Xenia."
N-naturally! A name as brilliant as "Xenia" isn't one just anyone gets to know.
What is that foolish grin for...? We should be on our way to the next spot!
Phew... that's all the flyers for this area. Guide, perhaps we should get a bite to eat?
If one is to truly experience school life, sampling the diet of the commoner student is an essential part of the process.
I imagined as much. The work of a guide is quite strenuous, after all. It will be my treat – a small reward for your service.
Oh, I recognize this commoner dish. It is called "oden," is it not? I didn't realize it was sold in schools...
I wonder how the local flavor compares... Greetings. Two orders of oden, if you please. Thank you.
Haha, you must be new here! My oden is beloved by everyone on this campus! Here, have a couple of extra fish balls, a little welcome gift!
Oh? In that case, I mustn't be rude... Here, Guide. This is for you.
Mmm... The texture is more layered than I anticipated. This is surprisingly pleasant.
It seems you're fitting into the student role perfectly, Xenia.
Wow! Today's fish balls are amazing! So springy and delicious... Here, try one! What are you waiting for? Open up.
Mmm... it's pretty good. The radish is also very juicy today... Here, you have this.
(Stares)...
Ahem... {var:player_nickname}, you may also have one of my fish balls.
Eh?
If one is to experience the life of a commoner student in its entirety, then one must not neglect the etiquette of interacting with one's peers.
Xenia, about that...
(Whispers) Sharing food like that... it implies a relationship that goes beyond simple friendship.
Huh?!
Th-the flyers are all distributed! We mustn't dawdle! Come, accompany me to inform the photography club that our task is complete –
Thanks so much, Xenia. I can't believe you handed out all the flyers already.
It was my pleasure. Is there anything else I can assist with?
Mmm, I don't think so. Oh, you're the new transfer student, aren't you? Would you like to see our photography exhibition?
Is that alright?
Of course! We happen to have two admission tickets left. You've done so much for us, Xenia. I really wanted to repay your kindness!
Hehe, if you insist. Guide, shall we?
It is a photography exhibition on the theme of "Youth," held in a small student activity room. And while it is filled with all manner of photos, the decor is spartan.
Unused frames are piled haphazardly in a corner with cleaning supplies. The room's lighting is dim. Aside from the students who set it up, visitors are few and far between.
This is so crude. It's practically an afterthought.
Xenia?
Xenia folds her arms, her brows furrowed as her gaze sweeps across the photos and their arrangement.
You see, the light and composition in these pieces are commendable, but the presentation is so disorganized.
There are no proper spotlights. The frame materials clash horribly with the works themselves. Even the invitations are just printed on plain copy paper. This is less an exhibition and more a workshop for art students... It is utterly unprofessional.
It's just a student exhibition. I'm sure everyone did their best.
Is that so? And yet, look at this work. It captures the elation of students after school so perfectly. It fully expresses the dynamism of youth.
And this one, a shot of students so completely absorbed in their studies. The way their concentration was captured... even a seasoned pro would be hard-pressed to get a shot like that.
For these brilliant works to be buried by such a poor setting, to go completely unnoticed... It is a true pity...
No! I refuse to just give up!
Xenia, it sounds like the photography club members over there are having a disagreement...?
Oh?
Well, what do you want to do? We're not a professional gallery. It makes sense that nobody's interested.
Exactly. We handed out flyers, we all did our best to promote it... There are so many other interesting things happening today. We can't exactly drag people here. Since no one's coming, we might as well go enjoy the arts festival ourselves.
But... this is my last high school photography exhibition before I graduate... To have it all just end so half-heartedly... I can't accept that.
...
Xenia's gaze shifts to the girl, whose voice is already breaking. Unconsciously, Xenia's fingers begin to twist a strand of her hair.
A commoner's regret... expressed with such... raw honesty.
They've worked hard, but perhaps they just lacked an opportunity.
Lacking an opportunity, you say...
Hmph. I remember being trapped at home, forced into those endless, tedious etiquette lessons. I couldn't even go for a walk without having to report it. I felt... powerless and miserable then, too.
Anyway, this feeling of wanting to do something, but being unable to... I know it all too well.
{var:player_nickname}, tell me. If I were to borrow some unused display stands from the City Art Museum, and perhaps lend a few studies from my family's private collection to complement these student works... do you think that might make this exhibition a bit more respectable?
You'd be willing to help them, Xenia?
Do not misunderstand. I simply cannot abide seeing such free-spirited talent buried. Besides, if these commoners can be shown what a true artistic presentation looks like, you could consider it... my contribution to the community.
Anyway, with my experience viewing exhibitions and my own aesthetic sensibility, I am certain this exhibition will shine after I've re-planned it. What do you say?
I see... But what exactly does that entail...?
I don't think you need to worry about whether it's the "noble way" or the "commoner way," Xenia. Just say what's on your mind.
After all, that feeling you had – of wanting to do something but being unable to – it's the same feeling everyone here has right now.
So just be bold and do what you think is right. Say what you truly feel. As for the specifics...
You know the saying: give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Why not share your experience with them?
I see... Yes, I understand.
You are a very competent guide indeed. Very well, I am going in. Be sure to watch me closely.
Go get 'em, Xenia!
Everyone, it seems you are all mistaken about one crucial thing!
The essence of art is not to "wait to be seen," but to "proclaim the dignity of its existence."
Huh? Isn't that the new transfer student?
Essence? Dignity? We're not really in the mood for a philosophical debate right now.
Yeah, we can't even keep this tiny exhibition afloat.
That is precisely the matter I wish to discuss.
Xenia's gaze sweeps over the room, pausing on each student's face for two seconds, like a queen inspecting her knights.
My art tutor at the Royal Academy once told me, "A true artist can make a stone tell its story."
Xenia strides to the window and throws it open, letting the sounds of the arts festival rush into the quiet room.
Listen! There are dozens of other clubs out there, all fighting for the same attention. And what are you doing? Hiding your works away in this room, hoping some admirer will stumble in by chance. Tell me, how is that any different from a princess locked in a tower by a witch, only waiting to be rescued?
I am not saying you will be cursed, of course. But your work will die, unnoticed and unloved.
Huh...? Our work... cursed? No...! That's horrible! I don't want that!
D-don't say such terrifying things...
We know that! But we've done everything we can think of, so what else are we supposed to do? We want to solve this too, you know!
Precisely. The solution is to act. I believe that anyone capable of capturing these images must also possess a strong will to act.
You're right, Xenia... but what more can we do?
Since you ask for my counsel, and based on my experience with countless excellent exhibitions, I will say this –
The theme of this exhibition is "Youth." So, what are you waiting for? You should take these works out of this room and claim the most youthful stage this campus has to offer, should you not?
The most youthful stage... you mean... Of course! We can turn the entire campus into our gallery!
Precisely. Use the entire campus as your gallery. Let every photograph find its most lively and fitting location.
For example... that photo of the food. It's the oden from the cafeteria, is it not? Since it's a beloved, shared memory, why not display it in a prominent spot in the cafeteria itself?
Oh, that's a great idea! Displaying the photos in the locations where they were taken would be much more impactful!
Fantastic! We could put that photo of the slam dunk next to the basketball court. It'll create an interactive photo op where students on the court can line up their shot with the one in the picture!
Oh, and following that same logic, let's place the photo of the track champion crossing the finish line right beside the running track. There's no way you could walk past that and not think of the sports festival!
Yes! That's the whole point! We want to help people relive the best moments of their time at school. And if they're not coming to us, then we'll just have to bring the memories straight to them!
Surrounded by a buzz of excitement, Xenia turns to me with a beaming smile.
{var:player_nickname}, will you accompany me in placing these works in their rightful homes?
With that, Xenia and I get to work. We move around campus, "setting up the exhibition" piece by piece.
Phew, that's "The Finish Line" in place. Now for the last one –
Now where should this one go?
It just looks like ordinary clouds. It has nothing to do with youth on campus. Is it really part of the exhibition?
Let me see... I think I know where this was taken. Come with me, Xenia.
We're on a grassy slope. The wind brings with it the sounds of laughter from the playing fields. On the school broadcast, an announcer's cheerful voice details the events of the arts festival.
What have you brought me here for?
Xenia, here, lie down for a moment.
Is this some sort of cryptic commoner ritual?
A flicker of confusion crosses Xenia's face, but seeing I don't hesitate, she follows suit. Gathering her skirt, she lies down on the grass as well.
She looks slightly tired from the long day, but there's a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth as a gentle breeze lifts the strands of her hair.
Very well, as you wish. You may begin your explanation now, my dear guide {var:player_nickname}.
The scent of fresh grass mingles with the fragrance of her hair. I take a moment to collect my scattered thoughts, then clear my throat.
Actually, I happened to notice the date on this photo, "Clouds."
If I'm figuring this right, this photo was taken during finals week for the high schools in One Han City. At the end of each semester here, students go through a round of rigorous exams to test what they've learned.
In other words, this "Clouds" was most likely taken by a student who had just finished their final exams and was finally able to relax.
Hehe, what an interesting detail.
Is that all you have to say?
Yes.
What? I thought that was merely the beginning of the story.
Oh, right. I forgot you probably wouldn't understand the true terror of "final exams." Let me see, how can I explain it...
Imagine spending day after day mastering the etiquette of a noble lady, all for the honor of your family, only to finally, successfully, hold your coming-of-age ball.
Thank you. Now I feel as though I was there myself...
It's like that feeling when you just can't bring yourself to leave the mahjong dojo without a single win, so you stay there all day, grinding it out until you finally get one.
Th-that... The lives of these commoner students are just too dreadful.
So, that student had just endured a long and arduous period of study. And when her exams were over, she ran out of the school building and let herself sink into the soft embrace of the grass... Before her was the vast blue sky, with clouds drifting freely... And in that moment, she took this photograph.
She was expressing that feeling... When all of your hard work pays off, in that single moment, your very breath becomes as light as a cloud... Simple, happy, and free. Just as she understands youth to be. Is that it?
You have a gift for empathy, Xenia.
Hehe, I would say it is you... who led me into a fascinating story.
Although we cannot know the photographer's true intention, your guidance has allowed me to feel the connection between this photo and this youthful campus. Thank you. Now, let us finish installing this piece together.
Everyone's hard work paid off. The school's online forum blew up with chatter about the photo exhibition, and the event itself was a resounding success! While the students are celebrating, "the mysterious transfer student Xenia" and I quietly make our exit.
Today's campus experience did not disappoint. I am even tempted to ask the principal of Asaha High to arrange a transfer for me, so that I might stay here and experience it for longer.
Oh, did I forget to mention? The principal and my father have been friends for many years.
For you, Xenia, that's not surprising at all...
It is a strange thing... Before you showed me how to communicate with the students, I never would have imagined that commoners could create such interesting, artistic works with such simple resources.
And then you taught me about the duty roster, saying those crooked chalk marks represented a pledge to take turns with classroom chores. It immediately reminded me of our own code of honor among the nobility, where keeping one's word is a matter of pride. I found the parallel quite fascinating.
And the oden from the cafeteria... There was nothing precious in it, just humble ingredients, and yet I found myself savoring every last bite.
And beyond all that... If you hadn't been there, patiently playing along with my role as a transfer student, handing out flyers with me on campus... If you hadn't smiled and said, "You're cute when you try so hard to act like a common student"...
Then I believe this little trip would have been no different from the others – just a fleeting, superficial tour. But this time... I felt like I truly became a part of this place. I forgot who I was supposed to be and all the rules that come with it, and for a moment, it felt as if this simple, vibrant life could be mine forever.
Anyway, it is very important to have a reliable traveling companion. For your performance as a guide today, I will give you a score of... 90.
To leave you room for improvement, of course!
{var:player_nickname}, let us rest for a moment as well. Shall we lie here on the grass and enjoy the campus sky together?
This feels... wonderfully free.
Indeed.
Wait!
What is it?
You were looking at me.
You would only know that if you turned to look at me as well...
O-of course not! I merely noticed it out of the corner of my eye!
Hmm... I was just thinking that there is something on this campus even more worthy of admiration than the sky...
Take, for example, the person lying here on the grass with me. And the way the sunlight sketches her profile against the sky.
Watching the blush color her ears and the light in her eyes, I guess some things don't need to be explained. I'll keep my thoughts to myself... for now.
With you involved, I find myself starting to look forward to this photography exhibition.
Heh. If I'm going to intervene, I might as well give these commoners a lesson in what a truly splendid exhibition is all about.
After a brief discussion with the photography club, Xenia made a single phone call. A team of professionals arrived shortly thereafter, bringing with them a mountain of equipment, and immediately got to work.
Ouch, ouch – I must be dreaming! This morning we had plastic display boards, and now they've been replaced with mahogany frames? And look at these spotlights! These are the same kind they use at the City Art Museum!
And th-that piece in the center, the one under the red velvet cloth! It's an original masterpiece from the X Rose Art Foundation's collection! I heard the insurance on it alone would be enough to fund ten of our arts festivals!
Excuse me, student! Can you reveal how you convinced the mysterious X Rose to lend you a piece from their collection?!
This whole setup is on par with a professional gallery. Seriously, Asaha High has some hidden gems. Do you know who curated this?
Aside from the masterpiece anchoring the show, these student pieces have a lot of potential as well. I'm quite impressed!
Pardon me... let me through, please... I-I can't believe what I'm seeing. Whose work is this? Which class managed to put on an exhibition like this?
P-principal? We...
Greetings, Principal. It was me. I'm just an ordinary visitor. I was only helping out.
Helping out?! Wait... that painting is "The Unbound Rose"! It belongs to the X Rose Art Foundation! That would mean... Don't tell me... are you Miss Xenia?!
Shh – Principal! I merely wish to experience campus life discreetly. Please, lower your voice!
Understood! Discreet! We must be discreet!
Quickly now! Make sure Miss Xenia and her friend are treated as honored guests. And see to it that the press is taken care of, as well!
Get a red carpet rolled out – from the school gate all the way to the main hall! Someone put some stately music on the PA system, now! And security! Where is our security?! We need at least ten people out here to maintain order!
Huh?!
...So much for being discreet.
Haha, perhaps the principal's definition of "discreet" is a little different.
And so, for the sake of appearances, we tour Asaha High as honored guests. Xenia maintains her elegant smile, but I can see a faint glimmer of disappointment in her eyes.
Aaargh, if I'd known it would turn out like this... I'd rather have stayed home and watched the maid water the flowers!
I see. I must admit, I am also curious to see what kind of professional team a noble would bring in.
Hehe, I shall not disappoint.
You mean to say, you summoned us all the way out here to print this flyer?
Yes. Please produce it to the highest possible standard. I have already sent you the requirements via email... Hmm? Judging by your expression, is there some issue?
No, none at all. If Miss Xenia requires it, then you must have your reasons!
Then allow us to confirm your request one last time, Miss Xenia. You wish for us to use... 300g velvet-textured specialty paper, with double-sided 24-karat gold foil, hand-embossed patterns on the corners, and the school emblem printed in a custom royal blue ink... Is that correct?
Correct. And put each flyer in its own envelope, sealed with wax to show our sincerity.
Th-these specifications... The foil-stamping and embossing processes alone will require at least three days. And each wax seal must be made by hand. I am afraid...
There is no need for concern. I can afford whatever rush fee you require. Simply have it done as quickly as possible!
I understand...! Rest assured, Miss Xenia! We will reallocate all of our resources to this job! We will finish on time!
Three hours later, the team returns with a stack of flyers so exquisite they can be considered works of art. Each is housed in a velvet envelope, with the wax seal of Xenia's family crest gleaming in the sun. However...
Xenia, thank you so much... But we just received a notice. Because so few people came to the exhibition today, the organizers have decided to close it early. These flyers... I don't think we'll be needing them.
Is that so? What a pity... Since they are no longer needed, please accept them as samples.
Thank you, Miss Xenia!!!
The materials, so painstakingly crafted, have all gone to waste, and Xenia loses all interest in visiting the arts festival.
Honestly, to cancel an exhibition simply because of a temporary lack of an audience... Do commoners have so little faith in their own art? If only they had waited until my flyers were complete... Things might have turned out very differently!
What's that look for...? Don't tell me... Did I genuinely take too long on the flyers?
Very well. It seems I must re-evaluate my understanding of "efficiency" in the commoners' world.
Do not laugh at me! When I am in better spirits, you're going to show me the rest of the sights in One Han City. Got it?
Welcome to the World of the Nobility!

Here we are, {var:player_nickname}. Welcome to my home.
We're here already? But that house is still so far away...
Oh? Did I forget to mention? The gate we just passed was the main entrance to my home.
My parents bought this manor for me in the suburbs of One Han City since I decided I'd be staying here for a while.
Everything you can see from this point on is part of my home.
All of it?!
You showed me a wonderful time at Asaha High School. Ever since I got home, I've been thinking about how to return the favor.
In noble etiquette, a kindness must always be met with a kindness of equal worth.
So, after much consideration, I thought, why not play the guide myself and invite you to my home?
No need to be so polite. You deserve it... So, please allow me to welcome you properly.
Welcome... to my manor, {var:player_nickname}.
My lady... you've brought this dangerous individual to the manor after all.
Huh?! "Dangerous individual"... a-are you talking about me?
My apologies... {var:player_nickname}. This is Marie, the head housekeeper of my manor. Marie, what is this all about?
My lady, according to my intel, your guest is closely involved with several questionable factions in One Han City.
Marie, I always respect your opinion, but that doesn't mean you can overstep your authority and control my social life.
I trust {var:player_nickname}, just as I trust you. So I hope you will treat {var:player_nickname} with the same respect. Is that clear?
Yes, my lady. I understand. But today is a special day for you... Are you sure you want to...
Shush!
I see, my lady. I shall make an exception, just this once.
It's nothing. But trust me, you're going to love what I have planned for today!
This way, Jyanshi {var:player_nickname}. I will accompany my lady to ensure both of your safety.
(Stares)
You have nothing to worry about, so long as neither you nor my lady does anything to trigger a "Servant Code"...
"Servant Code"? What's that?
It's a set of special orders my family created for the servants at the manor to constrain my behavior and protect me.
I guess you could call them... a series of emergency measures the servants take if something happens. The most extreme, Servant Code Red, could escalate to a city-wide lockdown...
That's horrifying!
But the trigger conditions are really strict, so don't worry, {var:player_nickname}. Just come with me.
We're coming up on the main walkway of the manor. Look –
Good afternoon, Lady Xenia!
The buggy pulls up to the main residence. Maids line both sides of the road, bowing in perfect sync as it passes.
Xenia, we've already seen a lake of swans, two meadows, and three different gardens...
How big IS your home?!
Um... I don't know the exact area, but I think it's measured in square kilometers?
Square... kilometers...
Hehe, you've probably seen enough scenery for one day. Come on, let's go see the house I live in!
Hang on! Didn't you just say we were done with the scenery? What is this place?
Hmm? I did. This is my dressing room. I had it decorated in the style of a rainforest I visited. Here, if you pull back this curtain, you'll see my clothes hanging on the branches.
If this were my closet, I'd probably never be able to find my clothes...
This is my study. It's modeled after a famous technopolis.
Huh? Technopolis? But this just looks like an ordinary study to me...
Well, you can make the books appear by pressing the right button. Like this!
Wow, that's amazing... So what's this red button for?
Oh – that button is for incinerating my discarded drafts. Be very careful with it.
Why would you install something so dangerous in your house?!
Alright, {var:player_nickname}, any guesses as to what this place is?
A... a ski slope? Having an indoor ski slope is just too much to wrap my head around, even for a noble...
Hehe, this is the dessert room. You can try all sorts of desserts if you open that invisible fridge over there. We have the snow maintained in here year-round, of course.
You're right. Even though it's all snowy white, it doesn't feel cold at all.
Oh, there's equipment to simulate a winter chill by dropping the temperature below zero, too.
Let's not do that! I would certainly catch a cold!
Anyway... the decor and furnishings in these rooms are inspired by places I've traveled. They are, in a way, my souvenirs.
Indeed... It feels like I'm experiencing Xenia's travels for myself...
Thank you for the compliment.
I'll never forget my travels... Every time a landscape captures my heart, I have to keep that moment with me always.
Isn't that what cameras are for? You know, to remember a nice view?
Maybe, but unlike a photo, these memories become a living, breathing part of my life.
Take the bathroom you're in now. I had it designed in the style of the famous City of Water.
When I traveled there, I happened to arrive during the annual carnival. I followed the festive crowd through every street and alley of that city.
Didn't anyone recognize you?
Nope, because I wore a mask.
So I could walk and eat without caring about my image.
I could even dance with the street bands until my dress was all wrinkled, and nobody would care.
It is. It's a memory I cherish.
But back then, I was so worried about what would happen if anyone found out it was me.
That's why I hope that one day, I can enjoy the celebration and just be myself.
When that time comes, you'll join me, right, {var:player_nickname}?
I bet you'd be adorable.
W-what, are you saying I'm not just as cute on a normal day?
But I do miss that part of me...
If it's with you, I think I'll have even more fun than last time.
It's settled then! You're coming with me to the carnival next year!
Ahem... Excuse me.
My lady, it is time for your training session.
Can't we just take one day off? I have a guest.
You promised to do this in exchange for time to travel. As a noble, I urge you to be responsible for your own words and actions.
And besides, there's something else on the agenda today... so training cannot be canceled.
B-but...
If you refuse, I will be forced to report this to your father.
...So stuffy.
Fine, I'll go. But I'm taking my guest with me.
Wait, I have to do it too?!
Fortunately, today is the equestrian class. A canter around the grounds is so much more pleasant than standing perfectly still for deportment. Please, {var:player_nickname}, come with me. I have a friend I would very much like you to know.
Easy, Lysander –
A restless, snow-white horse paws at the ground before rearing up. Unafraid, Xenia gently soothes its neck. As the horse calms and lowers its head, she vaults onto its back in one fluid motion.
Atop her horse, Xenia's usual elegance is amplified by a commanding dignity.
Lysander is the wildest horse in the entire manor... impossible for anyone to tame. He only submits to Lady Xenia.
My lady doesn't usually let outsiders near Lysander. To think she brought out her favorite horse for you today...
It seems you're... more important to her than I thought.
Jyanshi {var:player_nickname}.
The way you're staring at me so seriously is a little scary...
She can be quite impulsive. If you could, please try to keep her reined when you're around her.
Then thank you for your understanding.
Just take it as a friendly warning.
So, what do you think, {var:player_nickname}? Bet you've never seen this side of me before, huh?
Thank you, but it's not about showing off. Horses are sensitive animals. The more you rush, the more anxious they get. Think of it as a lesson in patience.
No, of course not. I hated etiquette class so much that I once glued my tutor's wig to his chair... As punishment, my father sent me to the stables to "think about it."
No one bothered me in there. I'd just crouch down and talk to the horses. They'd swish their tails, or come and nuzzle my hand with their heads.
My father said that having a way with animals is a sign of a true noble. So, naturally, he signed me up for equestrian lessons... but it turns out I actually love riding.
I just hate having to be so fake for the "honor of the family."
The whole point of noble etiquette should be to express your true dignity and character from the inside out – to be a genuine example for people, not just playing a part.
Xenia...
I used to only be able to say all this to the horses. But now... with you here, I can finally say it out loud.
{var:player_nickname}, I know today's schedule was a bit out of my control. I hope you don't mind.
Not at all. Anything is fun as long as I'm with you, Xenia.
Me too... Time just flies when you're around.
Anyway, training for today is over! Now it's our free time.
My lady, Jyanshi {var:player_nickname} cannot stay at the manor any longer.
I must remind you that you need to prepare for tonight's event.
Of course I haven't forgotten about that.
Marie, I'll be straight with you.
{var:player_nickname}... is my dance partner tonight.
Uh...
Inviting Jyanshi {var:player_nickname} here today, my lady... I trust you understand you've put me in a rather difficult position.
You figured it out already, didn't you, Marie? But I'm not backing down.
Um... I have a question...
My lady, this is highly inappropriate. You are the jewel of the family, whereas {var:player_nickname} is merely...
{var:player_nickname} is my muse.
...
Marie, {var:player_nickname} is the very reason this art gala is happening tonight. So, of course, there's no one better suited to be my partner.
Wait! Can you two please answer me...
{var:player_nickname}, you didn't think I'd repay you with just a simple tour of the manor, did you? I wanted it to be a surprise gift.
Do you remember what happened at Asaha High?
The arts festival organized by the students left a deep impression on me. So I thought, for aspiring artists, the most important thing is an opportunity to express themselves.
And my status as a noble is perfect for building a grand stage for people who are chasing their artistic dreams.
So the "special day" Marie kept talking about... she meant this gala?
Of course. This is the first gala I've ever hosted by myself.
In my family, hosting your own banquet is a strong symbol of independence – so the dance partner I choose will naturally be the center of everyone's attention.
{var:player_nickname}, will you be my dance partner tonight?
My lady, you're not only inviting a commoner to the gala, you're choosing one as your dance partner... If the Count finds out...
Marie, {var:player_nickname} is a companion I've acknowledged, and those common artists are treasures I want to discover. That's all that matters.
{var:player_nickname}, I worked so hard to make this gala happen. Please, you have to stay and be my partner tonight.
My lady, I still think this matter warrants further discussion.
There's nothing to discuss, Marie. It's decided. You should trust my judgment. {var:player_nickname} won't let you down, and we won't disgrace the family.
...
My lady, ma'am, dreadful news –
What is it? Such panic. How unseemly.
M-my apologies, ma'am! A message just arrived. Ms. Lillian is unwell and will not be attending the gala.
What?!
Ms. Lillian is a world-class musician acclaimed by the elite. Her performance is what guarantees the standard of this gala. If she is unable to attend, then I cannot approve a lineup consisting only of common performers.
My lady, the gala must be canceled.
Canceled?!
No! Who cares if we don't have a big name? The performances by the guests I invited are amazing too!
My lady, for the sake of the honor of the family, I will not allow it.
But my guests are already on their way! They've been looking forward to performing today for so long!
You should understand that the honor of the family is the most important thing.
To me, it is more important that everyone's dreams are respected!
Jyanshi {var:player_nickname}... do you remember what you promised me? You'll convince her to cancel the gala, won't you?
No way. {var:player_nickname} will definitely take my side.
Marie, I'll support Xenia, no matter what.
Jyanshi {var:player_nickname}, you promised you wouldn't let my lady do anything rash that would compromise her status.
But I have faith in Xenia.
Back at Asaha High School, her unconventional idea for an outdoor photo exhibit ended up winning everyone over.
The way I see it, even though Xenia can be stubborn, she's not unreasonable. And most importantly, she's mature enough to take responsibility for her own decisions.
Xenia, you must have been preparing for this gala for a very long time, right?
{var:player_nickname}, I knew I was right about you.
My lady, if you agree to one condition of mine, I will allow the gala to go on.
What now, Marie?
If this gala turns out to be a disaster, I will accept punishment from the Count for my failure as a guardian. But you must personally take the stage and show everyone, in your own way, that this gala is worthwhile and worthy of your name.
I accept. But...
Even if you hadn't made that a condition, Marie, I was going to prove that to everyone anyway!
Very good. As for you, Jyanshi {var:player_nickname}... you must come with me.
Huh? G-go where?
No need to be nervous. Since you are to be my lady's dance partner, you'll need to go through a rigorous etiquette bootcamp before the gala begins.
I have compromised far too much today. This is non-negotiable.
A bootcamp?! No one said anything about a bootcamp!
Well, she has a point. I'd rather not see your arms and legs all going in different directions. Good luck.
Help me! Xenia?!
When all the performances had come to a smooth close later that day, Xenia took my hand, leading me to center stage.
Under her guidance, I managed to complete the entire dance, albeit a bit clumsily.
...Phew.
{var:player_nickname}, how was it? Today's gift was worthy of my name, right?
Of course... The scenery at the manor was amazing, but the radiant Xenia was even more unforgettable...
Hehe, then you'd better remember today and every bit of it.
I will, Xenia.
I used to think freedom meant being able to travel wherever I wanted...
{var:player_nickname}, when you stood by my decision today, I realized what I want isn't "the freedom to escape a cage."
What I want... is a companion.
A companion?
Mm-hm... You know, the kind of important companion I can do everything with – like going to the school arts festival, eating fish balls at the cafeteria, or just going anywhere we want...!
Xenia takes a deep breath and looks at me, her eyes sparkling.
{var:player_nickname}, will you... be my companion?
I can't wait to see more of the world through your eyes, Xenia.
Hehe, has my confidence been rubbing off on you?
Ahem...
Marie?! Not you again!
It's late, Jyanshi {var:player_nickname}. Time to go home. Family rules state that outsiders are not allowed to stay overnight in my lady's residence.
Not this again... The manor is huge. {var:player_nickname} is staying here tonight!
{var:player_nickname}, let's go!
A noble lady is absolutely forbidden from having a commoner stay the night! How improper... My lady! At least don't bring an outsider into your bedroom! That's a Servant Code Blue!
Ignoring Marie's desperate cries, Xenia grabs my wrist and runs up the stairs.
No one follows us!
Xenia... are you kidnapping me?
Of course not. There's a family gathering next month, and I don't want to go –
{var:player_nickname}, help me run away, please? Let's travel, see more of the world, and build stages for more "hidden treasures"!
A mission this important needs a solid plan!
Hehe... I'm counting on you, then. I can't wait.
Marie, I agree that we should postpone the gala.
{var:player_nickname}? You think I'm being unreasonable, too?
Of course not, Xenia. I know you mean well.
But I think the artists would also be excited to meet Ms. Lillian. Perhaps postponing it will make for an even better event for everyone.
You have a point... Thank you for the reminder, {var:player_nickname}.
My lady, I will reschedule with Ms. Lillian. I'm sure you'll be able to host a wonderful gala on another day.
That's wonderful. But the artists I invited are already on their way. We can't let them come all this way for nothing...
Ah, I've got it! There might be a way to save the day!
Hey, Maestro! You can see the entire swan lake from the top of that tree! I bet you'll love it! Wanna climb up with me?
Nooo!
My lady, you will NOT be climbing trees like the last time with the painter! Nor are you to take guests to the cellar for "inspiration"! Our fine wines are not playthings!
Everyone, keep up! The next stop on our inspiration tour is my rose garden!
For the rest of the day, Xenia decides to play tour guide for the visiting commoner artists. She appoints me as her "assistant," and together we lead them on a tour of the manor.
For artists who rarely get a chance to experience the world of the nobility, it must have been a fascinating day.
I guess rescheduling wasn't so bad. Everyone's even more inspired for their performances now.
Still, {var:player_nickname}, I feel what I did for you today wasn't everything it could have been. I'll make it up to you, and it'll be perfect next time!
Run, Xenia! Run!

Whew... *gasp* I think we finally lost them...
*gasp* I'm exhausted...
They're my bodyguards. They must have been sent to drag me home!
That old stick-in-the-mud, Marie, must have found out about "our arrangement"!
Because you and I are going to...
Lady Xenia! Please show yourself! This would be easier for everyone.
They've found us!
Is there really room for two of us in here?!
There is no time to be picky! Get in here, quick!
Xenia and I take refuge in a fitting room inside the clothing store. It's a good hiding spot, but...
Are we... a little bit too close?
Xenia's body is pressed against mine in a tight hug. She is breathing heavily from the chase, and tiny beads of sweat glisten on her brow...
(whispers) {var:player_nickname}, can you move aside? Just a little.
(whispers) Ah... sorry. I think this fitting room was meant for one... We'll have to make do.
(whispers) I know! But still...
We haven't checked here yet!
Quiet! They're coming this way.
... (Holding her breath)
Even without seeing it, I can feel Xenia's fingers clutching the edge of my sleeve.
Hey! Over here! Lady Xenia must have dropped this glove!
Right! They must have gone out the back. Keep up!
Phew... The footsteps... are they getting away?
That was brilliant... I didn't even see you drop that.
Hehe, I'm not one to lose my head in a crisis.
Oh! Sorry, I was on a bit of an edge. But as I was saying –
Here you go. These are tickets for a ship leaving today.
For the next month, we're headed to the far North! I've heard that with a bit of luck, we might even see the aurora! How's that for a surprise?
W-what are you talking about?! This is just an ordinary trip between friends!
In any case, Marie probably only knows that the two of us are together, not where we're headed.
Makes sense, seeing as I'm part of this and I only just found out myself.
Let's get to the docks. Once we board the ship, we'll be in the clear.
They're in here! Don't let them slip away!
How did they find us again?! {var:player_nickname}, we need to move, now!
Looks like we need to find a place to lie low until the coast is clear.
Fu Ji! Sorry to barge in, but could we hide here for a while?
Well, well, look who it is. A moment ago, some men in black came by and put down a bag of Coppers. Seems there's a bounty on your heads.
I can't believe Marie predicted we'd come here.
So, Luck and Fortune isn't safe for us either. Shall we get going?
Hold on, you two. How about a round of mahjong?
I hear all you noble ladies do is have afternoon tea. I'd wager you can't even name all the yaku.
Xenia shoots me a secret glance, waiting to see how I'd respond.
Don't fall for it, Xenia. He's just stalling until Marie gets here.
Hehe, you think that's gonna work on me?
Why don't you find a real rival to rehearse with before you try something like that?
{var:player_nickname}, we're leaving.
Xenia casually hooks her arm in mine with a touch that's soft, yet feels as absolute and second nature as breathing.
Wait, you're not playing? H-hey! How am I supposed to collect the bounty then? Stop! You can't just leave!
Oh? We don't welcome Jyanshi with ulterior motives in this dojo. Now, are you going to leave quietly, or do I have to "persuade" you with my fan?
Oh, no, no, ma'am... no need for that! I'll see myself out!
Okay, seeing as it's an emergency, I'll go ahead and put your "protection fee" on your tab.
Thank you, Miss Fu Ji! I will certainly return to thank you properly another day –
Thanks, Fu Ji!
Hehe... Just the tile I needed. Ron.
What?! I thought you were just an amateur!
I take mahjong more seriously than anyone.
D-darn it! I was only supposed to delay you, but you crushed me!
Impressive, my lady. Now that you've won, it is time for you to return home.
Hmph, naturally...
Wait! When did you get in here?!
Ichihime! Can we hide in the mahjong room for a bit?
Well now, human! Shorty ran off to the market for free samples, so this shrine is all mine now.
...I can work with that! Kaguyahime, can you let us hide here for a bit?
Hehe, certainly! I just happened to brew a pot of excellent tea. You should feel honored to try some.
I could certainly use a drink after all that running...
Hold on, that teapot looks a bit familiar...
The teapot and these tea leaves are part of my private collection from the Moon Palace. A rare sight for mortals.
I'm sharing my treasures with you, so what are you waiting for? Drink!
Kaguyahime will probably throw us out if I refuse. Best to just drink it...
Gulp, gulp, gulp... Huh? Kaguyahime, why do you have four rabbit ears...?
My head is spinning... It's a trap...
Hehe! That offering from the mortal in the black suit was a treasure indeed. It just so happens that its primary effect is to soothe the mind and help one sleep.
This is too much of a coincidence. Kaguyahime, what are you up to?
Wh-what?! You figured it out?
What was I to do? This bejeweled antique teapot offered by that fellow in black was just too perfect for my Moon Palace lemons...
As part of the bargain, I have to hand you over. Hehehe!
Oh no... Xenia, run! I'll hold them off!
Hold on – Kaguyahime, you've been completely fooled!
You think that's a treasure? I use better-looking pots as doorstops! Seriously, take as many as you want – my treat!
What?! I was told it was a one-of-a-kind! So this thing I've been fawning over is just a common trinket?
Hmph... I was just messing with you! {var:player_nickname}, run for it!
R-right!
Honestly, what were you thinking? If you get caught, what's the point of this trip for me?
Xenia...
Don't be so reckless again. Let's move, that rabbit won't let this go so easily!
Welcome, everyone, to the mall's Couple Challenge! It's wonderful to see so many of you here with us today...
*gasp* These guys... Marie is unbelievably relentless...
{var:player_nickname}... Let's blend into the crowd!
Colorful ribbons flutter in the mall's atrium, where a host stands on stage holding a microphone before a bustling crowd. Xenia and I blend in, wary of the danger that could be right behind us...
Hey, you two over there! The couple that seems so perfectly in sync! Yes, you! Come on up and join our "Couple's Lucky Quiz Challenge" to win the grand prize – a luxury cruise for two!
U-us?!
Let's go, we'll be in trouble if we get stuck here!
But before we can bolt, two staff members squeeze through the crowd and escort us onto the stage. A spotlight instantly falls on us, and Xenia's face immediately flushes red.
Let's have a round of applause for this beautiful young lady! Please, say hello to everyone!
Hello, everyone. I am Xenia.
Now's not the time to be giving out your real name...
A noble must never forget their station, no matter the circumstances.
And now, let's hear from the lady's companion! Please introduce yourself!
Well said, {var:player_nickname}. We're clearly cut from the same cloth.
Pleasure to meet you, Jyanshi Kitty Head.
Haha, you two certainly have a sense of humor! And what is the relationship between you?
Well, this is my...
Mhm, we're friends!
Oh, so you're "just friends"? But from the way you look at each other, your bond must be something special! Are you sure you're not actually a couple?
C-couple?! W-wait just a minute!
Get through this challenge first! I'll explain later!
Wow! So you ARE a couple! In that case, let's get to the questions!
W-what nonsense are you saying?!
When you're on the road, you can be whoever you want. I was just trying to get this challenge over with...
That's not what's bothering me! Just... I'll deal with you later.
Alright, question one: Where is your most frequent date spot?
Look! Over there! I think they've found us!
Stay calm! Just answer the question! The mahjong room!
Huh? That doesn't count as a date... but fine, yes, the mahjong room.
Next, question two: What is a hobby you both share?
Mahjong!
Great chemistry! Question three: Use one word to describe what the other person means to you!
The bodyguards are closing in. Xenia suddenly grabs my hand.
Stay calm. Just say something. Anything.
The moment our eyes meet, I know my answer –
Important.
Special.
Awwww –
Such perfect answers! You two might actually win the grand prize! Now, for the next question!
There's more?!
Quick, look! It's Lady Xenia on the stage!
Let someone else have a turn!
We're in a rush!
Please stop right there!
Phew... That was quite a scene. If Marie saw me just now, she'd lecture me again about my "lack of noble manners."
Still, it was definitely a memorable experience in this sort of commoner event with you.
Uh... Thanks, I guess?
Hmph, just take it as a compliment on your ability to improvise. By the way, {var:player_nickname}... that answer you gave earlier... were you really just "saying anything"?
Hmm? Which answer?
Are you really that slow, or just playing dumb right now? The one about me being... "important," obviously.
Are you really that slow, or just playing dumb right now? The one about me being... "special," obviously.
Well, what do you think?
Hmph, using that quick thinking of yours on me, I see. Nice try, {var:player_nickname}.
Enough talk. We have to get to the docks now, or the ship will depart. Hurry.
Okay.
Phew – We made it!
Ten minutes till departure!
Wait... they're here!
A group of men in black emerges from nowhere, surrounding us. The one in the lead looks particularly menacing.
Game over, Lady Xenia.
...
Escort Lady Xenia to the car. As for the other... tie the hands, and into the trunk.
Nobody moves!
Xenia?
Xenia suddenly pulls me behind her.
I will go with you, on the condition that you let {var:player_nickname} go. If you so much as lay a finger on {var:player_nickname}, I promise you will regret it.
{var:player_nickname}, go now.
The moment our hands touch, I feel how cold her fingertips are, and how she trembles slightly. She is not as composed as she pretends to be.
Wait, what are you doing?
Xenia, you have the right to choose your own path.
No matter how archaic your family's rules are. As long as I am here, I will make sure you can do what you truly want to do.
{var:player_nickname}...
Get on the ship, now. I'll hold them off. Go!
...
You're a fool.
Xenia?
A low whistle from the ship's horn echoes from afar. It is about to depart. But Xenia's slender frame is like a rose rooted to the ground, refusing to move an inch.
She hangs her head low, letting long hair veil her expression. Only when the sea breeze tosses a few strands do you catch a fleeting glimpse of her lips, set in a grim, straight line.
I'm not going.
Xenia?
You're right. And I'm ready to face anything, as long as I'm with you.
Because... it's somewhere I personally want to go...
...with {var:player_nickname}, and no one else!
So even if we don't make it today, I will never, ever give up!
Her eyelashes flutter like a butterfly's wings in the wind, but her gaze on me remains unyielding.
A luxury sports car pulls up before us, and a familiar, impeccably dressed figure steps out.
Ma'am.
Let's just get this over with...
Great. I'll be hearing about this all night...
What part of "I'm calling it off" did you not understand?! Explain yourselves!
F-forgive us, Ma'am! But if any harm came to Lady Xenia, it would have been on us! So...
Enough! I will deal with you all later! The important thing right now is...
Xenia closes her eyes and takes a breath, preparing to face the hurricane that is Marie.
My deepest apologies, my lady. And to you as well, {var:player_nickname}.
I take full responsibility for what happened.
Huh? Wait, what's happening?
I thought you were here to drag us back?
No... Once I learned of your plans to travel with {var:player_nickname}, my lady, I at once began making the necessary arrangements.
I did not anticipate you would leave without notice, though, which triggered the Servant Code Red... That's why they came to find you. Again, allow me to apologize on behalf of them all...
Servant Code Red... Xenia, just what kind of life have you been living...
So... does that mean I can go traveling with {var:player_nickname}?
Yes, my lady. I have taken the liberty of preparing luggage and funds you might require. And I can assure you that no one will be assigned to track or monitor you.
Based on my observations over the past few days, I have concluded that {var:player_nickname} is capable of taking good care of you, my lady.
Marie...
That said, please do check in with us at least once a week to confirm your well-being. And when the trip concludes, you are required to return to the manor in One Han City within a three-hour time frame.
Now that's the old stick-in-the-mud Marie I know...!
...Very well, my lady. Go and see the world as you've wished.
{var:player_nickname}, I leave my lady in your care.
I understand!
Look, {var:player_nickname}! It's the real aurora!
It's stunning... This is my first time seeing it as well. It's so much more spectacular than what you see on TV...
It truly is. I'm so glad I could see it with you, Xenia.
Hmph, I told you, didn't I? I promised this trip would not disappoint.
Oh, and take a look at this.
Isn't that another ship ticket? You already showed me one.
Yes and no. Our journey isn't over yet! This is a pair of tickets for a trip to the South.
Will you accompany me next time? I heard there are fruit trees of the most extraordinary colors – they can bloom with flowers of ten different shades! Do you think they might be even more beautiful than the aurora?
Hmm? (Does such a plant actually exist?)
I also want to attend the afternoon tea party of a rainforest tribe. They say their specialty dish is "Lemon-Grilled Piranha Head." Sounds interesting, doesn't it?
Afternoon tea party? In a rainforest tribe?
And the annual migration festival in the Valley of Insects. Last year, a swarm of butterflies passed through and dyed the entire sky purple. Though one might run into poisonous spiders hitching a ride... Oh, and that famous, uninhabited western valley! With luck, we might encounter a mysterious band of ghost tour guides.
Hold on, Xenia. Where in the world are you getting these travel ideas?!
This travel guide. I dug it up in an old bookstore.
So all your travel plans are for places that insurance companies would refuse to cover?
I'm beginning to understand why Marie is always so worried about you...
Well, I've got my personal expert tour guide, {var:player_nickname}. You won't let anything happen to me, right?
I'll... I'll think about it.
What's that? Sounds like a "yes" to me!
...As you wish, my lady.
Sunlight streams through the stained glass, pooling on the open pages of the Code of Noble Etiquette. Xenia reads in a listless drone, her curls spilling onto the book – the very image of a wilting Persian cat.
One... must... refrain... from... being... boisterous... at... meals...
It's just not fair! Our plan was flawless. How on earth did they bust us?
One must sip one's soup silently...
(whispers) If we learn her routine, we can nail it next time. I know we can.
*sigh* At this rate, when will I ever get to decide my own destinations?
Sorry, our escape plan didn't work.
Hmm? This isn't your fault.
The truth is... I never would've had the guts to even think about escaping if you weren't here.
Ahem. I am relieved you saw fit to return, but do not think for a moment that the rules of decorum do not apply.
Which means, no chitchat!
{var:player_nickname}, if I hear you speak to my lady again, her homework will be doubled.
Yes, Marie!
Yes, Marie!
Good. You may proceed.
Marie turns and walks away. As her footsteps grow distant, Xenia springs back to life, whispering in my ear with a brilliant sparkle in her eyes.
We'll try again the next time we get a chance, when Marie's distracted. I HAVE to see the aurora in the North with my own two eyes! And with my new plan, failure is not an option!
Agreed! Let's do it!
