Ein
Ein is the descendant of an ancient race. Their most significant trait is their appearance. Male or female, old or young, all of them have some characteristics that can be linked to animals. He took his father's words to look for a hunting ground when he was 16. Accidentally, he stepped onto the land of far east where his instinct was awakened by a certain object. It is at this moment, he realized he have already found his "hunting ground".

Close Your Eyes Exclusive "Aha! Isn't Halloween great, with how a prey would actually dare appear before me so willingly, are you lost or what? With how cute you are, how about I allow you to get a head start... Hmm, maybe 39 meters?"
Snowkissed Tidings Exclusive "What beautiful snow. A good omen for the year. I heard the lines for prayers are endless at the shrine today. But I'm not joining that crowd. After all... my target for the day is already right in front of me. Hahaha... Kidding, kidding. But if you're feeling chilly, why not come closer? Here's a secret: A fox's arms are the warmest trap you'll find in winter. Once you're in my sights... you can't run away."

Older Brother
Unlock at Bond Lv1
"I-I refuse to accept this outcome! How dare you dig a trap for me! You stinky fox, just you wait..." After several failed attempts to climb the walls with his bare hands, Zechs is forced to admit that as a ten-year-old child, he isn't tall enough to get out, so he chooses to shout out challenges at his opponent, Ein, instead. After hearing Zechs' shouts, Ein squats beside the pit and looks down condescendingly. His excellent eyesight allows him to see the defiant expression on his opponent's face clearly, and he can't help but sigh in his heart... As the tribe leader's eldest son, Ein is often told to take care of the children younger than him in their tribe. This is his duty as their older brother. But Ein is also just a child and doesn't know much about taking care of children, so he can only copy what his mother usually does and scold them when they make mistakes. You're not allowed to eat too many cold foods. You're not allowed to run around wildly. You're not allowed to make trouble... He thinks he is doing a good job, so when Zechs, whom Ein regards as his younger brother, expresses his dislike by telling him to shut up, even someone as calm and composed as Ein fails to maintain the smile on his face. "When scolding doesn't work, then it's time to dish out a beating." Upon remembering his mother's usual approach, an idea forms in Ein's mind. However, his opponent is a famous little troublemaker among the children who has never lost a fight and resolves all arguments by fighting... It'll probably be difficult to make him surrender with brute force alone. This leads to the event that just took place... Zechs drew his newly sharpened sword and charged at Ein, falling right into the trap Ein prepared in advance. This trap involves a vertical drop that is impossible for a child like Zechs to climb out of due to his height. Moreover, Ein has removed all rocks and weeds that can be used for climbing. He even smeared some peanut oil on areas that Zechs could use as footholds. Ein waves a hemp rope that he had prepared in advance and says, "You've lost. Now call me older brother." "Never!" Zechs instantly becomes furious. "I didn't lose! When I climb up there, I'm going to shave your tail bald." Considering Zechs' current situation, this statement isn't threatening to Ein at all, so he nods calmly and gives him a friendly reminder. "We're a long way from the tribe, and nobody really comes here, so you can shout as much as you like. No one will come to save you even if you shout until your throat becomes hoarse." "You black-hearted fox, you did this on purpose?!" "Isn't that obvious?" Ein rubs his ears that are tingling painfully because of Zechs' roaring. "Why else would I ask you to meet me here? Didn't you have any doubts at all?" Probably because he was irritated by Ein's matter-of-fact tone, in the trap, Zechs' eyes turn red with anger. "Don't think I don't understand that you're saying I'm stupid. I won't call you older brother even if I spend the entire night and starve to death in this pit." *swishing* Ein's tail sways gently behind him, sending some dust beside the trap and a few dead leaves into the pit, which makes Zechs' bad situation even worse. Ein looks up at the sky and sees that half the sky has turned red in the sunset. "It'll be completely dark soon..." "You want to scare me with the dark? No way! I'm not afraid of the dark!" Ein ignores Zechs' interruption and sniffs all around him. "The air is so humid. I think it'll rain tonight." Zechs touches the damp tip of his nose and doesn't retort for once. Almost everyone in their tribe dislikes their fur getting wet, and he is no exception. One minute... two minutes... five minutes... ten minutes... Just as Ein can't help but stand up to stretch his stiff shoulders and neck, he finally hears Zechs' voice, which is as weak as the buzzing of a mosquito. "O-Older brother..." "Hmm? What did you say?" "I called you older brother! Pull me up now!" "That won't do." Ein says as he shakes his head. "Did you forget what the teacher taught you at school yesterday? You need to say please when you ask others for help." "Older brother! Please PULL ME UP!" The rolling dark clouds in the sky force Zechs to make a quick decision. The hemp rope Ein drops appears in front of him right after he speaks. Given Zechs' agility, this rope is all he needs to climb out of the trap. Ein, however, has no intention of waiting there and continuing to compete with someone as obsessed with fighting as Zechs, so he gets ready to leave after making sure the rope is secured tightly. After thinking for a moment, he leaves a note next to him: There's an umbrella in the tree hole on the left. I borrowed this hemp rope from your family, so bring it back with you. "Ah, I'm such a considerate older brother." Ein thinks to himself. Zechs releases a wolf howl five minutes later. Surely that must be a howl of gratitude.
Fox
Unlock at Bond Lv2
When you think of a fox, what words come to mind? Bewitching, enchanting, or charming? Or cunning, insidious, and suspicious? This is the first reaction of most people. Even an official encyclopedia describes them as "having no fixed abode" and "vindictive." Ein has always scorned statements like these. Regarded as the future successor of his tribe since he was born, the entire tribe sees him as a sunny, cheerful, meticulous, and gentle boy. Nobody has shown him any prejudice because he is a fox. However, when Ein left his tribe and traveled far away to find his own hunting grounds, he was dealt a hard blow by the outside world. "Be careful of him." "Stay away from him." "He's definitely going to do something bad"... Comments like this could always be heard around Ein, even if he hadn't done anything but ask for directions with a friendly smile. This is something that angers foxes, but Ein understood that he wouldn't be able to change others' opinion of him immediately, so his frustration at others' wary eyes and retreating steps gradually changed to acceptance. "Excuse me, can you tell me how I can get to the subway station?" Ein repeats his question one more time to the clerk at the convenience store and places his hands on his chest to ensure that the person can see everything he is doing and avoid unnecessary suspicion. After making sure that the fox in front of him wouldn't cause any trouble, a bold clerk finally walks up and prepares to answer his question. However, accidents tend to happen when people least expect them. A loud scream ruins the leisurely atmosphere of the convenience store as a young man rummages through his bag in a panic. He shouts, "My wallet! My wallet is missing!" Almost everyone in the convenience store looks at Ein at the same time. They look at him like he is a monster, and one of the customers has even pulled out their mobile phone to call the police if necessary. This is their reaction even though they all know that this fox had just stepped into the store and hadn't come into contact with anyone. No matter how good his temper is, Ein can't accept being accused without any grounds. He frowns and makes his stance on this matter clear. "It wasn't me." "I'm not so sure of that." The young man who had lost his wallet turns around angrily. "You're a fox. Who knows what tricks you used! Do you dare to let me search you?" "That's right. This is the best way to prove your innocence." "You have nothing to fear if you didn't steal his wallet, right?" "You can't blame us for suspecting you. There have been theft cases involving foxes in this city..." The people in the convenience store all talk at the same time, making it seem like it's a sin for Ein to disagree with the young man's proposal to search him. After unclenching his fists, Ein takes a few deep breaths and agrees under everyone's doubtful or disdainful gazes. "Okay, but everyone in this store is suspect and should also be searched by the clerk. Isn't that right?" ... The atmosphere becomes tense as everyone suddenly realizes just how outrageous the request to be searched is, and they all make disapproving expressions. Things seem to be at an impasse, and the only sound that can be heard is the heavy breathing of the young man who had lost his wallet. After the situation drags out for a long time, a customer who has keen eyes spots the wallet under a shelf. The scattered notes and friction marks indicate that the wallet had just been accidentally dropped by its owner. The crowd surrounding Ein disperses quietly, and the clerk tries to pretend that everything is fine to cover up the tense atmosphere just now, as if nothing had happened. However, Ein has no intention of letting things slide this time. "Stop right there." Ein stops the young man just as he is about to step outside the store. "Apologize to me." "What?" "You should apologize to me. Your suspicion and request are both disrespectful to me." The young man opens his mouth to retort, "But you're just a fox..." "You can't judge someone by their appearance. Even children know this." Ein has no intention of backing down. "There are good foxes and bad foxes, just like how there are good humans and bad humans." The young man's face turns red because he doesn't know what to say to defend himself, but he is stubborn and refuses to apologize. The convenience store clerk, who has remained silent up until now, takes the initiative to talk to Ein. "Sir, you want to go to the subway station, right? You just need to..." "No." Ein says as he looks at the situation in front of him and shakes his head. "Please tell me how to get to the railway station. I think it's time for me to go to another city." Suddenly, Ein recalls an ad he saw on TV yesterday about a mysterious city in the Far East called One Han City. He decides to go there next in the hope that this so-called "all-inclusive city" will not disappoint him.
One's Own Hunting Grounds
Unlock at Bond Lv3
It is the second month since Ein embarked on a journey to find his own hunting grounds, and he has arrived at One Han City with lots of expectations. Although the cost of living is high here, there are many generous employers who are willing to hire temporary workers with good pay, which makes Ein's life fairly content even though he isn't wealthy. Moreover, this is a surprising city for a fox. The tall buildings and bustling traffic are sights that he has never seen before in the tribe. He makes his way through various streets quickly every day, thinking about how he can make life convenient like this in the tribe. Of course, he hasn't forgotten to search for his own hunting grounds hidden in One Han City. On this day, after completing his moving work for the day, he is sitting at the same table with his most generous employers—a cat, a dog, and a girl who claims to be a god, playing a game called mahjong. From the elderly to the children, everyone in One Han City is obsessed with this game, and the most popular shop on the street is always a mahjong dojo. In this environment, Ein has learned a lot about mahjong even though he is new to the city. Ein had also paused and paced back and forth in front of a mahjong dojo before, but he could only watch others play from the side because he was put off by the playing fee. As a result, because he is so strapped for cash, this is his first time playing mahjong personally. "Just take it easy. You can ask me if there's anything you don't understand, woof." "It's okay even if you don't know how to play. This shorty will finish last for sure." "Don't just brag, you bad rabbit. Hurry up and sit down, nyaa. I'm going to advance bravely and win, nyaa." His three employers all have different personalities, and Ein blends naturally into their noisy exchanges. The mahjong room becomes more lively with the tile-shuffling sounds of the mahjong table. Sunlight shines on Ein through the glass of the window, and a breeze blows through his hair. The battles Jyanshi fight for points are similar to the battles between warriors for prey. Even the crisp sound of mahjong tiles banging into each other is like the pleasing sound of a wild animal triggering a trap, which puts Ein in a trance and makes him feel like he has returned to a hunting ground where he can roam freely. Caution and patience are required when facing prey. This is also true at a mahjong table. "Pon." Ein acts without hesitation after confirming what hand he wants to build, and places three 8 Man in the corner of the table. After completing three calls, he calls for Kan with the last 8 Man in his hand. Making it impossible to win with an 8 Man after the Kan to trick his opponents into dealing in with a 9 Man might not necessarily succeed since it's obvious that he's aiming for All Triplets, but... Ein looks down—he is a beginner, and his three opponents might lower their guard because of this. To a hunter, this is a rational display of weakness. His bold move does manage to attract the attention of his three opponents. After thinking for a long time, the priestess with the cat ears decides to play a safe tile, 9 Man, which also happens to be the Terminals tile she dislikes keeping in her hand the most, and ends up falling into the trap Ein had set a long time ago and giving him 2,600 points. Compared to the other players' Ron with Mangan or Haneman, winning 2,600 points with All Triplets is a negligible small hand, so the priestess who just dealt into Ein's hand ended up handing over some points generously without realizing the seriousness of the problem. Only warriors who have hunted before would understand that killing a beast with one blow isn't necessarily the only way to attack. The best way to hunt is to slowly deplete the opponent's energy. 1,000 points, 2,000 points, 1,500 points... Although Ein isn't winning a lot of points each time, the trap attacks that he has been making continuously keep his opponents busy playing defensively. The hunting atmosphere attracts Ein wildly. Unknowingly, he becomes addicted to this small mahjong table, and his eyes are sharp and ready to go. "Ron, 32,000, Big Three Dragons! You've still got a long way to go, shorty!" Even the best hunter will come across unexpected situations. Just as his prey is about to be dealt a fatal blow for 3,000 points, the player who moves before him calls Ron, snatching first place from him. A good hunter never complains and learns from their hunting failures. Ein reviews the situation carefully after relaxing and easing out of the hunting atmosphere, only to realize that his three employers are staring closely at him. He remains silent. He has gotten a little carried away after experiencing the feeling of hunting again after a long time and can understand if his employers are afraid of an employee who is good at using cunning tricks. But... this time, this outstanding hunter has misjudged the situation. A furry dog paw touches Ein's hand as his employer's eyes shine brightly: "I didn't expect a beginner like you to be so capable, woof. Setting up traps with Kan is a clever idea, woof." "Huh?!" The girl beside them nods lazily: "I reluctantly admit that you're an excellent Jyanshi, but you're still a long way from being able to defeat me." "You're amazing, nyaa." The innocent cat-eared priestess jumps up: "I want to know how you did that, nyaa. Can you teach me, nyaa?" The unexpected situation stuns the hunter for a moment. After hesitating, he says, "Don't you... think I'm being insidious, cunning, or vicious?" "What are you saying, woof?!" A huge dog's head appears in front of Ein's eyes. "It's a free-for-all battle at the mahjong table. Just bring it on, woof! Hurry up, let's not waste any time. Let's play another game before it gets too late, woof." The other party's matter-of-fact answer relieves the gloominess that has been lingering in Ein's heart for many days. This outstanding hunter no longer needs to hide his claws and can devote himself wholeheartedly to a new round of hunting. "Okay, let's play another game then." Ein suddenly smiles as he looks at the mahjong tiles stacked on the table. He seems to have found his own hunting grounds. Now he just needs to fight with all his strength to become the final king and win his father's approval.

The breeze rustles through the cherry blossoms that are blooming like pink clouds on the branches and radiating a tenderness unique to spring while covering the earth in a coat of pink.
I'm walking on the street with a bag of snacks, and everything seems so quiet, beautiful, and dreamlike to me... but it would be even better if a certain fox wasn't squatting on the ground, sighing with his hands on his knees on the corner of the street.
Ein? What's wrong?
{var:player_nickname}? Oh... I've even been seen by someone I know when I'm having bad luck. That's one more unlucky event for today.
After hearing his words, I look at him and see many broken cartons and squashed food scattered on the ground next to him. It looks like he had just experienced a disaster.
Is this the unlucky event you're talking about?
Ahaha... this is just part of it.
When I was delivering milk in the morning, I slipped on some garbage and splashed the milk all over the buyer's face. When I was unloading goods for a store, a box broke, scattering the goods everywhere, and some of it even rolled into the sewer. I just picked up a takeout order and everything was going well when an Alaskan Malamute more reckless than Zechs suddenly charged at me...
Wow, you really are quite unlucky today.
After all, the great master warned me about this, and I should have taken their advice yesterday. I shouldn't have left home today even if a fire breaks out, the ceiling collapses, or the gas tank explodes!
...I think you shouldn't stay at home because it sounds like you're in more danger there.
By the way, who is this great master who can tell your fortune so accurately?
That great master often speaks in riddles, charges fees arbitrarily, and has a stall that's always swarming with customers...
Yuan Feng?
No, it's Miss Kaavi... But now that you mention it, they do have some similarities.
You might as well say that they are both good at tricking, umm... at making you pay them willingly.
Kaavi?
As expected of the most popular person in One Han City. You guessed it right away.
Haha, we're all old acquaintances after all.
I don't know who you're talking about, but can you refer this person to me? I have a friend who wants to ask about unlucky events recently.
I'm sure this person always tells your fortune... it's Miss Kaavi.
Oh, then she does tell my fortune a lot, but she tells me a calamity involving women is in store for me every single time, so I didn't realize you were talking about her when you mentioned an accurate fortune telling master...
*Rumble* All of a sudden, I hear a strange sound while I'm chatting with Ein.
Hmm?
That wasn't me...
*Rumble* This time, it's clear to me that Ein made that sound. Seeing my eyes focusing on the part of his body that made that sound, Ein touches his nose nervously.
...It was me.
Are you hungry? Do you want to eat something first?
Yes... but I don't have any money left after paying compensation for everything. Right now, it's more important for me to make money than to eat.
When I see Ein's drooping ears, I understand that it's time for me to shine. After all, I'm an enthusiastic citizen of One Han City.
I pat my wallet - I've been quite well-off recently, so I'll treat him to a meal. I step up to Ein and pat him on the shoulder before making my generous proposal.
As they say, every meeting we have is preordained by fate. I'll treat you to lunch today.
Wow! {var:player_nickname}, you're such a good person... Umm, but doesn't it seem like I'm living off you then? My old man will give me a beating if he finds out.
A son is not bound by his father's orders when he is not living at home.
That might be true, but I still feel a little embarrassed. Is there anything I can do for you?
I can't think of anything right now. Let's think about it while we eat.
But...
*Rumble* My tummy is rumbling this time. I was on my way to scrounge a free meal at the Mahjong Soul Shrine, but I missed their mealtime because of my unexpected encounter with Ein.
Umm...
Well... why don't we have something to eat first then? There's a fabulous ramen place around here.
Ein leads me to an inconspicuous ramen shop on the next street. The shop isn't that big, and the tables and chairs look weathered with age, but the thick aroma of the ramen soup fills the shop, inexplicably giving it a slightly homey atmosphere.
Do you know what the highest praise that can be given to a restaurant in One Han City is?
Absolutely amazing?
No, it's: "The food reminds me of home."
Then what would be considered a bad review?
The food tastes the same as the food at home.
One Han City's culture sure is deep and profound...
As we speak, Ein leads me nimbly through the long, narrow aisles and sits down at an empty table. He then pulls out a menu from next to him and hands it to me.
Are you a regular here?
I come here every few days. If you don't know what to order, I recommend the signature tonkotsu ramen.
Trust me, it'll remind you of your home.
Then let's have two signature ramens...
Oh? You've brought a friend with you this time? Good work, for a guy who's always alone! I'll give you two free marinated soft-boiled eggs today.
I look up in response to the sound and see a burly man wearing an apron featuring bear designs that doesn't suit his style standing next to us.
If it wasn't for the pair of brown sunglasses he was wearing and the large tattoos exposed under his rolled-up sleeves, I might actually believe that he's the owner of this ramen shop.
Thanks!
Oh, right. I'm having all sorts of troubles with my part-time job today. About those errands I agreed to do for you, can I do them for you tomorrow instead?
The burly man makes the OK gesture at Ein and leaves without speaking.
Is he really the owner of this ramen shop?
Haha, {var:player_nickname}, your reaction is the same as mine when I first met the owner.
Although he was involved in some shady things in the past, he is now the owner of this ramen shop.
Does he personally cook all the food here?
Of course. Don't look down on this ramen shop. This is his hunting grounds, just like how your hunting grounds are mahjong dojos, {var:player_nickname}.
A hunter never misses in their hunting grounds.
You flatter me. I can carelessly lose 32,000 points in my hunting grounds.
Haha, are you sure that isn't part of your plan to lure in enemies? We hunters have a saying: "Skilled hunters often appear as prey."
{var:player_nickname}, you're probably someone who is brave and resourceful like that.
...Geez, I don't know what to say about you.
Your food is ready! My dear customers, please enjoy the signature tonkotsu ramen you ordered.
Two big bowls appear in front of us after the owner speaks in his deep voice. The milky-white soup base is filled with noodles of even thickness, sprinkled with finely chopped green onions, and has a mouth-watering aroma.
The edge of the bowl is lined with moderately thick slices of tender and juicy pork. It's difficult to find another shop in One Han City that can rival this one based on the portion size alone. Suddenly, the owner's face looks more amiable and friendly to me because of this bowl of noodles.
Ah! It's so hot!
Having a bowl of the owner's signature ramen at the end of a busy day is one of the happiest moments in my life.
You're so easily satisfied.
I know some other places that are affordable and delicious. I'll treat you to a meal at one of those places next time.
Ein, it looks like you know One Han City very well.
Yes, because I love this place.
Why is that?
This city is sufficiently tolerant and fair, and those who work hard won't be picked on because of their origin or appearance.
This place is also big enough with plenty of hunting grounds. Each hunter can run to their heart's content and display their abilities here.
I hope my tribespeople can come here and take a look in the future. The nature of a hunting ground shouldn't be defined, and no hunter should be underestimated.
I don't feel very strongly about this because I live here every day, but listening to your words makes me feel so hot-blooded and excited about being a good citizen of One Han City!
Hot-blooded? ...Ahhhhh! {var:player_nickname}, you're feeling like that because you've spilled soup all over yourself! {var:Shake}
Owner! Owner! Bring us some towels!
Eh? Ahhhhhh!
After some fuss and confusion, I finally wipe most of the soup off my clothes, and the amiable owner refills my soup for free.
This is why it's a bad idea to listen to passionate speeches while eating. It's so easy to knock over bowls and dishes when you get excited.
Although things didn't go completely smoothly at our meal, the delicious food still makes me happy.
Ahhh, I'm so full. You're the reason I feel alive today, {var:player_nickname}.
I wouldn't go that far. After all, we're such good friends. True friends are those who can share their joys and sorrows with each other.
You're right. True friends are those who can share their joys and sorrows with each other.
By the way, have you decided what you need me to do for you?
Umm... not really.
Haha, I knew it. Fortunately, I'm prepared for this.
Ein pulls out a piece of paper from his pocket and hands it to me. It looks like the piece of paper he was writing and drawing on in the restaurant for a long time.
I receive it from him and see that it's a "free employment voucher" with the following words on it: The employer, {var:player_nickname}, can use this voucher to get Ein to perform one job for free. The task will be completed properly without any mistakes. Ein
Haha, why does it look like you're selling yourself to me?
Tsk, when you put it like that, it does sound like I am, haha.
But you can only use this once, so think carefully before using it. Please don't use it for something like making a pair of fox-fur gloves.
...I'm not Eliisa.
I know, I know. Of course, you're not Eliisa. You're my best friend, {var:player_nickname}.
My face turns red with embarrassment after hearing something this cheesy during the day, even if it's true.
What are you thinking of doing next? Do you want to play mahjong with me at the Mahjong Soul Shrine?
Why would I play mahjong when I'm cursed with bad luck? Do I look like I want to deal into a Thirteen Orphans and then a Nine Gates? I've decided to spend the day safely at home today.
Ein's ears droop again after thinking of his tragic bout of bad luck today. I don't want to make things difficult for him, so we go our separate ways.
Ron! Thirteen Orphans, woof! Thanks, {var:player_nickname}.
Ron, nyaa! Big Three Dragons, nyaa! Master is great! Thanks, Master, nyaa.
Ehehe, Ron! {var:player_nickname}, thanks for offering me this Nine Gates.
Forehead covered in cold sweat, I touch the "free employment voucher" I received from Ein in my pocket. This guy... Could he have passed his bad luck to me? I don't want that to happen!
I glance at the snack bag in my hand and decide to stand up for snacks, a food often associated with laziness, weight gain, and dependency. However, if it is served to a hungry person, it can also be a noble food!
For example, dealing in can be a matter of having good tiles and skill but bad tile luck.
If you don't mind, why don't you stave off your hunger with these snacks?
Wow! There are so many snacks here. {var:player_nickname}, you better be careful or you could get fat.
...Why are you cursing me when I'm giving you some food to eat? I was going to give these to Ichihime because she seems to be eating a lot more than usual recently.
Oh, I know about that.
Ein opens a bag of cookies and throws a cookie into his mouth, then he starts chatting with me while chewing on it.
When I was playing mahjong a while ago, I heard Ichihime say something like: "I can't let Lin Lang look down on me, nyaa."
Lin Lang... I think they want to make my wallet become flat!
Haha, then you're going to need to work hard to make money, {var:player_nickname}. I'll share some with you the next time I get a good part-time job.
Although I want to say no, I start thinking about the ridiculous prices of desserts in dessert shops recently. Sigh...
If you want desserts, I know of a place that sells affordable desserts that are absolutely delicious.
Oh?! Asking for a friend - what's the address?
Haha, I can't eat your snacks for free, so I might as well take you there myself.
It seems that food has rescued Ein from the feelings of depression he had been experiencing due to his bad luck. After consuming two bags of cookies, a piece of bread, and a bottle of sparkling water, he starts taking me to the dessert shop at a vigorous pace.
It's a red light. Let's wait for a while.
Okay.
I look up at the countdown of the red light and see there are 293 seconds left. One Han City has its own currency, its own units of measurement, and its own traffic light durations. I silently take out my cell phone and start reading a novel I hadn't finished reading on the subway while Ein explains the traffic conditions to me enthusiastically.
The traffic is really busy here, so you can hold onto my tail if you're afraid we'll get separated.
There's a puddle of water in front of us, so be careful of slipping.
Wow! {var:player_nickname}, if we run now, we'll be able to make the next green light perfectly.
We made it! We're so lucky!
Suddenly, I recall that Musa said Ein is a really noisy man.
Ein...
Hmm? What is it? Do you need me to help you with anything? I guarantee I'll solve your problem.
Forget it, it's nothing.
Actually, it's quite nice to have such an energetic person around me, especially since the things he says show that he cares about me and loves me. I don't think I've really felt this way since I was in kindergarten.
Thanks to Ein, the long road in front of me doesn't seem that long anymore... Wait a minute, it's this road?
Hold on, this road looks really familiar to me... Doesn't it lead all the way to the One Han City Amusement Park?
Haha, I thought you would only realize where we're going after we arrive at the gates of the amusement park.
The shop we're going to is in the amusement park?
To be precise, it's near the amusement park. Although it's a little far from the city, the desserts will be well worth the journey.
It won't be much longer. We'll get there in about ten minutes after taking the road on the left.
I look at where Ein is pointing and see two completely different roads leading to the same destination at a familiar intersection in front of me.
Lush trees stand on both sides of the road on the right, making it look even more attractive under the sunlight. Next to the road, intertwining vines form a natural green barrier with the leaves. The road on the left that Ein is pointing at is very uneven and looks like an undeveloped country road.
Where does the road on the right lead to?
Oh, it takes you to the same place, but you'll need to walk for an extra thirty minutes.
So it's ten minutes compared to thirty minutes...
Ein has been leading me all the way here in such a hurry. Do I want to choose which path I want to take here?
As the saying goes, no two leaves are exactly the same. In the case of scenery, even the same scenery will look different every day.
Besides, I'm very fit, so I can afford to be willful.
Ein, let's take the path on the right.
Sure thing, but remember to tell me when you get tired. The "princess carry" is quite trendy lately, right? If you like, I'm happy to offer that service, haha.
Ein's sleeveless shirt reveals his strong arms at this very moment, filling my mind with the image of him carrying me while running and jumping in the streets filled with cherry blossoms...
I start shuddering at this overly beautiful image and shake my head quickly to get this image out of my mind.
Ahem, the light has turned green. Let's go.
After turning at the intersection, I see colorful flowers blooming on both sides of the road, proudly displaying themselves amidst the greenery. At the corner of the street not far away lies a small artificial lake, its surface glistening like golden ribbons in the sunlight.
If it isn't because Ein is walking faster and faster, I would definitely have the chance to enjoy this!
After several minutes, I finally give in and tug his tail, which makes him stop moving suddenly.
Huh?!
Ein, you're walking too quickly.
Oh, I'm sorry... I'm used to doing that.
Is it because you're afraid you'll take too long while making deliveries?
Haha, it's not that. It's mainly because I feel like I can hear my old man scolding me whenever I start slowing down.
Ein, is your old... father really strict?
I almost called Ein's father "old man" like he does. Fortunately, the virtue of elegance reminds me to always be polite.
Not really. He's quite amiable most of the time, but he is the leader of the tribe, so he is stricter and more demanding of me. That's why I developed a habit of doing things faster and better than others since I was a child.
So it's a good thing based on the outcome.
That's right. I really need to thank my old man for training me to have such good physical strength. If it wasn't for him, I might not have been able to win the favor of my employers in One Han City.
I really like my work as a delivery staff. The feeling of moving quickly through the city is very similar to the feeling of hunting in my hometown. It makes me want to keep moving faster and faster. To be able to run as fast as the wind would be the best thing ever!
Actually, it's good to stop what you're doing occasionally and adopt a slow and leisurely pace in life.
A slow... and leisurely pace in life?
That's right. That's the theme of most variety shows now, and we should follow fashion trends closely. For example, if you look at both sides of the road here, you might see different scenery from what you're used to seeing.
As if he understands the message behind my words, Ein takes a deep breath and slows down. He slowly turns his neck and looks at the mottled shadows of trees on both sides of the road and the white clouds floating in the sky.
Time seems to slow down when Ein's eyes finally fall on the path in front of him. I watch him slowly open his hands to caress the gentle wind and listen to the gurgling of water with his ears.
The scenery around him seems to imbue his clear eyes with more color, making them look as dazzling as sparkling gems.
Look! The cloud over there looks like two people who are wrestling.
I think the cloud looks more like you. Yes, that's right.
Am I that fat?
It's about right if I factor in the fluffiness of your fur.
As I speak, I deliberately pull on Ein's big furry tail, which makes him jump away quickly to protect his tail.
Stop! My fur will fall out if you do that!!!
You take such good care of the fur on your tail that your tail won't go bald after being pulled once or twice.
Ein and I laugh and talk as we walk on the path beside the flowers. Now that he's no longer obsessed with rushing, his pace also slows down.
I pass by this road often when I'm doing my part-time job, but it's my first time seeing all this beautiful scenery today.
It's because you have a pair of eyes that are so good at discovering beauty.
Haha, the most beautiful thing I've discovered is... Hmm, wait a minute... What's this?
I turn around to look at what he is looking at and see an advertisement posted in the window of a shop on the street.
New teddy bear merch will be available for sale from 8:00 a.m. on the 30th of this month? Ein, are you interested in this type of merch?
It's my employer who's interested. Speaking of which, you know her too.
We have so many common friends, haha. Is it Chiori?
She does own a lot of this merch, but my employer is actually her maid. She has hired me to collect all sorts of teddy bear merch information and pays me a generous wage.
I clap my hands in surprise when I remember that Riu Kujou had mentioned that Chiori Mikami was very sad after losing her handbag. Fortunately, a special, kind person took Index home afterwards.
Could you be that kind person?
What kind person?
The kind person who found Chiori's handbag for her.
Oh, you're talking about that incident. That was because the request to find the missing item stated that the finder would be thanked generously. I'm just a worker who's trying to earn more Coppers.
Oh, we're here.
The somewhat weathered signboard of the dessert shop appears in front of us after Ein cries out joyfully.
This dessert shop is very plainly decorated, and I've never noticed it before, probably because of its remote location.
However, the furnishings of the shop are quite elegant, and the spacious and bright layout complements its warm, soft color combination very well. Guests have also left comments and photos on the walls, which adds to the cozy ambiance.
The warmest thing of all to me is the price of the exquisite desserts.
What do you think? The desserts here are affordable and delicious, right?
Oh, it's you, Ein... I was just thinking that the voice sounded familiar...
The elderly woman who owns the shop comes out to greet us after hearing customers enter. Judging from her familiar tone, I guess that Ein is a regular customer here.
Is this your friend? Haha, this is the first time Ein has brought a friend here.
This sounds really familiar. Are you going to say that it's been a long time since Ein has been this happy next?
Hahahaha, I might be old, but I still watch television. Who has time to worry about being happy or unhappy every day? Ein here is happy every day.
Indeed, I've rarely seen Ein look depressed or unhappy, and he also cheered himself up pretty quickly earlier. He is an optimistic, cheerful, and sunny boy.
The best time to arrive is just in time. I have a batch of new desserts that are fresh out of the oven. Ein, why don't you and your friend help me taste test them?
Thanks, it's our pleasure.
Ein takes me to sit down at a table by the window. The sweet fragrance permeating the shop heightens my expectations for the new dessert.
The cake is sweet but not too heavy, and the cream just melts in your mouth... I give it the highest rating that can be given in One Han City: It's not too sweet.
This one is for you.
As I am indulging myself in this dessert, Ein hands me something that feels hard. I open my fingers to see a necklace with a sharp object hanging on it.
What's this...?
It's a gift to thank you for teaching me a new way to experience life. The fang on this pendant is mine. I... hope you don't mind.
Ein starts acting unusually reserved, as if he will take the pendant back if I don't want his fang. However, I'm someone who won't let go of anything, be it a duck or a fang, that falls into my hands, so I accept it quickly and nod in appreciation.
Thanks, I'll take good care of it.
Time passes leisurely, and Ein and I leave the dessert shop after finishing our shopping.
Do you have any other part-time jobs to go to after this?
Nope, I'm done for the day.
Oh? Then what about dinner...
Ein smiles and shakes his phone to clear up my confusion.
I've received my pay for providing information about the teddy bear merch. Shall I take you to go hunting after this?
Hunting...? But I'm thinking of going to the Mahjong Soul Shrine.
I know.
You showed me another way to experience life in One Han City, so it's time for me to show you another way to experience mahjong.
Are you ready, {var:player_nickname}?
When he mentions mahjong, Ein starts exuding an aura of confidence and strength. At this moment, he looks like he is worthy of being the future successor of his tribe.
Of course, but I won't go easy on you.
I won't admit defeat easily in anything related to mahjong.
However, the game that Ein, Ichihime, Wanjirou, and I play at the Mahjong Soul Shrine on that day is a story for another time.
As the saying goes, time is money. After careful consideration, I decisively abandon the scenic path and unhesitatingly join Ein to take the shortest path to our destination.
This isn't about having sufficient physical strength or not. A forty-minute trip will just waste my precious time.
I don't know if it's because Kaavi's prophecy has come true or not, but it isn't long after we start walking when we encounter a sign that says: "Emergency Maintenance, No Entry."
...How troublesome. Do we need to walk all the way back?
Leave this minor problem to me. Follow me.
Because I trust Ein, I follow him without hesitation as he shuttles through various alleys. Although we take a bit of a detour, when I come to my senses, I realize that we've passed the road that is under maintenance.
Amazing! Is this the ability of a delivery staff?!
Haha, I guess so. Every good hunter must know how to avoid danger. After all, we also need to have excellent vision, smell, and hearing.
This is a talent of your people. I'm so envious.
Actually... you don't need to be envious.
Hmm?
Do you want to be able to hear the footsteps coming from next door, the chatter of the elderly downstairs, or even whistling sounds from as far as a street away?
I don't think I would like that. It sounds so noisy.
Unfortunately, that's what I need to deal with every day. Sigh... my hometown is so quiet, so I never thought it could be so noisy anywhere.
How did you solve this problem?
I worked a few more part-time jobs and saved enough money to buy a pair of noise-canceling headphones so I could sleep peacefully.
The worst thing about this is that it's a passive skill. You can't choose to get rid of it.
You understand me so well. Besides, the climate here in One Han City is so different from the climate in my hometown that I started suffering from hay fever. Now I sneeze uncontrollably whenever there's pollen around me... Do you know how much I get paid to run errands for those florists?
Sigh... I can only give up those jobs reluctantly.
Don't be so...
Just as I'm about to say something to comfort Ein, he suddenly shouts out loud.
Watch out! {var:Shake}
After hearing Ein's shout and feeling a strong tug, I realize that I've switched places with him, and there's now a fox covered with muddy water in front of me.
I miscalculated. I forgot it rained last night and that there might be some puddles here.
Are you okay?
I'm fine.
He walks to one side and takes off his coat, then he moves vigorously to shake water droplets out of his fur. The mud, on the other hand, is much more difficult to clean from his fur. With mixed feelings, I drag him to a public restroom by the road.
Ein doesn't keep me waiting for long before he comes back out. Although there's no more mud on him now, he is completely drenched.
What happened to you...?
...The restroom's faucet burst.
It burst?
I turned it gently, and the faucet... fell off.
Huh?
Oops, where's the "Under Maintenance" sign I left at the door? That faucet can't be used right now. Look at what's happened. What should I do about the water all over the floor...?
Ein and I look at each other as we listen to the loud-voiced man next to us shout while walking. We're both thinking the same thing at this time.
This must be a bout of bad luck.
This must be a bout of bad luck.
More than an hour passes before we manage to borrow a towel from that man and Ein manages to mostly dry his fur. Wearing his semi-dry clothes, Ein insists on taking me to the dessert shop even though I tell him we don't need to go, and it's obvious that he is talking less than he did before.
Oh, we're here.
The somewhat weathered signboard of the dessert shop appears in front of us after Ein finally says something after being silent for a long time.
The only flaw is that... the selection is very limited because we've come too late. After noticing that several other customers who arrived too late like us are staring intently at the last few pieces of dessert, Ein rushes over like a small whirlwind and puts them on a plate for me.
I'm sorry. I didn't think we would encounter so many problems along the way. These are the only ones that are left.
It's alright. Neither of us wanted those accidents to happen.
With Ein's help, I quickly pay for everything, then we leave the shop with the cakes the clerk has packed for us. Although we didn't buy much, the packaging is very complex to protect them from being damaged while being transported, so we ended up with four or five large boxes for just a few slices of cake.
It looks like I'll need to see things through to the end and take you...
*Ringing* Ein's mobile phone starts ringing suddenly.
Oh no! I forgot that I've got another part-time job to go to soon.
It's okay. Just go do what you need to do. I'll be fine with these things.
But...
Because I don't want Ein to be late for his part-time job, I show off my arm strength by lifting all the boxes in front of him. Ein looks anxiously at the time on his phone with some hesitation on his face. Seeing this, I decide to use my secret weapon.
If you don't go now, you'll need to start worrying about your dinner.
Ein is stunned for a moment like he has been hit on the head by a stick, then he says goodbye to me listlessly and leaves. That was dangerous! I almost had to pay for his dinner too. I wonder when I started to feed more and more people here in One Han City, which isn't good at all.
After Ein disappears from my sight, I put down the boxes in my hand because they are inconvenient to carry even though they aren't heavy. Suddenly, my phone vibrates as I receive a message from Ein.
(Text Message) After thinking about it, I decided to ask Zechs to help you take the desserts to the Mahjong Soul Shrine. You just need to wait where you are for a few minutes.
(Text Message) He might be a little reckless, but he's still reliable.
My smile starts to disappear from my face when I see the name clearly. When we meet later, I hope Zechs won't start the conversation by saying... "What? You can't even carry something like this? How weak can you be? Why don't I give you some special training?"
I don't want to do any special training in a forest!

You're incredible, {var:player_nickname}! You even managed to make a comeback in this situation.
Haha, I just got lucky.
After putting the scoring sticks away, I rise from fourth place to first place and become the ultimate winner of this game. I nod at the other two players in the game and stand up contently to stretch my body after sitting at the mahjong table all afternoon.
Damn, if I kept that Red in the tenth turn, then I would've been able to win two turns before you.
Are you still reviewing the log of the previous game? You can't always be so serious. You've got to learn to relax too, so get some rest now and start working hard again tomorrow.
Sigh... I guess you're right.
Ein stands up obediently and prepares to go outside with me for some fresh air, but he keeps talking about the game, and even his tail, which is usually raised high in the air, is hanging low behind him. It's obvious to anyone that he's unhappy about what happened.
Hmm, Ein is still as persistent as ever when it comes to mahjong-related things... I should try to comfort him first.
With this thought in mind, I quicken my pace to catch up to Ein so I can rub his furry tail and deliver my carefully considered message in a gentle tone to try to cheer him up.
Ein, you've had quite a high winning percentage today, so you've done great... Huh? What's this...?
My hand on his tail freezes suddenly after feeling something unfamiliar. I open my palm in disbelief and pick up a strand of messy orange-red animal fur.
{var:player_nickname}, why did you stop suddenly? Did you forget something?
I was trying to cheer you up, but now it seems that it has backfired... I feel a little complicated now.
Huh?
I sigh deeply in my heart as I look at Ein, who still hasn't reacted to my words, and motion for him to look back at his tail while showing him the fox fur in my hand in front of him.
Where's the fur at the tip of my tail? Ahhhh! Th-The thing in your hand! Could it be?!
Yes, you're right. It's fur that you've just shed.
Although this might sound a little offensive... I feel like I need to give you a reminder since we're such good mahjong buddies. Ein, you may have a serious fur loss problem based on the amount of fur you lost when I touched your tail gently.
Immediately after I finish speaking, Ein's big, furry tail disappears quickly behind him. Avoiding my eyes, Ein stands up straight and spreads his arms to try to cover the bald tip of his tail with his body.
You've got it wrong. Th-This is quite natural. Foxes have a molting period every year, and even the warriors of my tribe are no exception.
Although you sound very sincere, I still suspect that you're hiding something from me.
Did Zechs say something to you? Ahem, well...
This has nothing to do with Zechs. It's mainly because I played with a little fox at Countless Springs for a long time when I was there a few days ago, and it didn't look like it was molting at all.
If foxes do molt around this time of the year, then you should both be molting around the same time since you're both foxes, right?
Well... umm... er... a-actually, every fox has their own difficulties, so...
Judging from how you're stuttering, did I guess right?
...
With his amber-colored fox eyes, Ein looks at the sky, the ground, the mahjong table next to him, Ichihime who is busy with something, Wanjirou who is chatting, the scenery outside the door, and the noisy children. However, he doesn't look at me. Guilt is written all over his face.
(whisper) Eliisa told me that even Shaun hides and doesn't want to be seen by others after losing its wool, let alone Ein. Oh well, maybe he has a reason for hiding it from me. I better not force him.
Ein, listen to me...
{var:player_nickname}, actually, this is what happened.
After a short silence, Ein and I speak at the same time. We share a glance and a smile after realizing we were thinking the same thing, which sweeps away the awkward atmosphere. Ein then graciously acts like a gentleman.
You go first.
I just want to tell you that fur shedding isn't such a serious problem, so you don't need to hide anything, Ein. There's nothing to be afraid of. I'll help you find a solution to help you recover.
Are you saying that you'll keep me company the whole time?
Yes, because like you said, we're best friends.
I understand. {var:player_nickname}, you want to share my joys and sorrows.
It's said the mood of an animal is reflected by the actions of its tail, and Ein seems to be proving the veracity of this statement right now as his tail, which he has been deliberately hiding behind his back, is now standing straight and trembling slightly. It's obvious that he's in a very good mood right now.
But I still have some lingering concerns when I recall what happened the last time I shared his joys and sorrows... especially when I look subconsciously at a bare patch of flesh-colored skin at the tip of his tail, which forms a strong contrast with the orange-red fur all around it.
I don't want him to become bald!!!
Ein, the bald patch on your tail is so obvious that any member of the Furry Conservation Association would go crazy if they saw it. Hmm, if we go to the hospital, it would be bad if someone who knows you sees you there, but how else can we treat your fur shedding problem, Ein...?
It's not actually that urgent. New fur will grow on my tail after a while.
New fur... I know what we can do!
Er... Welcome to Wellness & Happiness Pharmacy. How can I help you?
If you see two customers wearing hats, sunglasses, and large black coats enter the store during the evening shift, most people would wonder if they should call the police, but this clerk is still serving us with a smile. That's some serious professionalism.
The authorities will come after us soon if you keep mumbling and acting suspiciously. I'm only doing this to protect your privacy. After all, Mr. Fox, you don't want anyone to know that you've come to buy hair growth serum, right?!
Is that a threat? It is, right? Where has my naive, cute, kind, brave, intelligent, and warm-hearted {var:player_nickname} gone?!
If you keep dawdling like this, you'll soon know that I can follow up my threats with violence.
Encouraged by my "kind" smile, Ein finally reluctantly asks the clerk about the item we've come to buy.
I... We want to buy a bottle of... hair growth serum. Is there any product you would recommend?
You've come at just the right time. We've just stocked a new anti-hair loss serum. Buy two bottles and you'll get one more bottle for free. It's also 20% off right now.
I don't need it, but...
I saw the promotional poster in the window. What's special about this hair growth serum?
Please give me a few minutes to introduce this product to you. This serum is formulated with ginseng and oriental arborvitae, which effectively controls oil secretion and reduces dandruff. The company holds a special patent, and many influencers have recommended it on CatChat.
I see. So this is basically a trending product promoted by Internet celebrities.
Please don't let yourself be biased because of this. When a product becomes popular on the Internet, it's usually because it has features that people really like. You don't need to worry about this at all.
What's more, you can get a free trial pack if you buy it today, but it's only available on a first-come, first-served basis while stock lasts.
Now I understand why sales-related part-time jobs usually have higher pay. It's because very few people can resist buying something if they are guided bit by bit and lured with offers.
Haha, you're really good at making jokes. I'm just recommending a product to you. But since you said that, have you already decided to buy it?
I... We need to think about it. We'll let you know if we need more help.
Sure thing. Please take your time.
After the clerk walks off, I move closer to Ein and ask him a question in a low voice.
Ein, is there something you don't like about it?
No, no, no. I just have some doubts and want to know more about this product. The feelings of uneasiness I've had since entering this store have also been validated.
Huh?
After waving his finger at me to signal me to come closer, Ein puts his phone in front of my face and motions for me to read something together with him.
{var:player_nickname}, this is some information I found online about this hair growth serum. Can you see anything strange about it?
Let me see. There seems to be nothing wrong with its composition, factory of production, official certification, or patent certificate... What is strange about it...?
Look over here! This company develops a hair growth serum, but the top of their chairman's head is bald! This doesn't make sense at all!
Ein points at the photo as he speaks indignantly and gestures excitedly with his hands. His eyes are also full of distrust.
This really is strange. Is it possible that the chairman hasn't used his own company's product?
You agree with me, right? I have good reason to suspect that this hair growth serum isn't as effective as advertised, so we have absolutely no reason to buy it.
Ads usually exaggerate the effects of products, but that doesn't mean the products won't work at all.
B-But I don't need this type of thing at all!
Look at your balding tail. You've lost so much fur that it'll go completely bald sooner or later if you don't do anything about it.
But...
Seeing that Ein has started hesitating, I decide to give him an extra push.
I've come here to buy a hair growth serum with you during the precious time that I usually spend playing mahjong. You won't let my good intentions go to waste, right?
N-No way. I won't do anything to make you sad. It's just a hair growth serum. I'll buy it now.
As if he is afraid that I'll misunderstand him, Ein straightens his back and pats his chest. The determined look in his eyes even makes me think that he is about to participate in the finals of a mahjong competition at the Mahjong Soul Shrine.
Wonderful! That'll be 12,000 Coppers. Will you pay by card or by cash?
The clerk appears suddenly and smiles brightly while handing over an already-packaged hair growth serum gift box to Ein.
12,000!!! I-I'll pay by cash, thanks. Sigh, I'm paying such a heavy price so that you get to stroke my furry tail again, {var:player_nickname}.
In that case, I'll need to check up on you more closely after this. Remember to follow the instructions closely and use it at the right time every day. Start using it after you get home tonight. I'll check up on you.
Ignoring Ein's distressed look, I lead him away forcefully without giving him any chance to regret anything. It isn't until after we part ways that I remember he was also about to tell me something when we were at the shrine.
Hmm... it shouldn't be that important, right? I'll ask him the next time I see him.
I was thinking of checking up on Ein every day, but I was caught up in other things, and a week had passed before things slowed down again.
I wonder how Ein is doing. He should be at his part-time job right now, so maybe I should wait a little longer before...
{var:player_nickname}, what a coincidence, haha.
Oh, speak of the "fox," here he is. A familiar figure appears in front of me as hearty laughter rings in my ears.
It must be my lucky day to run into you right after I left work today. Do you want to play mahjong together at the shrine? I won't lose to you today.
Before that, let me take a look at your tail.
Huh?
Ein, who was just so happy that his head was shaking around, suddenly seemed to be paralyzed. He opens his mouth to say something, but only a few incomprehensible sounds come out.
Wait! Wait! People will think we're doing something strange if you get too close to me.
This is the most secluded part of the whole street, and very few people pass by here. It won't take very long to check up on your tail anyway. You just need to cooperate with me and turn around.
Don't be shy. It'll be over soon.
To make sure Ein won't be able to run away, I forcefully trap him between myself and the wall, then grab his tail and examine it carefully.
The bald part at the tip of your tail looks almost the same as last week. Ein, have you really been using the hair growth serum every day?
Umm, I... I guess so. I followed the instructions and applied a cold compress after using the essence.
Hmm? I remember the instructions clearly state that you should apply a hot compress for half an hour before using the essence.
!!!
Ein, you're usually so meticulous when it comes to other people's affairs, so why are you so careless about your own affairs?
As I already know that Ein is reluctant to use the hair growth serum, a seed of doubt quickly takes root in my heart when I see how ambiguous he is acting while trying to explain things and think about the mistake he made and his tail, which hasn't improved at all.
Ein, did you really use the hair growth serum to treat your fur shedding problem?
Upon hearing my words, Ein's face turns as red as a beetroot, and he pulls his tail out of my hands with a little force. I don't know if it's because he is angry or embarrassed, but the color of his body gradually becomes the same color as his orange-red hair.
Ein's tribe hunts for a living, and having a strong body is an essential requirement of a warrior. Now that I think about it, Ein has been influenced by his tribe since a young age, so there's no way he'll neglect his health.
Maybe Ein is telling the truth when he says that every fox has their own difficulties... It's not right to rashly doubt another person based on a few trivial things.
Hmm... I should think of a way to help Ein with his fur shedding problem first, and then play mahjong with him to make up for it.
After deciding how I'll be using my time in my head, I look up and into his eyes again.
I, actually...
I'm sorry, Ein. I shouldn't have doubted you. I'm only so anxious because I'm worried about your health.
Actually, I'm really healthy. I'm telling the truth!
As Ichihime's owner, a friend to Wanjirou, Zechs, Hannah, and Emma, a regular of Soul and Countless Springs, and a friendly playmate to Mojito the black panther and Snowy Dumpling the snow fox, I'm well aware that a healthy animal shouldn't shed their fur like this. Ein, please don't hide your condition from me because you don't want me to worry about you.
Okay, then you should also forget about the hair growth serum. Either way, I'll definitely recover soon with you by my side.
I feel relieved to see how positive you are about this. I'll also accompany you every step of the way when you see a doctor.
...See a doctor?
Since your fur shedding problem hasn't improved at all after so long, it looks like that hair growth serum might not be that suitable for you. I'm free this afternoon, so I can take you to see a doctor. I'll feel more relieved after that.
Seeing that Ein is about to say something else, I quickly make an announcement that ends this one-sided argument.
It's decided then. Let's go now!
A hospital is a solemn place where people will subconsciously lower their voices after stepping through its doors, and even the naughtiest child doesn't dare to cause trouble in front of a doctor.
I take Ein with me to the dermatology department and sit on the bench outside it. Compared with the patients beside me who are waiting quietly for their number to be called, the fox who is constantly whispering in my ear and fidgeting seems a little out of place.
The registration fee for a consultation with the dermatologist costs 2,000 Coppers! Sigh... This hurts so badly...
If you need any Coppers, I can...
It's not about the Coppers. I just think this expense isn't necessary.
Haven't we already discussed this many times on the way here? It's not good to hide your illness because you're afraid of the treatment.
But physical health isn't the only reason for shedding fur. It can also be caused by excessive work stress, finishing in fourth place too often in mahjong games, or staying up late. In these situations, a doctor won't really be able to help.
If the bald patch on your tail is caused by those reasons, your condition should have improved by a little since last time. After all, it's been a week since we discovered your problem, and you would definitely have improved your work and rest habits after becoming aware of what's happened.
About this, {var:player_nickname}, you should take full responsibility.
What does this have to do with me?
You promised that you would keep me company until I recovered, but you didn't come to see me after that day, so I was constantly worried about whether you'd had any accidents. So... this is definitely an aftereffect of worrying too much about you!
...There are so many elements that I don't even know where to start. Although your tone and expression are quite sincere, your wagging tail has given you away. It sounds like an excuse to not see the doctor!
Well, it's not entirely an excuse.
Embarrassed for having his thoughts exposed, Ein scratches his head and finally calms down for a while. The only sounds I can hear in the corridor now are a mechanical female voice calling out numbers from the help desk of the department and a few occasional soft replies.
Hmm...
Next to me, Ein becomes increasingly and evidently anxious as patients enter the consultation room one by one. He taps the armrest of his seat subconsciously with his index finger, and his toes started pointing towards the exit when I wasn't paying attention.
Everything I can see indicates that Ein really wants to escape from here.
Reflecting on Ein's recent behavior, I realize that he's been acting out of character, both at the pharmacy and the hospital... After thinking about it several times, I gradually come up with a possible explanation.
Ein, are you... afraid of taking medicine?
Everyone is naturally apprehensive about taking medicine, and some people's reactions are especially obvious. They will keep worrying about when they will need to take medicine, and their emotions will overwhelm them, making them subconsciously want to escape the hospital. This is true even for a strong young man like Ein.
When I see the look of surprise in Ein's eyes after I say this, I'm instantly sure that I'm right.
Me? Afraid of taking medicine?
You are very reluctant to use a medicinal product like a hair growth serum or see a doctor even though you aren't very stubborn by nature. After thinking about it, the only possible explanation is that you have a fear of hospitals.
...
It seems that I might have hit the nail on the head. Ein lowers his head and doesn't say anything. I feel a little bad seeing him huddled quietly on the chair when he is usually so lively and cheerful, but I still insist on taking him to see a doctor, so I try to comfort him by patting his shoulder.
Ahhh! You gave me a fright when you raised your head like that!
{var:player_nickname}, listen to me. There's something I've been wanting to tell you.
Ding-dong! The mechanical female voice at the help desk speaks suddenly, interrupting Ein's words. One hour and thirty-seven minutes after registering at the hospital, it's finally our turn.
Number 113, Ein, please go to dermatology specialist consultation room 3 now.
It's your turn, Ein. Let's go and see the doctor first, then I'll listen carefully to what you want to tell me.
The dermatologist who is seeing Ein is a male doctor in his fifties, and his expressionless face makes him look imposing. The nameplate with the words "Chief Doctor" on it makes him look even more authoritative and reliable.
The most important thing is that he has a head of thick, black hair.
When did you notice that you were shedding fur?
About a week ago... some fur had shed from my tail...
Did you experience any strange sensations, such as itchiness or pain, at the site of fur loss before it happened? In the last few months before shedding fur, did you take any medicines or health products, such as vitamins or calcium tablets?
No, everything has been normal, and I eat a mixture of meat and vegetables in all three meals of the day. Everything is regular.
Have you experienced symptoms of insomnia, dizziness, or tinnitus recently? Do you have any problems, such as back pain, cold hands or feet, or fatigue when getting up in the morning, in daily life?
Not at all. I'm very healthy.
Please don't take offense at this, but have any elders in your family experienced similar frequent fur loss?
...Heaven forbid, please don't let my parents hear that.
Time passes quickly while the doctor asks questions, and the doctor's expression gradually becomes serious. The handwriting on the medical record is nearly indecipherable, but the number of lines written gives me a rough idea of the situation.
It looks like Ein's condition is quite serious...
Now that we've basically ruled out the conditions that may cause your fur loss, I'll need to examine the site of fur loss. Please enter the examination room inside, lie down on the bed, and expose your tail.
Th-That doesn't seem necessary.
Ein, who is already somewhat reluctant, refuses instantly with little hesitation, which makes the doctor look unhappily at him like I expected. Seeing the stalemate between them in the examination room, I resign myself to my fate and try to smooth things over between them.
Ein, I know it's a little embarrassing, but the doctor needs to thoroughly understand your problem to give you the most appropriate treatment plan, so an examination is necessary.
A fox's tail isn't meant to be touched so casually by others.
Huh? Who keeps asking me if I want to touch his tail and telling me that it feels very nice to touch his tail?
You're different from the others!
*coughs*...
Probably because he noticed that we've gone off-topic, the doctor breaks his silence and interrupts our conversation with a cough. He stands slowly and puts on medical gloves, then he gives me a command in an irrefutable tone.
Follow me inside and pin him down on the hospital bed so I can examine him carefully.
...O-Okay.
Although Ein is an excellent hunter, he is no match for the two of us. Before long, due to our combined efforts, Ein is lying on a bed inside the consultation room obediently for the examination.
Can you really breathe with your face buried completely in the pillow?
To think a hunter like me would be pinned down like prey. Everyone in my tribe would make fun of me if they knew about this.
Don't forget that a consultation room is a doctor's hunting grounds. You taught me that an excellent hunter never misses, so there's nothing to be ashamed of if you're defeated in someone else's territory.
But my tail has been touched. I'm going to need to clean myself three times tonight! Three times!
He battles to raise his slender fingers in front of me and draws the number three. As if to emphasize his message, he deliberately waves his hand to the left and the right a few times, which makes his body sway slightly.
In the next second, the doctor says something in his emotionless tone.
Tsk, don't let go. Hold him tight.
...Yes!
Doctor, the truth is that my friend has a fear of hospitals, and he may be extremely anxious if he needs to lie down on a hospital bed.
Well... I can understand that. Many patients who come to the hospital feel anxious here, but I can't come up with an appropriate and targeted treatment plan unless I examine him.
Maybe you can try doing it another way. Ein has only lost fur on his tail, so can he sit on a chair while you examine him?
Okay, I guess that's what we'll have to do.
Wait, aren't either of you going to ask me about what I think?
Huh? Were you going to say no?
Of course... I wasn't. Anyway... please promise me that you won't get angry later, okay?
Doctor, how is Ein doing? Have you figured out what's causing the shedding?
After seeing that the doctor has let go of Ein's tail, I ignore the blushing fox next to me and quickly approach the doctor to ask about his situation.
Yes, and the reason is quite clear too. The fur at the site of the most serious shedding should have been shaved off by a razor.
...Huh?!
Look over here. The edges of the remaining fur here are very neat, so it's obvious that the fur didn't fall out naturally. If you look carefully, you can even see red paint hidden under the long fur beside it.
I surmise that the fur at this so-called afflicted area should have been shaved off by its owner after it was stained with red paint that couldn't be washed off.
But I clearly remember that Ein's tail was perfectly fine when I met him that day. The small patch of fur only came out when I touched his tail.
I don't know about that. Maybe you can ask him yourself.
We both look at Ein, who is sitting in front of the table after the examination. His hands are covering his face, and he is trying to avoid making eye contact with me.
Ein, what's going on here?!
I guess I can't deny it any longer... Well, I've actually wanted to tell you this from the very beginning, but I kept getting interrupted every time I tried to explain.
When I was at my part-time job a few days ago, I accidentally knocked over a bucket of paint next to me. Paint is really hard to clean, and the affected area was small, so I shaved the fur that was covered in paint in desperation.
So the fur that fell out after I touched your tail was...
Ahem, after shaving the fur at the tip of my tail, I realized that my bare tail looked a little... unsightly. After thinking about it, I borrowed some glue from an old lady who lived next to me and glued the fur back onto my tail. Nobody would notice it unless they looked carefully, but then you suddenly touched it...
Oh, so now it's my fault?
No, no, no, of course everything is my fault. I felt too embarrassed to tell you that I had shaved my fur and then glued it back onto my tail, so I didn't know what to say to you.
I finally worked up the courage to tell you everything honestly, but then you said you would keep me company until I recovered. I... I thought we would be able to spend more time together because of this, so I selfishly...
So that's the truth behind your fur loss.
I'm sorry for making you worry about me for so long.
Ein's voice becomes quieter and quieter until it disappears completely. He is a strong fox, but he looks at me timidly and expectantly with eyes that make him seem as innocent as a little white rabbit.
Sigh, life is like a play, and we've met because of fate. I won't get mad at anyone, because who will take my place if I get sick...
{var:player_nickname}, what are you reciting?
The "don't be angry" chant. I need to calm myself down or else there will be news about a blood-stained consultation room in the evening news.
...
Most likely because he knows he is in the wrong, Ein, who is just about to step forward, quickly retracts his steps and sits on the chair again where he makes a look that says "punish me however you want."
Even though I know he is just pretending, I find it difficult to ignore the look he is giving me. I take a deep breath and gradually calm down. In the end, I can't help smiling at Ein who keeps observing my expression carefully from the corner of his eye.
This is good news. At least we know that you're healthy and have no fur shedding problems.
I'm sorry to interrupt you, but this fur shedding consultation isn't over yet.
Huh? Didn't you already find out what had really happened?
To be precise, that's just what you think is the truth. The fact is, upon examining you, I noticed that you do shed hair frequently. For example...
The doctor motions for Ein to turn around, then reaches out and strokes his tail from one end to the other. As his arm moves, strands of fox fur, both long and short, fly into the air, covering the nearby table and chairs in a layer of orange-red fur.
Not wanting to believe what he just saw, Ein reaches out and gently rubs his tail. However, no matter how many times he does this, he finds fur on his hand, which means that he does have a fur shedding problem.
This is impossible! I really do have a fur shedding problem?
Haha, you don't need to worry about it. Your situation isn't serious, and you'll get better if you take your medication on time.
No way! This is impossible! I'm actually losing fur... I know, this is a dream!
This blow is so heavy that Ein seems to have trouble coming to terms with reality. When I see his fingers reaching for his arm to try to wake himself up with pain, I quickly stop him.
Just face the reality, Ein. You are shedding fur.
But this is really unscientific. I'm obviously very healthy, right?
Haha, sometimes fatigue can also cause fur loss. Perhaps you've been stressing about how to tell your friend the truth these past few days, which has caused the onset of this disease. Here's some medicine. Remember to make the patient take this every day after lunch.
No problem. This time I'll make sure I check up on him closely!
No!!!
Ichihime, did you see where Ein went?
Master, you're early today, nyaa. I, Wanjirou, and that bad rabbit have accepted Mr. Ein's snacks and promised to not tell you that he is hiding in the storeroom on the east side because he wants to wait for you to leave before coming out to play mahjong, nyaa.
Thanks, Ichihime, go and play with Wanjirou and the others. I won't bother you anymore.
I smile as I hand the snacks in my hand to Ichihime, and we exchange a knowing look at the same time. After that, I walk slowly towards where Ein is hiding with a bowl of medicine in my hands.
Ein's fur shedding incident has turned from a mistake into a fact, and he has started to cheer up and face reality after being dispirited for a period of time. However, I don't know whether it is divine punishment, but Ein's medicine is very bitter. Its bitter stench infiltrates every corner of Mahjong Soul Shrine whenever it is boiled.
Sigh, as they say, good medicine is bitter. Why doesn't Ein understand this? I even come here specially every day to make sure he drinks every last drop of his medicine. This is all for his own good.
Pfft... Even I have trouble convincing myself with this excuse, hahahaha. It's his fault for deceiving me for so long before. Making sure he drinks this bitter medicine is just payback for his deception.
With this thought in mind, I stand still in front of the storeroom entrance, pull the door bolt gently, and call out to him in my gentlest voice.
Come on, Ein. It's time to drink your medicine...
Ein, is it possible that you haven't actually shed any fur?
Wh-Why would you suddenly say that?
Aha, judging from your current expression... I take it that I'm right?
Umm, let's talk about this outside.
The breeze is cooler in early autumn than in summer. Although Ein and I are standing in a hidden place, it is still well-ventilated, and the cool breeze carries a few yellowing leaves through the gap between us, setting the stage for the upcoming interrogation scene.
I'll give you one chance. Tell me what you're hiding from me. Confess honestly, and all shall be forgotten, or else a lot of punishment will be coming your way.
Ahem, actually... {var:player_nickname}, you guessed right. I didn't shed any fur.
It wasn't a guess but a reasonable inference because it's completely illogical for you to be so reluctant to try a treatment like a hair growth serum. I thought about it again carefully and realized that the fur around the bald part of your tail had clear and neat edges, so it looked more like the fur had been cut off instead of falling off.
You remember it so clearly after just a few glances. You're as observant as the scouts in my tribe.
A few compliments aren't going to make me forget that a certain fox lied to me.
Well, everything started when I went inside a bookstore that was being renovated for my part-time job a few days ago. When I was carrying books, I accidentally knocked over a bucket of paint next to me with my tail.
It's really difficult to clean red paint, and I shaved off the fur at the tip of my tail in a moment of recklessness.
If that's what happened, I should have noticed that your tail looked different soon after we met on that day.
Ahem, well... my tail looked a little ugly without any fur, so I borrowed some glue from the old lady who lived next to me and glued my shaved fur to my tail to hide the bald patch. The glue probably wasn't very good quality, so when you touched it lightly...
Ein, it's hard to imagine that you would use a method that seems so obviously unreliable.
Haha, now that I think about it, this really is something I really want to forget forever. Fortunately, you're the only one who knows about it, {var:player_nickname}.
Possibly because he is tipped off by something in my expression, Ein stops smiling and leans over cautiously to apologize to me instead.
I thought about telling you the truth, but I was interrupted when I started. You also said you would keep me company until I recovered, so...
...
Don't be angry. I'll play a lot of mahjong with you at the shrine today to make up for all the wasted time. You can also touch my tail whenever you want from now on. How about that?
He waggles his fluffy tail to the left and right in front of me and seems extremely confident that I will accept his offer and forgive him. To my frustration, I realize after thinking about it that I really can't turn him down.
You've got it wrong. It's more like I'm playing mahjong with you. You're the one who is willing to spend all your time in a mahjong dojo. Also, I've always been allowed to touch your tail whenever I want, so this doesn't count as an apology at all!
As I speak, I reach out and rub the tail in front of me from one end to the other end to resolve the resentment in my heart.
Huh? Wait a minute... What's this familiar yet unfamiliar feeling...?
Like last time, I open my palm in disbelief and look at the many clumps of messy orange-red animal fur on it.
Ein, I think you really are shedding fur.
What? That's not possible!
His calm demeanor disappears, and his face turns pale in an instant. He reaches out to rub his tail, sending orange-red fur flying everywhere, covering everything around him in a layer of orange-red fur.
Whoa! It looks like it's quite serious too.
No way! This isn't possible! {var:player_nickname}, what should I do now?!
Well... I'm not sure about that. You also said that every fox has their own difficulties.
Ignoring Ein's plea for help, I turn and leave to go to a mahjong dojo. Behind me, Ein is still lost in shock after realizing he has a fur shedding problem, but he should go to a hospital to ask for help once he comes to terms with his situation.
But I won't go with him this time. After all, those who lie to others should be punished for their actions.

Is this dagger... also a laser tag device?
That's right. It's made out of rubber, and the laser transmitter on the tip makes a sound when it comes into contact with the laser receiver.
At this time, there are lots of people in the spacious lobby of the wargame club. Standing in front of the display cabinet, I marvel at the various weapons inside it and really stand out among all the veteran players walking past me. Fortunately, Ein has been accompanying me the whole time and explaining everything to me.
These laser tag weapons look so realistic. I almost thought I'm in some kind of munitions and weapons exhibition hall.
Haha, that's not surprising since they were made to look like the real thing to give players a realistic gaming experience.
Laser guns, camouflage uniforms, field battle scenarios that are modeled to look real and natural... Now I think I made the right decision when I abandoned my plans to have a lazy weekend to come to this wargame club with you on the outskirts of the city.
What? Did you really come to play?!
Why else... would I come?
(whisper) I thought you came with me because you wanted to...
Hmm? What did you say? I couldn't hear that clearly.
N-Nothing. Oh right, this is a paintball gun. Getting hit by one of these bullets is no laughing matter because it hurts really badly and leaves a bruise. For that reason, the club requires everyone to wear corresponding helmets, protective glasses, and protective clothing if any player wants to use this weapon in a game.
Ein, you seem to know a lot about all the equipment here at the club. Let me guess. Are you a regular?
I don't really count as a regular. I just come here once or twice a month.
In my hometown, my tribe often organizes hunts. All the hunters will rush into the mountains and woodlands to capture wild animals, and the winner will be decided based on the number of prey caught and their size.
Although I can't participate in those hunts now, I can't let my body become lazy, so I've been looking for places to practice hunting after arriving here in One Han City.
But... based on what I know, shouldn't a wargame like this be different from the hunts you mentioned?
Yes, but playing wargames is an effective way to train both my physical ability and combat decision-making skills. It allows me to maintain the same state as when I'm hunting.
I see.
Haha, since we're already here, let me show you what a hunt is like.
I don't really understand. Are you saying that there's no one for us to play against right now? What can we do...
Tsk, I told you ages ago that you shouldn't expect to run into any evenly matched opponents in a game filled with novices. How could you possibly...
{var:player_nickname}? You're here too?
I turn my head to the left and look behind me at where the voices are coming from and find myself looking into a pair of pink pupils. I also see a rather irritable young man standing next to the owner of these eyes.
The disciple of Nishiba-ryu and... Ein? Why are you two together?
Because we get along really well. Isn't that right, {var:player_nickname}?
Ah, y-yes! I guess?
Seeing the menacing look in Zechs's eyes, my affirmative statement ends with an uncertain tone.
Hey, we also get along really well, right?
Oh? Er... yes?
I see... In that case, {var:player_nickname}, who do you get along with better between Zechs and me?
???
...
Getting the feeling that I've been dragged into a terrible war, I look at Hannah next to me for help, only to find that she's twiddling her fingers and looking at the ceiling, the floor, and the people passing by... She's looking at everything except me.
Excuse me, but our next treasure hunt is about to start. If the four of you are together, you have just enough people for a game.
No, we're not together.
Okay.
Tsk, that's what I wanted to say.
Huh?!!!
Then let me introduce the rules to you.
Wait a minute...
Ein and Zechs gather next to the staff excitedly to listen carefully to the explanation, and even Hannah has joined them. Nobody cares about my rejection...
I get it. I'm just deadweight, like a fragile support character who has forgotten to wear the right gear in a MOBA game...
{var:player_nickname}? If you don't listen to the rules carefully, you'll be scurrying around with your tail between your legs when the game starts.
Ein tugs me gently, pulling me into their group, which is listening carefully to the staff's explanation.
Well, it looks like this Attack Damage Carry is still in control, so I'll reluctantly agree to join them.
Are there any new players today? I'm referring to anyone who is here for the first time today.
Me.
Me.
...Same here.
Haha, quite a few of you are new players. In that case, I'll focus on explaining the various equipment to you. This is a laser receiver that players will wear in games. Each player will wear a total of six of these. When it is hit, an alarm will sound to indicate that the player has been injured.
To give new players a better gaming experience, we'll make it so that each receiver won't register any more hits within five seconds of being hit. In other words, you'll get five seconds of invincibility.
However, please note that if the laser receiver on a player's head receives a laser signal from a weapon, that player that has been hit will be eliminated immediately, so remember to protect your head when you're hiding.
I subconsciously touch my head. It looks like headshots are a thing in all games.
In a treasure hunt game, players will be divided into multiple teams and search for the same hidden target. The team that finds the target and takes it back to their camp safely or eliminates all their enemies will win the game. Based on the number of players you have, I recommend that you split into two teams.
Let's team up, {var:player_nickname}!
Right after Hannah speaks, three intense gazes focus on me.
Hey, I'm the best hunter in the tribe. Think carefully!
I'm not even going to bother to ask you whether your claim of being the best has been verified. {var:player_nickname}, don't you think it's better to choose an old partner with whom you've shared your joys and sorrows?
I've had enough of this topic of sharing joys and sorrows!!! I have no idea how I survived that month!!! I wail in my heart and then turn to look at Hannah.
A-Are you gonna choose me...?
Probably because my gaze is too intense when I look at Hannah for help, she shyly taps the floor with her tail gracefully. After a loud bang, dust fills the air, and I see that the floor has cracked.
Haha... I never would have thought that I, the worst fighter here, would be the one who gets to choose my partner.
Ein and I came together in the first place, and he seems to know the games here very well.
I've decided! I'll team up with Ein.
Ein's golden fox eyes curve into a beautiful crescent shape, and his big furry tail sways from side to side behind him, which is what he does subconsciously when he is in a good mood.
Nice!
Hmph, just so you know, I won't go easy on you later. Don't cry too loudly later.
{var:player_nickname}, you better be careful then. A graceful lady doesn't pull any punches on the hunting grounds!
The pre-game trash talk is really scary.
Don't be afraid. We'll definitely win.
We wear the game equipment under the guidance of the staff. Each of us gets a laser gun and a replica dagger, and the computer will automatically determine whether attacks are successful. We are then divided into two teams before entering the field and being led to our respective camps.
After the announcement plays on the radio, we eagerly leave the safe area of our camps and rush to the battle area. The treasure hunt has officially started.
Although I know that I'm still somewhere inside the wargame club... the venue is simply too realistic, and the trees, streams, and bushes look just like the ones you would find in a real wild jungle.
Ein, is this what your hometown looks like?
If you're interested, you're welcome to come home with me anytime. My old man even said that he'll make some time to personally welcome you.
Huh? It sounds like... you've already told your family about me?
Oh, well... it's impossible to not mention the people around me when I talk to my family. You're not an outsider, {var:player_nickname}, so I've told them some things about you.
But you don't need to take it that seriously. My old man isn't anyone amazing anyway. So... will you come with me?
Of course!
That's great! I'm filled with energy now! I feel like I can beat ten Zechs.
Ahem, that's a slight exaggeration. Zechs's muscles aren't just for show. You... can probably beat five Zechs.
Ein and I look at each other and smile. It seems that my plan to go hunting in that land I've been dying to visit is finally going to happen. Of course, I do need to survive today first.
Buzz-- Buzz-- Buzz--
As soon as this thought flashes through my mind, the laser receiver on my right arm suddenly vibrates strongly. The flashing red light indicates that I've just been hit.
Find some cover!
At this moment, the gap between me and a good hunter is clear at a glance. In response to the enemy's sudden attack, Ein immediately takes cover behind a big tree that is so wide that not even the two of us can fully wrap our arms around it. Meanwhile, I'm standing still on the spot and thinking about where I should run to.
{var:player_nickname}, come to me!
Oh, okay.
However, I keep hearing gunshots coming from behind me. After taking two steps towards Ein, I realize that I've also been hit on my left arm, so I squat down low behind a short bush nearby and protect my head.
{var:player_nickname}, judging from the sound of the gunfire, it seems that only one of them has come. I'll lure them away later, and you'll take that opportunity to find a safe place to hide.
That's too dangerous.
I haven't been hit yet, so I have more HP than you. The five seconds of invincibility is more than enough for me to find a new place to hide.
Realizing that Ein's suggestion is our best option at this moment and that time is of the essence, I nod at him.
When Ein rushes out from his cover, he instantly draws the fire of the opponent. The moment the red dot starts flashing on Ein's left shoulder, I quickly rush to where he was earlier and hide behind the tree.
Judging from how much that person wants to finish you off, I'm guessing that it's Zechs.
I pick up the laser gun on my back and search slowly for the enemy through the scope. Sure enough, I see a few strands of brown hair in the gaps between the leaves, but the laser receivers on Zechs's body are well blocked, so I can't find an opening to exploit.
However, to ensure that everything is fair in a treasure hunt, the treasure is usually hidden in a place that is the same distance away from the camps of both sides. In that case, why would Zechs appear around our camp?
Ein, do you think Zechs's strategy is to eliminate us before searching for the treasure?
Hannah still hasn't appeared yet, so it's possible that Zechs is thinking of keeping us occupied here while Hannah searches for the treasure.
They are thinking of sending one person to take us both out. It looks like they are looking down on us.
All alone, deep behind enemy lines, looking down on their opponent... I link these words together...
Ein, this is our chance!
{var:player_nickname}, this is our chance!
It looks like we're thinking of the same thing.
Let's take out Zechs first while he's all alone.
But...
Hmm?
Although this is a little straightforward... Ein, I don't think you can beat Zechs one on one... right?
...
The silence sure is awkward. I shrink back and try to say something to make up for what I said, but to my surprise, Ein starts laughing instead.
Who said I'll be taking him on one on one? You're here with me, right?
Me? I've only beaten Zechs before in mahjong. Does that really mean I'm stronger than him...?
I'm sorry, Ein...
Huh? Why are you apologizing all of a sudden?
If I'm also an outstanding hunter who is good in a fight, then Zechs wouldn't dare to look down on us so much. Moreover, they've already managed to score three hits on us before we've even started to fight properly...
No one knows who will win yet.
But I...
{var:player_nickname}, one's fighting ability isn't everything in a hunt. Having a good understanding of your own abilities and being able to choose a strategy that suits yourself... are the keys to victory.
Hmm?
Taking our current situation as an example, it's true that Zechs and Hannah's team is stronger than our team, but they have chosen to fight separately in an unfamiliar terrain purely because they are both strong fighters. This isn't very rational and might be the crucial element for us to turn the situation around.
But... what can I help you with in this situation?
Don't underestimate yourself, {var:player_nickname}. There's something that only you can do right now.
Although Zechs is an amazing melee fighter, he isn't very familiar with ranged weapons like these firearms. That's obvious based on how many times he has missed.
Once he runs out of ammo, he'll definitely choose to attack us with his favorite melee combat. This will be our chance.
I'll engage him, while you stay here and find a chance to snipe him from a distance.
I suddenly feel like I'm under a lot of pressure. I hope I don't end up missing every shot.
Just as Ein and I finish deciding what tactics to use, the shooting sounds die down in the distance. Ein raises his index finger and signals for me to be silent, then his ears move in the air while he listens to all the sounds around him.
My grip on the laser gun in my hand tightens when I see that Ein has pulled out his replica dagger. I start counting down silently in my heart...
5... 4...
{var:player_nickname}, relax.
3...
I trust you.
2...
So you should trust me too.
1...
We'll definitely win!
Ein rushes out of his cover like a flying arrow, and actively attacks the intruder like a wild beast whose territory has been intruded upon.
Not to be outdone, Zechs rushes forward to engage him. The battle between these great hunters is powerful and wild, and I can only see two blurry figures among the dust and falling leaves around them in the scope. In fact, I can only tell where Ein is by looking at the color of his fur.
However, red and brown just look too similar!!!
Huff... I need to calm down. It would be bad if I hit Ein by mistake.
The signal receiver used for scoring purposes on his wrist is constantly vibrating and flashing with a red light, which means that Ein doesn't have the advantage in the fight with Zechs. I take a few deep breaths and force myself to calm down, then I pick up the laser gun again and put my finger on the trigger in preparation to shoot at any time.
Huh? Ein is looking at... me?
Through the scope, I can see that Ein is looking in my direction and mouthing some words.
He's telling me to... shoot? But Zechs isn't in the best position... I...
"Bang!" My body reacts before my brain, and my finger pulls the trigger the moment I notice that Ein is giving me the signal. The dust stirred up by the two people entangled in the distance makes it impossible for me to judge whether my attack was effective.
Did I hit him? Wow, what a strong vibration. I didn't hit Ein, right?
Member 1 of the blue team has been eliminated.
It worked?
Ein and I are members of the red team, which means Zechs must have been eliminated.
Good job, {var:player_nickname}. Your headshot won us a crucial victory.
I didn't do anything. It's all thanks to your great leadership.
The main reason we won is because you trust me. After all, Zechs wasn't in the center of the scope yet when I signaled for you to shoot, right?
Yes.
Hey, can you two stop flattering each other? I'm still here and I can hear everything you're saying!
Losers should just shut up.
Tsk, you aren't guaranteed to win this game. I'm just here to hold you up over here. Judging from the time, Hannah should have found the treasure and should be on her way back to the camp.
This time I'm going to make you call me your older brother instead!
Ein, we really did waste a lot of time here with Zechs. There's only 20 minutes left until the game ends.
Given how fast Hannah is, since we haven't received any notifications about her finding the treasure, I'm guessing that she's run into some trouble.
Oh? What could possibly trouble a hunter in a forest?
We'll find out once we get there.
We walk all the way to where the treasure is hidden and find that it really has been taken away by Hannah. The footprints on the ground are a mess, and not even Ein can determine Hannah's whereabouts at this time, so we have no choice but to return to the camp and wait for further news.
Time's up. The game is over. This game is a draw.
Didn't Hannah find the treasure? Why is it a draw?
Ein and I return to the place where we waited for the game to start and encounter Hannah, who is covered in vines. According to what everyone else said, Hannah's intuition quickly led her to the hidden treasure, but then she got lost...
(whisper) {var:player_nickname}, you must remember that losing one's sense of direction in a jungle is a major mistake for hunters.
Although Ein speaks very softly, I see Hannah's furry ears twitch a few times before they become limp and start drooping.
Hannah and Zechs leave us after telling us that they want to go home and train. After that, Ein and I are in a good mood on the way home. The exhaust from speeding cars makes Ein sneeze several times and awakens me from my reverie of the immersive experience of that beautiful natural environment I was in earlier.
Sigh, what a shame.
What's a shame? That we didn't win the game?
No. I just really like the environment we were in earlier, as well as that excitement.
That's easy. Do you remember what we were saying when the game just started?
Your hometown?
Yeah! We can set off whenever you're ready.
You can go sunbathing, hunting, or do whatever you want. I'll take you to experience real nature.
I turn to look at Ein and see that he is looking right at me like he is waiting to hear my answer.
I'll put that on my schedule then.
It's a promise.
Okay.
If I want to win, I can't be careless when choosing my teammate, and my teammate's fighting ability is what I need to prioritize.
I've decided! I'll team up with Zechs!
Hah! I like smart people like you.
{var:player_nickname}, are you SURE about this?
Are you threatening my teammate?!
I just want {var:player_nickname} to make the right decision.
Hey, say your answer out loud again so that stinky fox will give up.
{var:player_nickname}?
No one can remain calm when they are being stared at by a fox and a wolf at the same time. I wipe some non-existent sweat off my forehead and stick with my decision.
I-I've decided to team up with Zechs!
Did you hear that? You stinky fox!
Sigh... I must say that you've made a great mistake, {var:player_nickname}. In that case, don't blame me for not showing you any mercy in the game.
...
It seems that it's too late to change my mind now. I... I just hope I won't run into Ein when I'm all alone.
Although Zechs and I agreed that one of us would hold back the opponent's fighting force while the other searches for the treasure alone, walking alone in an unfamiliar jungle really makes me feel insecure.
It would be better to have a companion with me right now, and... Huh? Wait a minute. I have a strange feeling... Is someone following me?
A strange feeling arises in my heart, and I feel like a hot gaze that I can't ignore is watching my every move.
Is it Ein or Hannah? Have they already defeated Zechs so quickly? No, the scoring device hasn't vibrated at all, so they must not have met yet. The thing following me... can't possibly be a GoPro camera installed by the club, right?
I better think of a way to find out whether I'm right.
Some flowers blooming by the side of the path catch my attention, and I realize that they are real flowers after I kneel down to take a look at them. I feel a little sorry when I think about a fox who is allergic to pollen, but... I can't be kind to him if he isn't going to show me any mercy!
The moment I sense someone rushing towards me from behind, I quickly turn around and slap the person's face with the flower I just plucked.
Achoo!
It really is you, Ein!
There's no time for me to wonder about how Ein managed to get past Zechs's line of defense. Only one thing will happen to me if I encounter an experienced hunter all alone in the wild. To stall for time so that my teammate can come and help me, I rush to the jungle on the other side without hesitation to try and avoid Ein's attack.
Arghhhhhhhh! Why is there a trap in this wargame venue?!
Achoo! This trap isn't part of the venue. I prepared it specially for you.
How did you dig such a big hole in such a short period of time?
Heh, I'm a professional at digging traps. Achoo! I even lined the bottom of the hole with a layer of hay so that you wouldn't get hurt when falling. Alas... even though a certain person didn't choose me to be their teammate, I still have to take special care of them.
...
It's not possible for you to climb out of this trap without any help, but I've always been kind and helpful. I'll pull you up if you shout "I'll definitely pick Ein as my teammate in the future" out loud three times. How about it?
As the saying goes, a great person knows when to yield and when to stand firm. There's also another saying: a wise person submits to the circumstances.
I'll definitely pick Ein as my teammate in the future. I'll definitely pick Ein as my teammate in the future. I'll definitely pick Ein as my teammate in the future.
...
You won't go back on your word, right?
Of course not. I'm just surprised by how quickly you agreed. It looks like I still don't understand you well enough.
I also didn't think you would care so much about who I would team up with.
Haha, then we're even. Okay, I'll pull you up now.
Buzz-- The scoring device I'm wearing vibrates powerfully, clearly indicating that I've eliminated Ein. The moment he leans towards me, exposing his head, and extends a friendly hand to me, I stealthily raise my laser gun and aim it at the receiver on his head.
...
There's no such thing as too much deception in war. I'm only doing this for the final victory.
{var:player_nickname}!!!
The cry of an angry fox resounds throughout the jungle. Meanwhile, I quietly put away my gun with no intention of boasting or showing off.
As the saying goes, one can be killed but not humiliated. Only 20 minutes have passed since the game started. To go back on my word now is to question my judgment, which is something I can't agree to given how stubborn I am.
I won't betray my teammate!
Then don't blame me for this.
The sound of footsteps gets louder as they get closer as Ein approaches me outside the trap. I stealthily raise my laser gun and aim it at the receiver on his head.
Buzz-- The scoring device I'm wearing vibrates powerfully, clearly indicating that Ein and I have both been eliminated.
{var:player_nickname}, you've even learned to launch sneak attacks?!
Perhaps I learned it from the people around me.
So it's my fault now?
Look on the bright side of things. Although we weren't on the same team, at least we were both eliminated together.
...You really know what to say to comfort people.
According to the result on the scoring device, {var:player_nickname} and Zechs have won the game. Congratulations!
Although some people on both sides were unfortunate enough to get shot during the game, we managed to win thanks to Zechs's powerful fighting ability and Hannah's extraordinary ability to get lost.
Hey, cheer up. We won the game.
(whisper) But I fell into a trap right after the game started, so I don't feel like I participated. I think it would be better to choose a different partner to work with next time.
Hey, it sounds like you aren't very happy with the tactical arrangements I made today.
Uh-oh, I forgot that Zechs has excellent hearing...
Zechs, listen to my explanation first. I'm very happy to have won the game.
{var:player_nickname}, so you care more about winning than who you team up with.
Ein, when did you get here? Ahem, you should listen to my explanation too. I actually wanted to team up with you too.
Eh?! A-Am I the only one {var:player_nickname} doesn't want to team up with?! I'm so sad...
Hannah, why are you joining in...
Hey, don't change the subject. Are you unhappy with me?
I really wanted to team up with you.
Sigh... {var:player_nickname} is so realistic, so cold, and so heartless.
Something I said unintentionally has caused all three of them to gang up on me, and comforting them one after another makes me so busy that I sigh silently in my heart...
It seems that being too popular can also be a pain sometimes...
Regardless of who I choose between Ein and Zechs, the other person will go berserk on the spot right? For my own safety, it's better to avoid them.
I've decided! I'll team up with Hannah.
The moment I say these words, all three people in front of me look at me in disbelief. Hannah is covering her mouth with her hands and looking at me with a surprised look on her face, but Ein and Zechs beside me don't look that happy.
{var:player_nickname}, would you like to reconsider that?
Ein is smiling like always, but his beautiful golden eyes are narrowed slightly, giving him the appearance of a predator who is looking at his prey.
Compared to Ein, who is able to maintain his image, Zechs is obviously more irritable.
Doesn't that mean I'll need to team up with this stinky fox? No, I don't want to do that.
What a coincidence. That's what I'm thinking too.
Seeing that things are about to get messy, I grab Hannah's hand and rush to the preparation area first.
We wear the game equipment under the guidance of the staff. Each of us gets a laser gun and a replica dagger, and the computer will automatically determine whether attacks are successful. Before entering the field, our two teams are led to our respective camps.
After the announcement plays on the radio, we eagerly leave the safe area of our camps and rush to the battle area. The treasure hunt has officially started.
I've been walking like this with {var:player_nickname} for ten minutes now, but there's still no sign of Ein and Zechs. This feels strange.
Oh no, since they can move faster than us, could they have already gone to find the treasure?
Don't worry! I won't lose to them in a contest of speed.
But I will!
Then I'll carry you. You can relax, {var:player_nickname}. With my strength and speed, I'll easily overtake them even if I'm carrying you.
The red team has been eliminated. The game is over, and the blue team has won.
Hannah, aren't we the blue team?
But we haven't found the treasure yet...
Let's go back and take a look since we've already been declared the winners.
Hannah and I return to the preparation area, where we see Zechs and Ein angry with each other. After hearing the staff's explanation, Hannah and I learn that the reason we won so easily is because they hit the receiving device on each other's head at the same time after the game started.
I'm so scared! It turns out that the bullets can be used to eliminate our own teammates.
Fortunately, our team is peaceful and friendly. I was right about teaming up with Hannah. I feel so safe with her.
It's just a little boring because the game ended before we did anything...
After hearing what she said, I look at the ears of the two people on the other side, which are twitching slightly, and clear my throat before saying something loudly
I haven't had enough fun yet. Why don't we play another game? This time, we'll form different teams.
Really?
I agree.
It's just as I expected. Ahaha... I hope I have enough stamina today to keep up with these three energetic hunters and allow them to have a good time.
Wait, now that I think about it, is it possible that I'm the only prey today...?
